Why would someone spend time and effort customizing a rig to just turn around and sell it, it only has 9k on it

I totally get that. You are lucky to get any money for your mods, if you leave them on the truck. The listing should be more like, "stock truck with free mods".

It looks like a Scepter which are near impossible to find any more so I too would hang on to it. Otherwise I agree with Jesse. Then again, why not toss it out there for a few weeks to see if anybody bits?

I've been buying and selling all manner of used crap over the years and I just can't get over how people can't just suck it up and accept the value of their stuff.
A modified vehicle is worth the same if not LESS than an unmodified one of similar condition.* Others may not want your mods or may be leery if they have been done in a halfassed manner by a shadetree mechanic. This should also be kept in mind if you buy a vehicle with dealer installed off-road mods, those become worhless over the intrinsic value of the vehicle the second you drive off of the lot.**
*this does not apply to vintage vehicles
**this doesn't include factory approved tuners like AEV that sell turnkey mods

Like my Dad taught me a long time ago... something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.
I've played around with customizing vehicles ever since I was 15 and I have had some reaally done up ones.... probably bought and sold over a dozen cars and trucks of all types in the last 15 years and I will tell you this, there is ***usually*** always someone willing to pay for stuff like that. I sold a 2005 Tacoma with a full custom stereo, Icon suspension front and rear, window tint and TRD wheels for far, far MORE than I had invested in it after driving it for 25k miles.... I bought it pretty cheap, took good care of it, and found a buyer willing to pay. Some people laughed at what I was asking for it but hey, I sold it! I've had the same thing happen with other vehicles too. Call it luck or whatever, but some people really want these modded vehicles and either don't have the time, desire, or knowledge to put it together themselves or whatever.
My thoughts.
Now... me personally... I have so many damn hours in my rig that I don't plan on ever selling it!:fro:

Whenever I see someone's trail rig, no manner how nice, I envision water in the diffs and transmission from water crossings, CV axles and differentials that will grenade in a few months, an engine that has been pushed close to overheating from slow crawling at very high RPMs, control arms that have been bent this way and that and are a good bump away from snapping in half, busted shocks, and creative aftermarket wiring jobs on the lights, air lockers, and CB radio that even Nikolai Tesla couldn't figure out.
I personally see any lifted truck as a liability and would only buy one from someone who looks and talks like they have their shit together and doesn't have a teenage son or daughter (let's not discriminate here).
Literally the list of stuff that I want to inspect suddenly explodes and most sellers (and me, really, at my age) won't let me crawl in and out of the damn thing to see if there are any surprises in the making.
edit: did I mention holes drilled in the body and firewall to route wiring harnesses that have slowly been letting water and therefore rust into the panels? Or worse yet, done without grommets so the wires have been slowly rubbing themselves to one day short spectacularly and devastatingly?

You are like me then, and probably many others who wouldn't buy someone else's project vehicle, but that said, there are still millions out there who aren't like us.
Also, you mentioned "trail vehicle" which is a great point. In my mind there are those trucks like the 2005 Tacoma I mentioned above that was built to the hilt and the truck never ever saw a day of dirt. I didn't own it long enough and had too much going on in life at that point to go play. A keen eye can tell the difference between a truck that has been out playing and one that has seen all of its mileage on the street. For example, you look at my 4Runner and lots of the other guys no the forum who wheel their rigs and you can tell from a mile away that they are used off road - brush scratches, trail scars, gouges in wheels, gouges in tires, etc.
Some people appreciate the work that others put into their vehicles, and often times the project mimics exactly how the buyer would build the vehicle so it all works out.
I was just thinking back to when I sold my Tacoma.... the guy mentioned he didn't mind paying a premium because the truck was so clean and he just didn't have the time to do it on his own! So if you are one of those folks like me who values time over money, then when you think about it, if you buy a clean, well built rig you are saving yourself time/money....
I dunno, hahah. I have never bought a built up vehicle and have only been on the selling end, but just trying to rationalize. :bluejump:
