Wireless Charging

I have been working on this for the past several weeks and figured I would share this with everyone.

I designed a modular wireless charging tray that fits inside the center console. There is a single and dual charging option.

You can find the 3D print files and instructions here.

Feel free to provide any feedback.

If there is enough interest I may consider selling full kits.

Edit: I have sold a few of these and decided to list it on Etsy.

That's pretty good to be honest.

I was looking for a space to retrofit one around the dash and never thought of the center console, nice and hidden. what size charger are the for?

I am not sure what you mean by "what size charger are the for"? The qi charger is 15W and the charging area is 177.5mm x 91.7mm which should accommodate most devices.

Sounds like a neat concept. How would you power it?

Some trim levels of the 4th gen 4Runner already have an inverter and I believe a 12v socket in the console.

Mine sadly, is the base model SR5 so I added a USB charger inside the console by drilling a hole with a step drill. Since there is 12v right there for the 12v socket next to the driver it was a pretty quick and easy add. Otherwise the cable should be able to be routed out the side and be able to be neatly tucked in next to seat.

nice and hidden, great for people who cant put their phone down while driving.

Yes! That is part of why I chose that location.

I also recently installed a DMX1057XR and since it has wireless CarPlay it is not an issue to use navigation and take calls if need be. The charger is able to charge the phone while it's being used with CarPlay. It is slow but it still able to charge the phone more than the power it is using.

I'd be interested in having it if it came with the 10 / 15W charging capability.

Why reinvent the wheel? Just get a magnetic mount/wireless charger and a ProClip, etc. bracket to mount it to the dash. That way you can see your phone rather than have it inside the console. I've used such a setup for a long time and it works great.

I am not sure I would go as far and say this is reinventing the wheel but it is certainly an alternative option.

I personally do not like anything mounted to the dash. The previous owner had a pro clip in the car and frankly I thought it looked rather ugly and you could clearly tell it was not stock.

I believe this alternative solution keeps a stock look to the vehicle and has better aesthetics than something mounted on the dash. It is also more easily removed than something mounted to the dash.

Well, if you really want it inside the console, perhaps the easiest thing would be to still use an off-the-shelf magnetic mount there so as to hold it from flying around as the vehicle goes over bumps etc.

The easiest thing for me was to not buy anything but the wireless charger and design something myself that I decided to share that way anyone else that is interested can do the same :)

I was concerned that the phone would move around while driving and I would have to adjust the design to account for for that but I tested having my phone in the center console on bumpy, mountain roads/switchbacks, and gravel roads in the past few weeks and can confidently say that the phone did not budge or disconnect from the wireless charger.

I tested the wireless charger before designing the tray to see if it would have issues if the phone was not perfectly placed. The pad I chose luckily, still charges the phone even when its not perfectly placed on it. Which is one of the product's marketing claims on amazon.

This is brilliant. I love the clean look. Looks OEM.

Just let us know when you're ready to sell a kit. I have a wireless CarPlay unit in my truck, and certainly having a hidden charger is a big plus for me, especially when making short stops for gas and shopping.

I have a couple of people that have reached out and I am putting some kits together. Feel free to PM me and we can work out the details.
