Working on a thread and NEED MEMBER INPUT!

I don't think this will be busy and unsearchable at all. What may be easier is to do all the write-ups as planned but on the first or second post use a hotlink in the title of the repair to the post number that the actual repair is on. I can easily move posts around and help organize this thread if needed.

EatonKyleH One thing that I would do is make clear references to the FSM for the common tasks and maybe help elaborate on the steps per the FSM. This way everyone will feel more comfortable on doing electrical troubleshooting and repairs on their own. Most people are afraid to put a wrench on their 4runners but I think that they are intimidated by the lack of experience and mechanical confidence. If there was a "how to" that was based off of the toyota manuals then it will probably instill a good bit of confidence. I'm sure with you being a tech you have access to the FSM's but if you need a pdf file of the 3rd gen fsm let me know and I'll burn it to a cd for you this weekend.

That makes good sense to me! I'll probably put the link for the FSM in the beginning so everyone can read from the same page.

I am all on board for it Kyle, for electrical work for me, at least, can be daunting at times, even with the right equipment. Heck, I use a long screwdriver to check for injector pulse. But that is why I have CPA and some others, not ASE, after my name.

Thanks!
And honestly man I hate using titles anyway. I only find it needed on here sometimes so I don't sound like a kid who just measured voltage from a potato and dissimilar metals and now wants to blab about it to you all.

I opt not to wear ASE or my other patches on my uniforms even though my employer likes us too. I feel humility is the quality that allows me to grow. Master Tech, Master Chef, Master Chief. I'm not a super hero I just like that this forum provides a great amount of resources and I wish to add to it.

Not sure if you know about multi quotes but they will make replying to multiple people easier. Use the button to the right of the quote button and it will copy multiple quotes that you want to reply to. Just pointing it out in case you're not familiar with it.

Kyle, whatever you create here I'm sure will help me and others immensely. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

^^^This! Screw everything else. Been trying to figure this shit out for a while now.

This was easy. The back window can be operated by the rear lock. Insert key, hold unlocked and the window rolls down and vice versa.

I got a rear gate window switch from the center console of 96-98 4runner, mounted it in the rear gate, (cutting a rectangular hole) and tapped 3 wires in the harness on the rear gate.

I'll put up the wire colors in a little bit.

ASE huh? oh ya? i went to a engineering vocational school while in high school! i have one whole semester in digital electronics...BOOM!

i'm stoked to see the final deal though. vehicle electronics and and the ability one has to decipher the wiring diagrams confuses me.

E-locker retrofit wiring

You're welcome to use my super anal wiring diagram for an e-locker retrofit. We're one of the few documented to use factory parts even though we weren't pre-wired for an e-locker. Everything works, so I wouldn't hesitate to share.

It would be great if you could include a section about troubleshooting 4WD, specifically the A.D.D. system. We had trouble with ours, and while I found great info (mostly from TheDurk) it would be nice to have a more all-inclusive write-up in one spot. In our situation, we ended up replacing all the rubber vacuum lines, PLUS the hard lines coming off the front diff, which were seized up. All switches were good. The final hurdle came down to a loose connection with the 4WD indicator bulb in the instrument gauge cluster.

Thanks for your efforts.

Try reading a wiring diagram for a helicopter. It will make your head spin at first!

Wow. I didn't even know you could roll down the rear window like that. I really want it for when we crash in the back of the 4Runner. Would be nice to have window power. Looking forward to your response.:snacker::bravo:

I would do a thread with links to other threads that was easy to navigate.

I would volunteer to help with this one. I have a pretty large library of links (basically every decent 3G how-to I have seen since I joined YT in 2007) but it is completely unorganized and a lot of links are now dead or the pics are toast. But if someone was going subject by subject I could pick out a current list to be attached at the end for that subject. I just can't face organizing the whole thing at one time. Plus I'd want to search to see if there were anything germane I didn't see first time around as I do when I am actually doing a new project.

Thank you very much! I'll get in touch when I get to the point of adding all the linking electrical mod threads. I dumped a few hours into writing last night and it has now started to set in how massive of a project this will be. Using some good linking threads will be a must because I simply don't have the time to write up every mod someone has dreamed up and I don't really want every one of them done on my personal vehicle lol.

I will also need a few people to kind of "proof read" this thing when I get closer to posting it. I've got a few of you guys in mind but basically I want to have a common agreement that it flows well and is organized well privately before I release it. Just because it might make sense to me doesn't mean the average guy on here feels that way.

thanks again man and thank you guys for the encouragement!
After about the first 2 hours in last night I swear I would have dumped this thing if I hadn't gotten this level of interest.

Well let me just add myself to the list of those that are interested so you have even more motivation not to dump it :thumb3:

Thanks for taking on a project this big, and I look forward to seeing the results!

EatonKyleH: You know what would make my day?!

You doing a write-up on the seat wiring diagrams between the SR5 and the Limited.

Because I did a Limited seat swap into my SR5, and am having electrical issues. My driver side works flawlessly but my passenger side isn't fully operational.
The bottom works (like it slides back and forward) but the back doesn't lean forward/backward. It acts like there isn't any power, and the passenger seat belt warning light doesn't work either.

Those are the only two things that don't work, but oddly enough, after the swap, the Airbag light stays on after startup. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is bothersome.

My assumption would be that while tapping into ECU power wiring, I have hit the airbag power wire, and am not getting the proper voltage, and am also hindering the airbag functions. This is just my observation though. It is also a safety hazard to me, and would mean a great deal if you helped Eaton.

Have you considered making it an everything electrical thread?

Reserve the first 5 posts for yourself.

Thread to be the go to landing page for all electrical questions.

Create sub threads and put the links there with you controlling the landing page / homepage. Adding more links and data as time goes by.

Vs one single thread with volumes of data.

Ya that is pretty much the going concept in my mind.

The main page will have a big table of contents so people can go were they want and based on level of experience.

Thread on basic theory and circuit testing and terms.
Thread on reading the FSM wiring diagrams.
Thread on diagnosing a no crank no start.
Thread on diagnosing a crank no start.
Trouble codes thread and testing the related components
Thread of itemized popular electrical mods based on type (lighting, performance, convenience, etc)
Thread of tricks to get the ladies...

Etc etc....

I'm trying to keep the reader very mobile in the whole thing. If you don't know a volt from an ohm than cool we'll get into that. Struggle with wiring diagrams? If you want to get creative or take on a big project we can do that too without all the refresh.

If your passenger seat has partial power then the wiring to the seat is good. Most likely you have a bad seat motor. I have an extra set of leather seats tht are for parts, pm me and we can discuss getting you a motor if you want.

I ran my power and ground for the driver seatbelt sensor using the original two wires on the vehicle wiring harness for the seatbelt warning light. then ran another power wire from a 12v constant source from a power wire coming from the j12 plug that is just under the rear driver side seat. For the pass side seat, I ran power and ground from the same 12v constant wire and ground coming from the j12 plug from under the rear driver side seat.

I'm pretty sure you did not tap into an airbag power wire. All vehicles sold in the U.S. Market have a yellow wrapping around all airbag wiring harnesses. This is done so you don't mess with them unintentionally due to the danger of an airbag going off directly in your face while working on a vehicle and to identify safety equipment.

try wiring nuclear subs.... helicopters are easy. -said my cousin. thats what he did in the navy, that and in-route repairs on their electrical systems. the average nuc sub has over 2 millions miles of wiring -no thanks. now he works for nikon, and is whored out to intel on contract.... something about clean rooms and instals idk

anyhow to EatonKyleH, id love to see a steering wheel swap, i have the older 2 spoke wheel, and id love to swap to the 4 spoke wheel, i know the wiring is different.

and the window switches, i have a set of switches out of a 2000 or 2001 limited -drivers control panel has both driver and passenger auto up and down, and passenger control has auto up and down, i want to install those into my truck.
the issue is, when i plug them in, the doors instantly lock and nothing works, so yeah those are the two things id like to add after that id love to... idk even know where to start, i dont even know how i started with those two.... ahhhhh so overwhelmed

if you ever come out to portland area i owe you a dinner and a drink.
