Who Actually Follows 10,000 mile oil change schedule?

My Toyota service mechanic just did my first oil change on my used 2010, bought as a second owner in 10/13. He does not trust the 10k recommendation. He swears by a 5k oil change.

I am going to trust his word. I just wanted to put this out .

Back in October, I had my oil changed at 17K miles and it was my last free Oil change that was available on the truck at the dealer. When they completed the oil change, they stuck a sticker on my windshield saying the next oil change is at 22K miles. So I guessing that the 5K mile oil change has some merit. My moto is unless the Oil is an extended life oil that I am placing in my truck like Mobil 1 or Amsoil, I would stay at the 5K mile interval unless the service department can show me the oil and what the manufacturer of that oil says the life of that oil is. Again, it all depends on your driving conditions. In 2 months I would of had my 2011 4runner for 1 year and I have only put almost 6K miles on it. Bought it when it had 13,701 miles on it. Now I am over 19,000 and only had 1 oil change. I will not take my truck back in for an oil change until April as it would be 6 months since the last oil change.

So I have decided to try one 10k interval and have it tested, I changed at 60k miles and now have 68k and going for 70k miles before changing oil. I will send a sample to Blackstone and see what the report says.

If all is good, this will prove to me that it can be done, if the report comes back marginal then I will continue my 5k intervals.

I chose this time of year (winter in CA) to do this test because there is less dust and the ambient temperatures are not so hot. The 60k miles oil change was in November the 70k should come up in early March.

I use the Toyota brand 0w20 synthetic oil and either Toyota or Purolator filters.

I plan to post the Blackstone 10k oil report when it arrives.

Suddenly it's 10k.

Once you were supposed to change the t-case and diff fluids every 25-30k.

Now that trucks have 60k plus warranties and service plans... you're not supposed to touch them, they're "sealed."

Odd how that is.

Also, I'd like to really know what "severe conditions" are, really.

If anyone has time to search, and memory serves me well, there are already 10k oil analysed for the 5th gen 4runner on this forum (maintenance forum I think) and bobistheoilguy forums. Tests were positive.

Every 5k for me.. i actually want my vehicle to last 300k+ and yes there are those who will say you can go to 20k no problem on synthetic.. but that's just not for me.. i'm also the guy who changes his auto trans fluid in his Avalon every 10-15k because its 17yrs old and the trans is the weak point on those older 1mzfe engines

Hey, Toyota recommends every 10,000 miles, so that's what i'm doing...and if there is any problems they'll have to fix it.

I just checked "Owner's Manual supplement" and there is no mentioning about 10,000miles service interval. It pretty much says that oil should be changed at 5,000 miles / 6 months.

The 2010 manual was revised 1/2010 to reflect the 10k OCI. I have the original manual with the 5k and the current (2010) manual is available on the Toyota website. Here...

Make sure you are looking at the V6 not the I4 motor.

Somewhere either here or BITOG there is a letter informing dealers of the move to the 0w-20 synth and 10k OCI.

I've posted many times that I'm not happy with the way Toyota handled the change in OCI, however, I have posted an 8k UOA that was quite positive.

FYI, I bought my 2010 TE back in March 2010 with original owner's Servic manual that specified 5000 miles OCI. A few months later (July?) I received a letter plus a REVISED service manual from Toyota that the research showed that the OCI can now be safely extended to 10000 miles .

While I'm not saying I'm smarter than the Toyota engineers that designed this vehicle, I am saying that I just got out of a new (2011) vehicle that was also designed by engineers that had an engine that consumed an incredible amount of oil, had a miscalibrated oil monitoring system, and a faulty oil level gauge. I am saying that a brand new vehicle running on full synthetic oil, designed by engineers (albeit, GM), with regular oil changes at 7-8K ate itself to pieces in approximately 30 months.

My first oil change was at 5K, my next will probably be at 5K, and then I'll work up to the recommended 10K. So, maybe I'm just a little scorned by automotive engineers right now haha.

For the last 30 years I have been following the Change-Oil-When-It-Needs-It schedule. Meaning that if the oil is looking bad at 2000 miles since the last change, it gets changed. The old 3,000-mile oil change is a conservative approach to maintaining a vehicle that's not necessarily true for modern vehicles. I notice the oil needs changing quicker If I do a lot of towing etc. YMMV.
