Willbgood Build Thread

Spent the day chasing parts ordering a new ignition and negotiating prices at Toyota locally. They are going to match Dallas parts for all the suspension parts I need to do the lowers...so discount and no shipping.

Did you mean to post this in the "What did you do to your 3rd gen today" thread, and not the OP's build thread?

BTW Will, you have a great space to work out of. I wish I had something so clean, well lit, and spacious. Some day.

That sucks. I am sorry to hear that the trans flush did not go as planned. I am really close to doing the same thing. Is there anything else that causes pink milkshake besides the transmission fluid mixing with the radiator fluid? Maybe to be on the safe side, replace the radiator. Keep us posted, and I hope your transmission is safe.

I have been thinking about the same thing since yesterday. The fluid was strange. It flowed dirty reddish brown at first and then the milkshake appeared. I am wondering now if I introduced to much air from the new lines, and the fact that I drained off quote a bit in the cooler install.

As well I would think that any number of things internally wrong with the trans could cause a similar reveal to the milkshake.

All I can do at this point is drive it a little and see. I did not want to drop the pan, but I will in a few weeks and inspect everything and then re-flush the system. Its a 100 bucks of fluid, but the diagnostics of viewing the fluid could answer a lot of questions. When I do it this time I will make sure the system is hot, the cooling lines full, and the beer cold, just in case.

There is no telling at this point if it is terminal or not. I will look for a re-buildable trans in the wrecking yards and start that as soon as I can, regardless of the outcome.

In the mean time I am going to get a radiator.

In regards to the radiator, I am thinking that most of what I read about milkshake failures is over 150,000 miles, so I would recommend changing it if you are over that and then at about 125,000 mile interval afterwards, maybe even 100,000 miles. Remember, milkshake failure is not the only damage that occur from a bad radiator.

My first and second gen trucks all went through radiators, but most of them never saw the pavement more than 20% of the time, and lived the hard farm life.

He is welcome here as well, and I think he is referencing my post on negotiating locally for a discount.

I was able to get my Toytec lift and all my parts locally, at a good discount, and I beat all the shipping costs as well.

Checked everything out today again and I think I did not have water in the trans. The radiator is good and the new fluid is fine. The old fluid revealed no water in it.

I think what happened is the air in the lines under pressure foamed up, and caused the fluid coming out to have a milkshake look.

This makes me wonder if the milkshake can have other causes besides water from the radiator. I won't know if my tranny is bad until I get it finished, but I think it is fine.

lost rack of the days

When I started this I thought I would push through and be done in like 30-40 days. Clearly that has not been the case.

Combine with my other duties, (honey do list, and keeping up with my wife's needs, and the insane market), I have not been able to work at every day, and I have not kept current with my updates.

So, I am going to give a quick update and photo's and pretend its day 26...but there have been several 1-2 hours days in between.

I finished the transmission work, installed the cooler and fan and all seems fine, but I will not know for sure until I have run it a few hundred miles. It seem that I blew air in as I started the flush and that cause my milkshake. The was not water in the fluid. I post pics of my DYI flushing system.

I received the bumper and got it off to the powder coater. I wish I had of thought that through and waited until I had the mounted all sorted out first. Now with the powder coated bumper I have to be really careful not to damage it while getting it mounted...I don't no what I was thinking, or perhaps I was not thinking at all in my excitement...likely the latter.

The bumper comes with a little kit for mounting. It requires a little cutting and then a little welding to mount the bolt on plates to the front of the frame. I prefer this over welding on the bumper in case the engine and trans need pulling or you have to do any in which the bumper would either be in the way or have to been leaned over...a half out of that and the torch would be out.

During the grinding I hit the air conditioner line...I did not cut through it, but it will have to be replaced as it will fail in the future. Arghhhh.

I posted pics of the bumper temporarily mounted...

The seats are reupholstered and just need reassembly and re-installation. the interior is cleaned and prepped as well and waiting installation. I need to clean the interior a final time to rinse out the detergent smell which has replaced the nasty smoking as the new nasty...A good wash and rinse with a mild detergent will handle that...

Everything involving the suspension lift and brake lines is complete, but the alignment has to be done and will be handled next week.

As with almost every project I do I have exceeded my budget. I will have to wait for the rear bumper and the sliders until I manage to make accrue some cash. Not a big deal, but frustrating as I want to get the job complete.

I also threw in a picture of my sons dog visiting, family takes precedent, which is part of the reason I fell behind my schedule

Finished the engine and trans work today

The last thing I had to complete was a plug and wire change. When I changed the spark plugs I was stunned to find that the left side plugs were different then the right.

Apparently the last tune up was not completed for whatever reason, I can not fathom.

Notice that the plugs are two different types, also notice the three from the left side are much older and wore out than the right side.

The work on this toy was done by TuneX, and I paid for it. I new my stepson would not care properly for the toy, so I paid to have it maintained. Needless to say I am pissed and going to visit Tunex tomorrow.

The good news is their does not seem to be any serious damage and after the tune up the toy runs great.

Good work on the clean up job, that was really bad!

Its getting there. Still need to reinstall the interior. The toy smell like a French whore house from all the cleaning solution. I am going to give it one more wash with citrus, and they rinse it real well and let it air out a day or two in front of the shop...hopefully the cleaner smell will dissipate, but it is surely better then it smelled when I started and ode de French whore house is not to bad...

Thanks, the bumper is by Josh Whitson.

Just an FYI, you're replying to a spambot, not an actual person.

Also, the 5VZ-FE's all came with NGK spark plugs in one cylinder head, and Denso spark plugs in the other. There has been a lot of speculation as to why Toyota did this.

At any rate you can run all NGK, or all Denso, or all whatever your choice of spark plug is, if you want.

1. Thanks for the heads up on the spam bot...what's a spam bot?

2. Now I am even more pissed because I am thinking the plugs were never changed....argh...

Thanks for the info, I won't shoot the messenger...:)

Happy New Years

It has been a minute since I last updated, so I will now.

The toy is mechanically aligned and being aligned today.

Got in on the Baja Group buy 2.0 and I am ordering sliders, skids and a rear bumper from Savage, and a Smitty built winch is on the way...

The interior is completely cleaned and the seats are done.

Should be on the road in a week or two.

Wishing everyone a safe new years eve, and a successful, profitable, and joyous new years.

Its all its all starting to come back together

Today I reinstalled the interior. I think it look pretty good. Proper cleaning, and new seat upholstery makes a big different. I kept the original carpet since this will be a ski and desert rig and any carpet I get will get dirty and stained pretty fast. The carpet was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized and smells good, but it clearly is stained. I hid the stains will new floor mats.

The vehicle is aligned and it is running great so far. Still need to get the front bumper mounting brackets welded on and I am waiting for my roof rack, sliders, and rear bumper from savage.

Here are some photos.

Hey Will - a lot of this work looks familiar. I like seeing a neglected truck get some attention. These trucks will last a really long time with proper care. Chuckles truck is nothing like it was when we got it.

Seats look awesome. Where did you get them again? I don't feel like searching.

Very unlikely, but audiness

There is a ZERO percent change that's a spam bot. Spam bots don't go undetected since 2010, rack up close to 850 posts, or post 3rd Gen items for sale in the classified section. Spam bots might be able to get up to 5 posts before an admin catches them.

That bumper does look pretty though.

I have to go back and find the receipt, so I can give you his direct number, I found them on EBAY, and the shop is a custom rod upholstery shop in Salt lake.

When I go to shop next I will get his name and number.

Having drove a first gen over 500,000 before I fell asleep and rolled it on the mountain road to my farm in Arkansas, and the fact that my son is driving my 94 at college, and my other son is driving an 87 extended cab at college, I agree, they go for ever, if you love them and don't get crazy. As well parts are every where, and as auto parts go, fairly priced in a huge market of nerds, mechanics, and maniacs.

The seat covers came from perfect stitch, South Jordan, Utah. His number is 801-280-8387

I think he will give you a deal, if you mention this Forum and the fact that your guys have build thread that are wildly popular. They were pricey, but not anymore than I would expect to pay for leather seat covers anywhere except Mexico...Mexico is out for me, as my time is worth more then I am willing to trade to get through the border crossings.

Wrong.

There was a reply from one of those 4-post spambots "niujj" that the OP quoted. The spambot has since been removed.

Being how you didn't specify any names in your post we had no idea of knowing who you were talking about. The way it looked you were talking about the the comment directly above yours.
