Windshield crack

So we had a small crack in the windshield that I neglected for a while thinking I will get to it this weekend or next weekend, this and that.... Now it's starting to spread and I can't get it repaired, has to be smaller than a quarter for them to repair it.

I really don't want to get it replaced with an aftermarket windshield. I'm sure most of the time they are fine but I have been in a few cars with aftermarket windshield and it looks like a magic mirror, not as clear basically.

I called the dealership and they want $1200 for an OEM windshield.

What do i do?!! Junk yards?

Call around to glass places. Most, if not all, will give you a price for OE glass, if you request it. IIRC, it was around $300 above the aftermarket glass. Mine was around $550 out the door for aftermarket glass (with heater elements), versus $800+tax for Toyota branded glass.

I feel your pain. I'm on my third windshield. Lost two traveling up the N.E extension in P.A. It seemed to me that the oem windshield did not stand up as good as the windshield I got from Safelite auto glass. They use a lot of cinder on the road up here and i was surprised by how pitted the oem windshield was. $520 for the replacement.. So far it seems the new windshield is holding up better. That's just my opinion. I will chime in again when I am on my fourth windshield.

Yessss. You can get the same piece of glass minus the almighty "Toyota" etching and save a few hundred.

Around here none of the dealerships replace windshields themselves. They either call out one of those mobile glass companies to come to the dealership or they drive it over to a glass shop to have it done. If that's what your dealership is doing, that explains the markup.

Different states auto insurance cover it differently, here in Colorado it's covered with a couple minor stipulations. [MENTION=75328]DannyLlama[/MENTION] not sure about CA but check your insurance. Probably covered in the link 1E sent though.

Nothing is free but if you are already paying for it in your car insurance you shouldn't pay all out of pocket.

I called and checked with state farm, same deductible. $500
Looks like an out of pocket expense. Yipeee

Out of curiosity do they pay for chips and small cracks to be repaired?

You can see where I'm going with that. Haha.
