XM satellite dealer upgrade

I know that some of us are looking at adding a satellite radio to our existing '03-'04 in dash 6-disk changer JBL systems. I thought about an add on system from Best Buy such as a "Commander" unit, but I'm glad I decided to wait.

I talked to the local Yota parts guy today and he gave me the parts list for the new Toyota XM sattelite upgrade for the 4th gen systems.

I was told these three parts consist of the satellite antenna, the reciever and a "credit card remote."

He said that the reciever will plug into the back of the radio, have the antenna mounted to the roof and be "factory," but he is unsure if the steering wheel controls will still work or exactly how it will work. They have yet to get the parts or do an install at this location, but I'm interested in getting it.

Anybody try this yet? How's it working?
I dont' want to dump money for parts and labor only to find that I don't want it....

Actually, I was refering to the XM tuner kit (tuner/ant/wiring) that you need with the HU (at least I think you need it... I know i need it with my XM ready Solara HU)

XM radio upgrade

I did a Google search on the part number (00012-XM001 ) listed in the thread and found this to be an Audiovox universal XM upgrade.

Can't find and typ of install information. Hope this isn't what Toyota is going to pass off as an upgrade.

moneypit -- I just checked out google and it led me to toyotaworld.com's accessory page. I'm a little dissapointed:dammit: I was hoping for a plug-in that would work through the factory radio, not with it.

I'd like to wait and see if this is really it.

XM Radio

This looks like nothing more than the Delphi Skyfi. You will have to add it to your system. The only advantage might be a direct conection to the unit. This will preserve the digital sound vs an FM modulator where the signal still goes through the FM circuitry of your existing radio and you will not be able to benefit from the excellent digital quality of the sound.

Here is some info on the fully integrated XM tuner for the Solora Radios. Again... this is an extra $488! YIKES!.. but it is a nice solution.

Just my own thoughts here.... I have the stock stereo in my 2001 4Runner and then installed Terk's XM Commander. I love it, came with everything needed to install it, activate it, and use it. I paid $134.00 for mine at Circuit City. I did have a problem with the first unit but exchange it and it's all good. I will spend some time in the morning installing the Commander.

There Is A Down Side To Aftermarket:
1.) Need to use a tape on a leash if you have a cassette player.
2.) If the above won't work for you then you would need to use FM Modulation which means you need to set the station on your radio to 87.9mhz.

I used the latter of the two and it's working out just fine. I could post pics if there is anyone that would like to see it.

Installion Question

GregTay,

I just bought the kit you show above but for a 07 Solara NAV for use in my 04 4Runner. Where did you mount that XM box? Did you have to get a separate set of brackets?

I noticed 3 ports on th XM unit,

one for antenna,
second for the Nav Data Port (same port as RSA/RSE)
third - not sure what this is for? No wiriing harness came with this port.

Does the Data port power the xm unit?
