Yet another cracked windshield!

I just had my windshield replaced with an OEM 4gen '06 windscreen. The installer told me that this the second time that the windshield has been replaced. The rig only has 21K on it. A small pebble from the tire of a big rig caught the screen just below the passanger wiper. How many of you have had a cracked windscreen?

I have had a cracked windshield replaced, but not on my 4Runner. It was on my kids '95 Honda Accord, which is the car I drove for 11 years until I bought my 4Runner.

You got an OEM replacement? Must have cost you around $1000? I know aftermarket windshields are around $200 installed.

Windshield cracks are dependant upon where you live and how much you drive. They put gravel on the road here for snow, and there is a lot of construction going on, so I've already had a couple of good-sized chips on my windshield (which I got filled right away).

Just watch who you're following (Honda Civic, not as bad. A lifted truck with 33's and no flaps, bad.) Also, there are people that think the lane doesn't end on the white line, but on the edge of the shoulder, so they go driving right through all that gravel on the side of the road, flinging up all kinds of mess. I usually try to switch to the other lane to avoid paint/glass chips.

Yup, got mine replaced with OEM glass too. Didn't cost me a dime as StateFarm has a $0 deductible on windshield glass replacement. Would have cost $500 including labor if SF didn't pick up the bill...

My bill was 1600 euro! That is close to $2000.00! I was happy to pay my $500 deductable.

I am on my second windshield for my '03 4runner

I only had my 4Runner for two weeks before the windshield got cracked. Replacement glass is still holding up I guess. I've only had to get one small chip/crack repaired so far.

My previous 4Runner ('04 SR5) took on a lot of rocks since I travel on farm roads quite a bit. But the last rock to hit it cause a crack that grew an inch each day. My insurance paid for the windshield...I paid the $100 deductible. Didn't bother to ask if it was OEM or aftermarket, but I cringed when within a week it took on another rock. This time, the rock didn't leave a mark.

Wondering if the aftermarket product is better than the OEM for handling rock attacks?

YAY! I'm lucky! I drive over 55 (It's a divided highway for like 8 miles, so I wouldn't consider it a expressway) everyday for work and used to drive 75 on the express way to a different job and always had stones and crap. Its pretty pitted and hope to replace it in 2-4 years.

Mine cracked last year and was replaced with a made in japan oem windshield by Toy for about $140 (they covered most of the cost). Mine had pits all over, but it was a tiny pit just under the passenger side wiper that did it. You could hardly tell it was there, except when running a tip of a pen along the crack that there's a little friction/drag in that spot. As some of you may remember my post last year, it cracked while I was washing my baby on a hazy day. Didn't think it would happen as I only had pits and no stars at all.

Since then, I've picked up a hand full of pits on my 2nd windshield. I might just have to find another insurance co w/a $0 glass ded. I have Mercury, but then again, I get what I pay for.

Around here if you drive 4 seasons, you'll be going through a windshield every year or 2 it seems, even with good luck.

Just replaced mine through safelite. I only had my baby for couple months. I was cringin when the guy was ripping my baby apart. Clean install though. Lost that "rain-x effect" of the OEM, but for whatever reason it doesn't get as dirty as OEM did. Overall, satisfied with installtion and dissatisfied with stupid weak OEM windshield.

Note: Installer told me he had 2 more 4runner windshields to do on the same day I got mine done. He says he has done so many that its easy. Probably why it only took the guy 15mins to replace the windshield.

I rained last night and my head liner is water logged. The 2K replacement is leaking! What a nightmare. It took the guy 2 1/2 hours to do the job as well!

Sounds like he didn't know what he was doing. Safelite did it in less than 1 hour...

Just wondering, when you had your windshield replaced did you take it to a shop or have a mobile unit come to your house or work to do the work?

When I had my windshield replaced I took it to their shop. I asked the shop people about their mobile service.
They said they offer that option for customer convienence but prefer to do the work in-house.
They said that doing the replacement in house helps them control temperature, weather and
physical conditions (ie Level surface) which can negatively impact the quality of the work (ie water leaks).

So I assume Mercury does not have a glass policy... I use them cuz they're hundreds cheaper than other insurers and I've also had 3 vandalism/damage claims with them (o a previous truck), all were handled flawlessly and none of them had any impact on my premium. Can't complain.

This was a mobile unit - I found the best location that I could flat and shaded. If there were two people I believe that the job wuold of gone better.

I'm really starting to belive that the Toyota water repellent gass is not worth the cost and effort. It is too fragile - look at the poll results!
