Why are 5th gens so cheap...?

I bought mine about a month ago. I live in Tennessee, and traveled to West Virginia to pick it up. I actually was looking for very specific requirements, so I'm happy with the price I got it at.

2011 4Runner Trail
31,000 miles
Leather w/ Heated Seats (aftermarket)
NAV w/ JBL
MINT Condition. There may be one scratch on it.

all for 28,000 out the door. I felt like I got a killer deal, but either way I am exceptionally happy with it.

I kept looking around, and originally I found a limited. It had a ton of miles on it (80 or 90), and they were in trouble with the bank. They were going to sell it to me for 24k I think, but I'm glad I traveled the distance and paid a little more for this one. The small amount of miles means its going to last for years, and because of the condition it's almost like cash in the bank. Plus, I couldn't bring myself to enjoy all that chrome. I really liked the blacked out trim look.

Glad for this thread. Basically I had the same question.

From the quick research I did it seems that $23-28k is the price for average miles on the 2010 model.

I started looking at 2014 SR5 4x4, with third row and had trouble finding it. (especially for a good price.) Found many RWD though.

But my parent's found a 2010 SR5 in their neighborhood, one owner, 4WD, Black leather interior 50k miles and they are asking $26K. I haven't seen any photos yet, but they say it is nice.

Here I am on the forum looking for any issues or problems with 2010 models.

And the used car might give me some room to add some modifications right away! I'm thinking a rack for the top. Removing any running boards… what else...


Any advice on the rack/running boards or the model/price welcomed.

A dealer offered me $27k for my 4Runner trade. The vehicle price was my employee pricing, so I am pretty impressed with the resale. I had 2 other dealer offers of over $25k. (2010 SR5, 4WD, 38k miles, premium package)

Have you used cargurus.com to see comps in your area? When I input TE for my area I only see one2004 $12k with 114k miles. Nothing for 2011.

There is not a lot of TE for sale in rust free states period. I have found three of them under 26k. One was in NJ and was cheap enough for me to avoid (19595) and then a 22k in WA that was a base TE but had 109k. Then I found this one for 25995.

The prices are all over the place, they are cheaper near me in general, but I want one without rust.

What if you got an SR5 4WD with lower miles for the same price?

Maybe I am too new to understand the benefits of a TE, but it seems that if you could get lower miles for the same price that you could extend the life of the 4R and maybe modify the suspension.

But, I can't even look at TE because the third row seat for me is important.


ETA: Sorry, looks like you already have a 5th Gen…. is that so? You've already thought about this option probably.

I did find a 2011 SR5 at a Toyota dealer in FL 4x4' pretty basic but with 52k on the clock for$19,999. Not a bad deal at all, but I wanted the trail to begin with but we had to have 3rd row, now that we have it.......well you know.

I'm going to get a shipping quote first. If it's too high, I will use my points to fly out and drive it back.

Nothing was wrong with the 11. Couple scrapes on the rear bumper, but the big thing for me was it was very basic. No steering wheel controls, no sun roof, no 3rd row or slide out.....it's just bare bones.

It sucks I dumped 15k into my SR5 in mods.....I honestly did not think I would ever get a trail and I never wanted to give up my V8. I may end up keeping my 4th gen...not sure yet, it's for sale, but I'm a thick headed seller.

......I did find base models for around $25k and a select few with 4x4, as soon as you added 4x4, Navigation, Backup camera, Leather Heated Seats, etc. the price sky rocketed to ~$35k for 2013 used.

This is my situation.

I picked mine up on Dec 31st at 7pm for under $29k with all of those features and more but only because the dealer HAD to get it off the books by Dec 31 for the 2013 close of year, plus they gave me a great trade value ($8k) on my 2006 Honda Accord with a wreck on record, 110,000+ miles and other minor issues.

Wish I was with you to pick up a 13 for that price. I went Tuesday night to look at a 13 Salsa Red Pearl with Nav, Leather, Heated seats and they still wont go much below $3,000 off sticker. By the time I add taxes, title and fees, I am back to $39K. They did say if I walked in with a cash offer, I might be able to get it for $4,000 of sticker.

Unfortunately, my trade my 15 year old Honda Accord with 256,000 miles isn't worth anything on trade in.

Still looking for a quality used SR5. I hate I missed [MENTION=48413]Quentin[/MENTION]'s 5th Gen the other day in the For Sale Forum.

I ended up getting $27k tradein which meant my taxes were reduced by $1350 and I got the remainder of my Platinum warranty back ($250 on a 7yr/75k). I would have needed $28,500 private to get the same benefit. Amazed at how these things hold their value.

Part of the reason 4Runners are so cheap is that there are mostly cosmetic changes between the 4th and 5th gen. Toyota has gotten a tremendous amount of mileage from the 4Runner/GX/FJ platform and engine family.

They still hold their value in places like Colorado and the Northwest where people actually use/value them, but resale values have tanked in the South.
