what's the diff?

Looking at picking up a rear diff skid. There are a couple options specifically for the 5th gen, which look fine, but I'm a big fan of Bay Area Metal Fab. Jerry has a great looking skid, but it's spec'd for a Taco with either the 8" trd or 8.4" 3rd.
I've been digging around on a few different forums, and it would appear that the 8" non e-locker 3rd in the 5th gen may be the same housing (but obviously different internals) as the 8.4" (which actually is an 8"?).
can anyone confirm this?

I live pretty close to Jerry and we mocked up one of his skids on my 2010 TE. It was a while ago and I remember there being some differences and some extra hardware that got in the way. I've been meaning to get back up to his shop to mock up some stuff.

We have a 8.2" rear diff which was new for 2010 to solve the anemic 8" problems.I had Bud try one for an 8" when I was over there in 2010 and it didn't fit as the housing was a little different. He took measurements and made one a month later. Couldn't fit any better and easy to put on.

if you do get back over, definitely keep me posted! I know he's supposed to have some 5th gen sliders coming out soon too

More tips....You have to take the diff fill plug off to get it on.There's a hole in the skid to put it back in after you get the skid on. I reused the washer under the plug 4 times already and hasn't leaked one bit,but YMMV.

Also put the skid up from the front side first as it's a tight fit. Used a floor jack to hold it in place while I got all the bolts started first before I did the final tightening

Do you remember what grade bolts your's came with? Mine is Stainless and only has A2-70 bolts which are pretty low on the strength charts.
 
So in the meantime while you're waiting on the mock up, let me thread jack you real quick :cheers:

What do you guys think about stainless vs mild steel for the diff skid material? I was leaning towards a stainless Bud Built diff skid, but am open to suggestions.

Stainless doesn't rust so it doesn't need touching up as often. I paid the premium for not only the BB diff skid but I even had SW custom build their skid plates out of stainless for me.

Finally got back around to Jerry's to start/restart my sliders. I'm going weld on and the KDSS on the driver side is a bit of a challenge but we'll make it work.
