What's Wrong with this Picture

Pop my hood today to start wiring some LED lights and this is what I see. My vehicle was at the dealer about 2,000 miles ago for its first scheduled maintenance.

That's why I started doing my own changes way back when. I've yet to take advantage of the "Toyota Care" on my two 4 month old Toyotas sitting in my garage.

I fully understand not everyone has a place or time to do their own oil changes, but incurring the worry and frustration by taking it in is pretty much offset by the cost and time of doing it myself.

It really sucks to discover something like that. It makes you question everything.

Dude... Fuuuuuuuuuuu. Holy Cthulhu... I'd be livid. Take it back in and raise hell. The fact that it didn't throw any type of engine light or code is amazing too! Not sure that would happen but you would imagine. That's total negligence. I'd get the service report and get the techs name. They need to re-service you vehicle and do whatever is needed to make sure that there is no internal damage to the motor.

I'm not aware that anyone does electronic monitoring of oil fill caps . . .

You mean yours doesn't have a sensor that snaps in when the cap goes back on?

What I'm talking about is the same concept as when you leave your gas door open. Something to let you know "hey, damage is imminent."

OP - at the least I'd request a new oil change, immediately, as well as a free extended warranty upgrade.

The puzzling thing is they did not even change the oil at its 5,000 mile service. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed that it was not there when I first purchased the vehicle. Anyhow, I'm going to swing by tomorrow and see what excuse they come up with.

Consider it a good lesson. I don't drive off the lot after a dealer O/C without checking oil level.

New oil change kid , always in a hurry grabs vehicle pulls dip stick and sets oil fill cap somewhere under hood . Racks up truck , maybe drains oil. Runs to parts dept for filter and they say no oil change @ 5k you idiot. Pretends to do 50 or 100 point check . Misses fill cap , you drive it falls on road.

man... hope they come through and make it right... when i took mine in for the 5k service they said the synthetic oil isn't required to be changed until 10k as well...

Wow. Sorry about your 710 cap. At the least they should put fresh oil in and send the previous out for analysis.

Don Mcgill? Any update?

Yes. Don McGill in Katy. Went by today but the service department was a mad house. I'm almost due for my 10K service so I will probably just point it out then. Engine bay is clean and the oil level is right, so no damage seems to have been done. I also had a mechanic friend look it over and he said all was good. Just more of a letdown than anything.

There really isn't much in the way of monitoring of crank case pressures, I don't know of anyone that really does this to be honest.

The PCV system is mechanical and so it won't notice much of a difference and if the valve is working correctly, as there's no extra air being pulled into the air intake.

Basically its like running the engine with an old "draft tube" if you want to relate it to anything.

You won't get too much oil spray out of these filler necks because of their length and the baffles in the valve covers (the ones with just a cap on the valve cover tend to spray more oil, but it happens. No real harm done other than the obvious gaping hole allowing dust/debris to fall through the filler neck.

All that being said, its still crappy service and the care shouldn't have been returned to you like that. I like to leave my oil caps in the hood latch mechanism when doing a service, that way if I by some reason have forgotten to fill the customer's car with oil or put the cap on; I'll know when I try to close the hood. It works and I've replaced customer's oil caps before because (more times because of bad hood struts than anything,) but I'd rather be on the hook replacing an oil cap than a blown engine.
