Why are 5th gens so cheap...?

I am contemplating selling my 4th gen, so I have been shopping 5th gens.

I have found about 50 that are under 25k with4x4 and more than a dozen 4x4s that are 20k. I even have a call in for a trail for 22k.

I was talking to a guy on the 120 forums that is considering 18k for a 2010 with 109k miles.

It looks like the price on these are dropping way faster than the 4th gens..am I wrong?

Should I jump on one of these, or wait for them to drop more?

And is the trail with KDSS worth 2-3k more? I do love the gauges.

109k of miles is 8 years worth of driving for the average person. To still get close to 50% of current MRSP seems pretty good to me. This is the 5th year on the road too. A lot of vehicles only retain 50% of value after only 3-4 years and far fewer miles.

If you are planning for major suspension mods, I'd skip the KDSS...the gauge cluster is all the same in the Trail w/ or w/o KDSS,

If it was me, and I was buying used and I had to pay a premium of 2-3k more just for the KDSS, I would probably just get the non-KDSS and put that 2-3k into a nice aftermarket suspension instead.

Not sure if you should jump on it or not, I mean that all depends on how deep are your pockets. Prices are always going to drop over time, can't wait around forever, lol.

Where are you finding them for $25k, and what kind of mileage are you talking about? Anything with around 100k or more miles will have lost significant value.

When I was looking for a 5th gen 8 months ago, I saw 5th Gen SR5s with less then 50k miles listed in the low $30s. I paid $34k for my 2013 SR5 new (MSRP $37k) I would say those I saw back then in the low $30ks held their value pretty well.

For Reference, my wife just bought a 2006 GX470 Sport with 80k miles on it for 21k. Considering it listed for about $55k new, I would say it lost way more value in 80k miles then that 2010 4Runner did in 109k miles

Just wait until Toyota officially announces that they are discontinuing body-on-frame vehicles, including the 4Runner.... THEN our 5th Gens will go the opposite way and increase in value. I wouldn't be surprised to see nice 5th gen T4R's going for upwards of 90k after that announcement. HAHAH

I was thinking the opposite. I paid $23k out the door for a 2008 brand new 4R (mind you the economy was in the dumps) and paid $35k for a brand new 14' trail.

Although when I was looking at used 4th gens, the price of one with 85,000 miles on it was still around $24k for 5 years old.

For Reference, my wife just bought a 2006 GX470 Sport with 80k miles on it for 21k. Considering it listed for about $55k new, I would say it lost way more value in 80k miles then that 2010 4Runner did in 109k miles

probably cause lexus wont CPO one with that many miles, hence the lower value.

and another issue is that the new 2014 are actually cheaper than the 2013 when they came out, the difference was $5k.

i could only imagine the backlash that caused for the 2013 buyers.

In all honesty, I have found the exact opposite. A good friend of mine actually ended up buying a new 5th gen just because he couldn't find a used one cheap enough. The price difference between a new one and a used one was so close that it didn't make sense to buy used. Either way, if the OP is finding used TE's and SR5's for mid 20's, that is amazing and a smoking deal for a helluva vehicle.

I spent a good two months hunting for a 4Runner and while I did find base models for around $25k and a select few with 4x4, as soon as you added 4x4, Navigation, Backup camera, Leather Heated Seats, etc. the price sky rocketed to ~$35k for 2013 used. I search nationwide on Cars.com, AutoTrader, all of Craigslist.org (SearchTempest.com), TrueCars.com, many many dealers, AutoNation, CarGuru.com, eBay.com, Aol.com, Yahoo, here and other locations so I can tell you I have some insight into the national averages for a 4runner.

I picked mine up on Dec 31st at 7pm for under $29k with all of those features and more but only because the dealer HAD to get it off the books by Dec 31 for the 2013 close of year, plus they gave me a great trade value ($8k) on my 2006 Honda Accord with a wreck on record, 110,000+ miles and other minor issues.

As for the TE for $22k, either it's a 2010, been wrecked or simple a SCAM.

Thank you, I was not looking for KDSS but for a clean 1 owner TE with back up camera and other junk and 109k miles. I think I may be okay with it....but I do plan on putting suspension on it.
My pockets are not as deep as my reach.......

I did not get a great deal on my 2013. It just an SR5. But has a few extras like third row heated seats.

But cars.com has a ton on there that are 2010-2011 4x4 models for under 25k and several closer to 20k. (I only search dealers)

The TE I am looking at is at a Toyota dealer. 2010 with 109k Clean vehicle history and good records on mytoyota.com. They have called me back twice since I first called them. now and I have a credit app in with them. But now I'm wondering if I am going to hose myself with the KDSS.

Me too. Ordered on November 8th - and I am supposed to be able to pick it up this coming Tuesday. Long, long, long wait...

make sure it isn't a flood vehicle. No guarantees it will show up on carfax. Had a friend stuck with a vehicle that dealer and carfax showed as clean. However dealers apparently have a couple of other vehicle search engines they can use and one of those showed the car had been totaled and had a branded title.

There are a bunch of 2009 SR5's (all your post shows) that have equal or less millage and cost less. Just do the search and you will see them. The SR5 can be had new for around 5k less than a Trail so keep that in mind when looking at deprecation. If you find a screaming deal on a Trail then I would jump on it, only if it was a good example of a 4Runner. Trails are hard enough to come by as it is. However, the reality is simple: if it's cheap - there is a reason. Most of the time, people won't take less for a vehicle than they think it's worth. I would look very hard at a Trail that costs $22K - you may be getting a $22k anal resizing with Crawl engaged.

I bought mine about a month ago. I live in Tennessee, and traveled to West Virginia to pick it up. I actually was looking for very specific requirements, so I'm happy with the price I got it at.
