Who runs Load range E Tires ?

I’m pikcing up used tires. Less then 8k. Cooper Stmaxx 285/75/16 for under $500. But they are E rated. I’m currently on General AT2 D rated 285/75/16. I hear E is way overkill. And the ride is harsh. I do not drive my truck as much as I used to. So it’s not my dd anymore. I’m on icon ccd all around. My ride now isn’t smooth but it’s not rough. I do feel a lot of bumps on the road.

I cannot see my self to pass upon this deal. So I’m curious. Who runs these tires, who runs E rated. For how long. And is this to much on the front drive drain. Such as steering rack? Am I just over thinking/analyzing? I’m already fully armored.

I had 265/75/16 on my 2002 with billies at 2" lift, they were the Wildpeak M/Ts. I really liked the feel of them, not bouncy, or ruff riding, but a more solid feel. I like the idea of a tougher, or stronger tire on a 4 - wheeler even on the pavement, i liked them enough that i took the Grabber At 2s off of my 2017 with 400 miles on them, and put on the 285/70/17 Wildpeak M/Ts. The difference i notice most is braking, not terrible, or really bad, but it does take a little more peddle pressure. I do not notice much on take off from a stop, i mean come on it's a 4 x 4. Just my nickle on it.

I have 275-70-17 E rated dynapro atm, on road they are smooth, icy bumpy roads feel harsh. Don’t notice it being any slower or heavier from a stop, but I do notice l her stopping distance and the 4runner likes to cruise 70, it just creeps up there without noticing. 2002, should still be 4.10

I had E range KO2s. I took them off after like 4k miles because they’re heavy as fck. I ran them at like 30psi for an ok ride, but they are stiff as hell.

If you've got the supporting hardware then I don't think the impact of E rated tires is as significant. I had E rated 265/75/16 Michelin MS2's prior to my current E rated 265/75/16 BFG KO2's and prefer the BFG's overall. Yes they're heavy, but I also have the TBU and SS lines which helps a lot... I just drive easier knowing that they're up to the task for whatever pothole or unseen rock comes my way.

Edit: I should that I've replaced all of the bushings, inner and outer tie rods, steering rack, etc. so that plays a part. If you've got worn out hardware a big heavy tire is going to help you finish it off a bit more quickly.

I would be all over that deal. Buy them! I have run two sets of E rated tires, both KO2 in 265/75/16 & 285/75/16. Both ride fine. And theesotericone is right, proper tire pressure given your load out is important. I left a DT one rotation, to notice a much harsher rise up front where my 5th wheel was rotated in. Come to find out, they pumped that baby up to 50 psi. !!!

I've had my 285/75R16 Cooper S/T Maxx's on since May, and while it sucks taking them on and off of the car, I don't feel them being too harsh or heavy on the road. The suspension might be doing the heavy lifting, but with the tires around 32-35 psi, the ride feels great! I highly recommend those tires as well; they perform great in the mud and dirt.

Late to the ballpark, but my last two sets were. I loved them in knowing I could trust them. Rode a bit hard, but just deflate them and chalk test and road 10x better.

I run BFG Mud Terrian TA in a 235/85/16 about 5 months out of the year. run 38 to 40 psi. I have a 3 inch lift as well. ride is rougher than the standard size Michelin I run the rest of the year. braking is not as good. seems a little down on power with the BFG on. they are taller than the stock size so kinda like putting taller gears in. but the ride is not bad, just rougher than the stock tires. they work great off road. I am not expecting a super smooth cushy ride from a 4x4 anyway. in my opinion 4Runners ride to soft and mushy in stock form. at least the 2 I have owned did. if you think the tires are a good price grab them

I'm not saying they aren't heavy, but I don't notice them being heavy or riding "harsh". For the first 20k miles, I ran my KO2's at 43PSI, and they were nowhere near what I would call harsh. I run them at 36PSI now, but not because I wanted a softer ride- I realized 43PSI is too much pressure for the weight of the runner, and would likely cause uneven wear.
The load range C 315/70R17 KO2 is the same exact weight as the load E, so you can't just go by the load rating when judging the weight of a tire.
I just got 18.24MPG on my last tank. With 315's and 4.10's, I'd say the weight of the tires isn't having much of a negative affect on anything at all.
Would lighter be better? Yeah, I guess. But having the weight down low is nice for COG too *♂️

Just picked them up. $460 for cooper stmaxx. Less then 8k miles. They still have the little nipples on the side walls.

I mean I guess it’s subjective but I thought the 285s I had rode like shit. Running 30psi helped, but I still took them off. The SL rated 265s I replaced them with are significantly better in ride quality. They’re better in acceleration and braking but that’s largely impacted by the OD of the tire too. I’m not saying you shouldn’t run E range tires but if you have a choice between E and C/SL and you put a lot of highway miles on your rig, the C/SL tires are a better choice.

I am running E rated KO'2s about 7 months a year. then switch to studded snows ( live on hills with lots of ice and snow)
I went with the E rated ko'2s because when the snow clears I do lots of forest service and other gravel roads.
To me they don't seem any harsher then what was on before I got e rated tires. could be just me and not really caring

Well E rates it is. Have no choice lol. definitely a overkill. But hearing from you guys. I should be alright. The truck should be good. I don’t daily drive it. It’s basically now a weekend toy. I do take it on long trips. Because I love the luxury I have put into it. But other then that. It sits in the driveway now :(.

Is anyone concerned with fully armored 3rd gen. all the weight? The stress on the drivetrain and engine ? I’m going on a trip to VA in June.

Oh, I agree 100%. Well, I'm not sure why the highway miles thing, but I still agree. If the load C 315/70R17 KO2 had been out when I bought tires, I would have absolutely gotten the C. I wouldn't get a load E for a 4Runner if I had the choice.
...could be just me and not really caring
Exactly. X2.
It's very subjective.
If the tire is stiffer, it probably deflects less when cornering too. For how much I enjoy driving, I may be disappointed if my sidewalls were deflecting more around corners.
