Worth it?

I'm ready to buy a new vehicle and I DIG the new look of the 2015 4Runners! And I'm a Toyota guy, I currently own a DC Tundra and 3rd Gen 4Runner. I'd like to order a TEP with a few options...but I got to admit, after test driving it, I'm not sold. It wasn't as powerful as I'd like, nor was it as comfortable...but I'm not even close to liking anything else out there (ie Explorer, Durango, Cherokee, Xterra, etc).

So keepers of the 5th Gen, was it worth it for you? Are you happier or less satisfied with your rig then you expected to be?

Still love mine. Yes it is under powered but you get use to it. Why not keep the tundra and 3rd Gen? Make the 3Rd Gen an awesome trail rig and the tundra for when you need the power to tow something.
 
If you were not happy on the test drive you will probably not be happy in the long term either. I have never got used to the poor low end torque starting out on hills but I am other wise happy with the 4runner.

I hated my 2010 so much I traded it for a 2012 TE. I hated the TE so bad I traded it for a 2015 SR5 after only 70K miles. I hate this one really bad so I am driving it ten hours next week. /s

Thanks for the reply. I will keep both of them and I do have plans for the 3G, but I'm looking for a new daily driver and again, I really do like the look of the 5G's.
 
Totally worth it for me. My previous ride was an 05 Xterra and that was a very peppy truck but the 4R is like night and day when compared to it in every way. It's not a V8 but if you want it to go, you just push that skinny pedal down.
 
I hate mine sooooo much, I just continue to do stuff to it to see if I will like it more!

I love my 2015 Trail edition. I came from a 3/4 ton diesel 4 x 4 and I too was a little off put by the seeming lack of power. However after now having put about 9000 miles on the truck, I don't feel like it's really underpowered at all. Don't get me wrong it's no turbo diesel, it's a gas v6. You have to have realistic expectations. I do enjoy the 19 mpg mixed compared to the 13.5 in my diesel. ; )

I test drove one, and I liked it. So I bought one. Came from a '99 TRD Taco, so acceleration was about on-par (more power in the T4R, but also a lot more weight!).

As others have hinted at, if you didn't like it during the test drive, then you'll likely end up dissatisfied once the romanticism with the "fresh pretty face" wears off (just like dating :) ). But that face is a hard one to say "no" to!!! Especially considering your other listed options :hatsoff:

I've seen plenty of low-mileage T4R's for sale on this very forum due to people changing their minds shorty after purchase. You can pry mine from my cold dead hands!

Love my '15 TE. I really haven't felt like it was ever under-powered. The engine doesn't feel willing to rev but it's like a little freight train gathering momentum. Besides, if you are dragging your 4Runner you may have missed the point. It's a neat rig, that has less and less direct competition. If this is the kind of rig you are looking for, it defines the genre.
 
I still love mine, but I loved it the first time I sat in it. No regrets.

If you were not happy with it on the test drive though, you might want to keep looking.

You bring up 2 issues: performance and comfort.

One of which you can, and will, get used to. As discussed here interminably, the 4R will go like stink, but you gotta punch it. I'm quite used to it, and actually like it.

Now ... comfort. Noone can assuage you on this one. As [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] always says; test drive X 3. Get in a model with the electric seats, makes all the difference to my back.

I wouldn't get one honestly, you can't force yourself to like it.

If you can wait it out the next gen 4Runner is a few years out...
 
I just got a sr5 premium 3 months ago and still love it. Have you thought about test driving both the sr5 premium and the limited? Some say they have different rides and you may like one better than the trail you test drove. If you're going to have a 3rd gen to play with, will you need the trail features in the new one? At least that's my 2 cents.
 
I pretty much knew I wanted a new 4runner when I was shopping (came from a 3rd gen), and like you I was underwhelmed by the power. I disagree with those that say you don't get used to it - I absolutely have.

Like someone else said, it literally puts a smile on my face every morning when I hop in.

It was different at first coming from a Hemi Grand Cherokee, but you absolutely get used to it... we are driving SUV's not sports cars.

I'm interested to see how the new 3.5 Atkinson / 6-Speed auto does in the new Tacoma, and what it's rated at... I would love a little more power but not at the cost of fuel efficiency.
 
I have a low-mileage 2011 TE and I absolutely love it. I previously had a Dodge Nitro, so pretty much anything would be a step up. The gearing is a little strange--you have to get on the accelerator to be fast off the line--but my drag racing days are behind me. Whether I'm hauling tools, the fam or just commuting to work, though, it drives like it's brand new and handles everything I throw at it.

I've had an Xterra and a Tundra and am happiest with the 4Runner.
