Will 16" SR5 wheels clear brakes on a Limited? / snow tires

My dad just got an 08 4runner limited 4wd. He wants to get a spare set of rims to run snow tires on in the winter.

Will the 16x7.0 rims clear the brakes and fit - bolt pattern is the same it appears? I would assume they should (why would toyota put 2 separate brake sizes on the same car) but just wondering since the front rotors seem pretty large even with his current 18s.

What is everyone else running as far as rim size and tire size for snows?

Sport Editions and Limiteds use a 13.1" (or is it 13.2"?)rotors and the SR5's use 12.6".

The bigger brakes work with 17" or 18" wheels but not 16" wheels. Determine which brakes you have as I'm not sure if all Limiteds use the big brakes. I suspect the window sticker would say...

I dont think the sticker said anything but i'll check later.

It must have the big brakes though cause while the rotors look sort of decent sized there is some sort of thin metal shim like piece (but its not shims obviously since its on therotor) that sticks out past the rotor leaving only maybe 3/4" clearance with the 18" wheel. At least on teh fronts. I've never seen anything like that before.

Would be nice if the 17s cleared it, even though lots of trucks and suvs come with 18s now, just doesnt seem right to me to run snow tires that big.

I'm pretty sure 16's won't work. The 2008 Limited has the larger front rotors. I'm using P265/65/R17 ( stock size tire for Sport ) Michelin Latitude X-Ice for winter on my Limited. The snows are off my 2004 Sport.

Scoobs - how do you deal with the TPMS with your winter wheels? On my jeep all I did was buy sensors from ebay and put them on my winter set of wheels...and once the wheels are mounted the computer will read the signal and all is well.

Does this work the same for the toyota TPMS or does it need to be plugged into the computer and cleared or reprogrammed? The reason I ask is because thats what the service dept said (of course they have been clueless before), I'm just curious if anything like this needs to be done.

GGplastix - are those 06 wheels 18"? Do they have TPMS sensors? As far as the tires, I know my old man wants to stud them but I will keep your offer in mind. Thanks.

Yes they are 18" and have TPMS sensors in them. I bought Chrome rims so i was thinking about keeping these for the winter but if I get a decent offer I'll sell them.

I found out some more info for the TPMS, I guess the ecu can only be programmed to five sensors at a time. So every time the wheels get swapped they have to be programmed into the computer. I have heard it takes 30 min of computer time? On the other hand if I have the 7 or 8 digit string of numbers (s/n?) on the sensors written down they can just put those into the comptuer so it can pick them up quicker and it only takes about 10 mins of computer time...now i dont know if the dealership would ever split their billable hours this much but its worth a shot.

Now we have to figure out how to get these numberes off the stock tires, maybe they can do the normal programming method and write downthe 4 stock TPMS serials and we can keep that for later.

When I put the snows on my 2004 Sport I just had them switch the snows onto the Sport rims with the existing TPMS. Had a total of 6 swaps on and off the rims, 3x2 for the snows and 3x2 for the summer tires. Absolutely no marks on the rims ever, no pressure issues, and it was the local Toyota dealer that did it.
This time I'm going to have to buy 17" rims for the 4Runner but I'm not going to bother with the TPMS. I have a 2009 Matrix ( purchased May 2008 ) that I put 16" steelies with snows on last winter ( OEM size was 17" ) and I didn't put in tpms sensors. After the first week of driving I didn't even notice the TPMS light on any more.
