Lets say the value of the dollar drops drastically down the road and gas prices were at $4, 5 or even $6 per gallon. Different questions may arise such as, will I look to purchase the 5th Gen TR4, will I trade, will I drive less, etc.

+1. No matter how high the gas, I would still need to drive. Always other areas of cutting down ... restaurant meals etc.

If the economy worsens down the road, I don't think you'll see gas prices go up... In fact, I think the general trend would be [bad economy] = [low gas prices] since there would be lower demand for gas (consumers, businesses, etc.).

gas where i live is about 1.229 right now per litre.

that puts it roughly at $4.65 USD per gallon equivalent.

i try to drive carefully and perhaps less frequently if prices keep going up, but i dont think gas prices will stop me from driving completely.

like Ryan, driving is one of my few pleasures and i would gladly sacrafice entertainment money to drive.

Yes, mainly because I don't drive a ton, so I only fill up about every 2 weeks or so. $4/gallon gas isn't as big of a deal to me, and compared to some other expenses, it's only a minor increase.

A Weakening dollar means good economy for US and not worsen, but not good for average consumer like us, if US dollar weaker it means it less expensive for the foreigner to buy US products and it also means the debt is worth less than what it was originally borrowed. So that is kind good but not good because we as consumer have to pay more for everything to buy.

I've got about 100k miles on my '03 4Runner. I need something with offroad capability, so I figure the best thing for me is to run it into the ground, even if gas does go up over $4. If that happens, I'll be driving slower, but I'll still be driving my 4Runner.

I compared the T4R to a hybrid Highlander, and the price increase for the hybrid + battery replacement cost after 3 to 5 years mean that I can drive the gasoline only T4R quite a ways before it stops making economic sense.

Most people forget about the battery replacement cost for hybrids and those ain't cheap.

I would have preferred to have my T4R in diesel, but in this country that ain't likely for a while. Benefits there are mileage, cost per gallon and the ability to make your own (plus no foreign dependency).

If it's economic reasons that drive the cost that high, I will be moving funds onto my home protection fund, because anarchy/rebellion will not be far behind in that case.

If it's because of short supply, it will be slow enough that diesel or hydrogen vehicles will be on the market and I'll switch...

This is no longer true. The Toyota hybrid batteries last well over 100k miles. In fact, for most Prius, the battery has lasted well over 200k miles! In fact, in California, hybrid batteries have a warranty of 10 years, 150k miles.

Replacement costs is under $2000 these days, including labor...and this is with a brand new battery. You can search for a used one for under $1000. And with hybrids, you don't need to replace your brakes until near 100k or beyond...so, you save money on that end. Worst case scenario...you need to spend $2000 every 200,000 miles beyond routing oil changes...not necessarily a bad investment!

I'll still have my T4R. I'll just drive it less. Expensive gas will have a bigger impact on if I choose a sports car as my family's 3rd vehicle or if I choose a Prius/Prius V/CT200h. I'm not going to quit camping, hiking, and biking because of expensive gas. My 4Runner makes all those activities more pleasurable. Plus, if I'm putting 5k miles a year on the T4R, even $5/gal gas would only cost $1000/year. I spend that much on my TV subscription (sadly).
