Looks like what I have read about in overseas markets called the Fortuner.

I imagine it's more to do with cost and competing product lines. It would siphon sales from the Highlander and 4runner, making those lines less profitable. There's also the potential it doesn't meet US safety standards.

Well we will never know the real reason. You eluded to the same conclusion that I drew, competing markets falls under the not sell enough clause.

Toyota seems to design for particular tastes. It is why Aus has the Prado and Asia has the Fortuner. If you check Toyotas global sight you can see all of their past and current designs.

As for US safety standards, that is a possibility, a slim one I think, you never know though. I do know Lotus is/had a hard time getting the Elise in the US market due to safety standards.

Saw a lot of these while I was in Thailand a few months ago. Looked like a nice ride but never got a chance to look at one closely.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are based on the Hilux platform.

Federal fuel standards (CAFE) means that these would need to be highly profitable, because for every one they sell they have to give Elon Musk a couple grand for emissions credits. With all the SUVs they already have stateside it would probably lose money.
