Windshield Replacement

I guess it was finally my turn. Went out to clean the windshield today and found a 4 inch crack on the passenger side starting near the bottom. Any suggestions on who I should use to replace the windshield? Safelite? Dealer? Any other national chain?

I have numerous chips in the windshield and I have to believe this is the softest glass I've ever had on a vehicle. I am beginning to think a bug could cause a chip.

I am with ya on the soft glass bud. I got fine scratches just from hand washing mine.....real soft as far as I am concerned. I like Safelite, always treated me right in the past. Will insurance be involved? I would also gather their recommendations. Like all other chains, not every Safelite franchise are alike. You might have a better choice out there in your area. I had mine replace last year using a local auto glass shop. My insurance has $250 deductible. Since non OEM glass cost more than $250, I request OEM dealer glass(with Toyota logo on it) from insurance and shop. They agreed on that and did the replace. During installation, make sure they get the right glass that you agreed on. In mine case, their first visit brought a non-OEM glass and they have to do another trip.

Thanks for the responses. Turns out my insurance company uses Safelite as a preferred vendor. If it can be repaired it will be no cost to me. If I have to replace, the quote from Safelite was $438 including labor but not including fees. Unfortunately my deductable is $500. That'll teach me to go cheaper with the deductable. I'm going with the 0$ glass deductable from now. I've been driving for over 45 years now and this is the first windshield I've had to replace. Can't complain about that I suppose.

the higher deductible/cheaper insurance is the way to go.
especially if you arent replacing windshields every couple years.

the price difference should more than cover the cost of that windshield

Well the bad news is in. Crack is too long for repair. It actually got longer just sitting in the heat in my garage. Bye bye $450. I will check with insurance just to see how much $0 deductable glass coverage costs.

I can pretty much assure you the difference in the deductible vs premium cost for just the comprehensive insurance is minimal.....and with the 4runner, well worth the difference. You will be seeing more of Safelite in the future!

Now if your insurance company combines both collision and comprehensive insurance coverages and only supports one deductible for both at the same time, the premium difference can be substantial. But, those policies are the exception, not the rule, as compared to most of the policies sold around the country. Be Safe.

I've used Safelite twice. Once for repairs to windshield, and once when the windshield decided to crack dead center top to bottom in a carwash (never again going through an auto-wash). They are quick, professional, and they vacuum the floors!

I paid out of pocket. If it starts to look like I'll be doing this often, I'll go with a smaller deductible, but for now, I was able to eat $351 (no windshield defroster). That's why I have an emergency fund after all!

I've always had good luck with Safelite as well. Still have original windshield on my 97 4Runner and my daughters 03 Maxima. No issues at all.
