Your 4Runner Gas Mileage

I have a 1997 Tacoma, and I was looking at upgrading into an 03 or newer 4Runner 4X4. I was wanting the V-6 for gas mileage. What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting out of your 4Runners?? I can't decide V-6 or 8?

Between 11-13.4 mpg city and 18-19mpg highway. That's not driving it hard either, that's what I get when I don't take it over 2,000-2,500 rpm with my V8.

Don't plan on getting what it's supposed to.
 
I normally get at or slightly above what I'm supposed to... gas, elevation perhaps?

I.e. 18-20 mpg combined.

Thats pretty good. I was wanting the V-6 due to the gas mileage, and there doesn't seem to be much of a horsepower difference between the 6 and the 8.:biggrin2:
 
I drive at sea-level and with mixed driving I get 18.5-19.5 (using a calculator not the 10% optimistic dislpay).

Some other factors: The V8 drive so SWEEEEEEET! The V6 drives very well. The V6 has no timing belts to replace and very easy oil filter access.

I'd be concerned if my 4th gen was getting 11-13mpg since there might be a bigger issue if you aren't getting on it and still suffering with H2 MPGs. .

My friend gets 15-17 in the city with his '06 V8 and he's a little agressive when accelerating on the on ramps. Last road trip out to Las Vegas he got 22mpg which pretty much matches mine but he's got alot more ponies.
 

I had a 2005 SR5 with the V6. I drove it for three years and just over 33,000 miles. My "average" MPG in local driving was 16 or 17 - figured with actual miles divided by gallons (not the optimistic trip computer). On the highway, I could get 19.5 to 22.0 - depending upon how I drove. [Note: If you can keep it down to 50 to 55 mph on smaller highways without a lot of stop and go driving; it is not unreasonable to get 23 or 24 miles from each gallon.....but what fun is that?]

The 4Runner rides so nicely that it "begs" you to keep above 70 mph. I drove my 4Runner to upstate NY once and to Michigan three times. In rather spirited driving, I still hung in at 20+ mpg for every trip. Once you get over 70 to 75 mph (only where it is easily done safely, of course), keep in mind that you are pushing a brick through the wind! Aerodynamic design is not the best quality of an SUV, particularly the 4Runner.

My new V8 Mustang GT gets 16 to 18 around town (pretty much the same as a V6 4Runner), but will consistently get 22 to 24 miles per gallon on the highway at 75+ mph. A more aerodynamic design, less weight and taller gearing help a lot with the Mustang. Heck, sometimes I forget to upshift into fifth because the RPMs are still rather low. I believe the Mustang's rear axle gearing is something like 3.08:1 -- rather tall. (Even so, that exhaust note makes you want to 'step on it' a lot.)

If you are only concerned with fuel economy, the 4Runner IS NOT the vehicle for you. If you really want a 4Runner, consider getting a four-cylinder beater car that you can use for commuting duty. Maybe a Sentra, Corolla, Civic, Spectra, Tercel or Neon might fit your needs.

I average about 18 city and 24 highway...not an easy driver either. Gotta love the increase in MPG that the Volant and Magnaflow combination provides. As well as running Royal Purple 5w30. Although im currently running Shell Rotella T Syn in a 5w40 variant after running Castrol 0w30 for a extended drain.

What would you suggest, take it to the stealership? It might actually be lower now that I have the lift/tires.

I used to get around 20 on the highway but after the lift (daystar) and 265/70/17 BFG all terrains I lost one or two MPG.

Your tires shouldnt make that much of a difference and I havent noticed much difference with the lift. You are in Cali after all, lots of stop and go?
 
MPG depends on how and where you drive.
I get 18-19 MPG with my 07' V8 4WD. (only 2300 miles on the ODO)
If I set the cruise at 55-60 mph 20+mpg is easy.
My main driving is 4 lane roads with 55-70 mph posted speed limits here in somewhat rural TX.
The key is to avoid using the brakes.

Mobil 1 and proper inflation helps too :D

Cool, thanks. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY A V-6 MODEL REALLY CHEAP???
