ZUK mod? Yes? or No?

Should I do the ZUK mod? I wanted to see if anybody had any reasons why I shouldn't do it. Horror stories? etc. Also if I were to do it should I do the 12 or 14 inch springs? Do the 14 inch springs raise it too much? more than even?

I did mine with the Black Magic coils everybody uses, and I didn't like it. It rode well on the street but I sacrificed lots of flex. [MENTION=47812]ToyoTech[/MENTION] is using... TJ coils? I think that's what he said, and he likes his all right. They appear to be a skinner coil, so they'll compress farther. I've seen guys mention using 3rd gen coils too.

I think the right way to fix sag/lift the rear is to rebuild your spring pack.
 
Its not so much the length of the coil, but the spring rate. Kidv, do you remember what your black majic sprinigs were? From what I remember in reading stuff, 100-125 is ok, 150 seems to be too stiff?

If you can swing it, new springs would be the best way to fix.
 
So maybe a 12" 125 would be better?

When my runner was saggy, I threw 2 leafs (1 long, 1 short) in on each side out of another old toyota pack. Picked up the rear and flexed great.
 
I couldn't say. The problem I had was that the coil would fully compress before the suspension was maxed out, limiting my uptravel. The 12" coil would have had the same trouble I think, it just wouldn't have lifted as high in the first place.

My theory is that the less overall material is in the coil, the smaller it is at full compression. The Black Magic springs are cheap, and probably made of inferior metals, so more metal overall is used leading to more wraps and thicker coils for a given spring height and load rating. If I were going to do a Zukmod again, I'd look for the skinniest lightest coils I could find. I'd look at OEM takeoffs, they seem to have skinnier coils and fewer of them?

I ended up pulling my Zukmod and stuffing more leaves in the rear too. Two leaves from a Taco pack on each side lifted it just enough to balance the BJ spacers in front, and no funky coils. I liked that much better.

I'm using 3rd gen rear runner coils and didn't lose any flex. I can still invert my leaf springs and that's with factory bump stops.
Get more droop if you run a longer shock as well
The 3rd gen coils are also 16 inches long and have be like 2.5-3 inch lift. Bet you could cut them down for less lift

Can kinda see it hasn't hit the stock bump stop but the springs are inverted




Any more flex I would rub my body on 32 tires

As a quick fix, I'd definitely would do it again. For a long term solution, not sure.

I picked a pair of 3rd gen coils up as well from a pick a part for less than $30. Jacked up the truck, threw them in there and bam.....no more bone jarring ride. Personally, my ride still seems rather rough, especially slow stuff but I think alot of that has to do with the shocks more than anything. I have the rs5000 and think they are just too stiff. I don't get near the flex out of mine that toyotech is showing. Not sure if its a difference in the life left in the used 3rd gen springs, shocks or something else. I couldn't ride on the flat springs anymore and didn't have the cash for anything else. I don't see any negatives on running them so at the very least, it was fast and cheap. Will I keep them....don't know, but I'd definitely do it again in the same circumstances.
 
So my only worry is that Im cutting into the bumpstop... this may be a stupid question but couldn't that lead to problems later on?
 
You don't have to cut it, there's springs that will slip completely over it. And if you do trim it and decide you want it back later on, it's easy to weld on another.
 
Why the f do u need the zuk mod for? Your truck sits level. Don't be fooled by the smaller rear wheelwells. I bet if u measure the frame height front n rear it would be the same. Spend ur money elsewhere. :biggrin1:

Probably because he hits a bump and his backbone goes through his jaw! :first:

The larger coils like the TJ or 3rd gen springs just slip over the bumpstop.....no surgery required.

not quite as good as a linked suspension, but should be better than straight leafs. use the coil for the suspension, and the single leaf to position the axle.

I might have to try this on my 85.
 
My truck rides really nice. Maybe it is ur shocks... I have the RS9000s. Set to 5 on the front and 2 on the back(when empty). When I had my tent trailer, I'd crank em up to 5. After I'd unhook tho the ride was very stiff until I turned em back down.

I've though about it. I wonder if just the main leaf would have too much torsional flex. I think you might have to run a panhard link, and then you might as well go three link or radius arm any, right?

I think it would be ok.
they make(made?) single leafs for jeeps. they were lifted springs even.

the problem with linking the rear, particularly the panhard bar, you have to relocate the fuel tank. as it is right in the way.

I haven't crawled under and paid close attention, but maybe it would be possible to run the PHB from the other side? dunno.
I think a single leaf would work. I may try it. I would have to come up with the proper leaf to coil ratio. I don't think my 3" procomp leaves would work. altho, I have a LOT of projects going on..

I still haven't mounted my bumper or winch. its still sitting in my living room.....
 
This week, I'll be removing an AAL from my rear leafs and installing the 14" 125# Black Magic coil springs. It's a temporary solution for better on road ride IMO. Long term, I'm either swapping to 63" chevy leafs or complete OME rear.

I'm trying to decided between Bilstein 5100s or OME Nitrochargers currently :roadkill::noidea:
 
I was using a brand new updated version of the 3rd gen coil and was still able to stuff it that far. I think the shock is not allowing any more up travel anyways so.

Sucks I'm gonna lose my 666 post count. Fav number too lol

It's what I tell everyone. I have a budget rear link set up lol.
You would have to take into consideration what spring rate you would need to make up for that lack of springs. Plus it may not be tall enough for a SA since they can droop much more. I know guys that run coils with a SA for some lift front and rear.


Let me know if you find a set of 5100 that can cycle the entire length from compression to droop. I know I couldn't but I was looking at direct fit since I'm still running stock mounting points.
OME was a direct and perfect fit. Gain some more droop too.
