Who else wheels this hard in open diffs?

I know what you're saying, but several Ultra4 rigs which are IFS have run it. Just for some perspective.

As [MENTION=144462]Sean K.[/MENTION] said, what you pictured isn't what many would call wheeling "hard", which is why I mentioned Carnage. I've run it and it is truly one of the harder trails out there.

Props to you for getting out there and running what you have!
 
I see you have the Savage rear bumper and swing out. How did it handle the abuse?

Buy me a locker and my diff will stop getting trails shut down. Man that sounds crazy.

And the scales are all compromised in many ways as the advent of competition type wheeling has skewed the scales that were referencing trail difficulty from decades ago.

Thanks Tyler! I waited way to long for lockers. I wheeled for a long time with open diffs. It is helpful because it really teaches you to predict traction. But you learn your limits quickly.
 
I wheel my T4r fairly hard, in Pa., which means mud, moss and slippery rocks. I have open rears, and have found that the biggest advantage with the T4r is the rear suspension flex. The tires stay on the ground, so both are pushing. I had one case the last time I was out where I picked up a rear tire and lost traction, but after re-aligning and applying a bit more momentum I made the line.

I firmly believe that a select-able locker is where its at. Turn it on/off as needed... especially in the front diff. That said, I will probably swap in an auto locker in the rear diff eventually, as it should be able to handle anything I can throw at it.

Gauging the need for a locker based on the traction available in Moab is pretty foolish. There are very few places that you'll have that kind of traction when wheeling.

OP, next time you're at Chinaman's take a walk up Carnage Canyon to see where front and rear lockers are a requirement.

When a tire is lifted in the air its not going to get traction no mater what surface...
 
I can promise you, this trail did NOT look like this 5 years ago, and thats what the tree hugging liberals are looking at, to get the trails closed.... but what do I know :bounce:

You should be mad at Mother Nature. It seems to wash out trails more than open diffs.

Regardless open diffs do contribute to it. On terrain like that no matter how careful you wheel you're going to slip a tire at some point where with a locker it is less likely. And when you slip that tire it loosens up the ground making it easier to wash away. Do that with a few dozen rigs and it just gets worse. That's why the trails get closed is because of the degradation over time from weather open diffs and locked rigs.

I definitely agree with what others have said though that selectable lockers are a good thing to have

Thank you, some people "get it" some dont.... again, thats why Im very selective on just who, I go wheeling with...

Wait, so you don't go wheeling with people with open diffs precisely so you won't have to see their tires potentially dig in the dirt?

Or they hold you up because they can't get over obstacles?
