Wheel width & offset fitment comparison...

I can't believe it, but I almost have enough cash saved up for some new wheels. Never put aftermarket wheels on any of my vehicles previously, so this is a new experience for me. You can see my current tire, wheel and suspension info in my signature. I am running the stock UCAs. I have been searching and reading all the different tire & wheel threads and pics. I have examined the BS calculation chart and I know what widths & offset/backspace parameters I am looking for to determine what "fits". My question I guess is what combination fits "better"....if any

For example...2 wheels I am interested in:

Black Rhino Imperial is 17x9, -12 OS which equals 4.5" BS
Method MR301 is 17x8.5, 0 OS which is 4.7" BS

Both of these will "fit", but will either one fit "better"? Basically running the stock UCAs has me concerned about rubbing on the body mount with only being able to get a +2 caster or so. If I am understanding the fitment guides right, as long as my BS is within spec and the suspension components are cleared from rubbing, a narrower wheel with similar BS to a wider wheel should in theory be less likely to rub or rub less?

Maybe I am overthinking this and the body mount chop isn't a big deal? Plenty of people on here have done it, so it must not be that big of a deal. Does it just involve taking a hacksaw or sawzaw and cutting the extra long section of the body mount back to the bolt? or is it more scientific than that?

1. The further you move the wheel centerline away from the stock wheel centerline the more likely you are to rub. Think wheel spacers. Now proceed to choose with this knowledge.

2. A stock UCA does not have the adjustment that an aftermarket one does. That said, depending on the tire and wheel combinations you choose, you could STILL have to do a body mount chop, or not...depending on your choices.

3. The only thing I can think of that would be detrimental to doing a body mount chop is safety. Don't fully quote me on this but both [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] and I concur that the body mount extends out to prevent the wheel from being shoved back into the passenger area in a violent crash. Your choice to proceed with this and I hope it helps!

Check with [MENTION=68685]Ducmonsta[/MENTION] as he has pics and documentation on how his shop does the BMC. Better yet, run your truck up there and have him do it!

Thanks 1E...I knew I could count on you!

1. So, basically, the width/OS combination that will cause the set-up to stick out the most will in result have the potential for causing the most rubbing...17x8.5, 0 OS (1" further than stock) will fit "better" than 17x9, -12 OS (1.5" further than stock). I guess I could always just buy the 1.25" spidertrax and get a feeling for what will happen...

2. I realize there is a good chance, if not inevitable that a body mount chop will be necessary without aftermarket UCAs. Just trying to determine which size gives me the best odds. Fender liner mod was no big deal, BMC I can only assume requires a little more skill and finesse.

3. Sounds like a valid explanation
