Today I was let down again by my 4Runner. For the past week or so, despite the high idle it has been consistently starting, running, and all that. And today, refused to start again. Seems exactly as it was when this debacle started. Got little puffs of smoke from exhaust while cranking. Wondering if perhaps the starter just isn't spinning it fast enough to kick over properly? No idea on age of starter. Running out of easy home garage fixes and rule outs. Sunday will likely be its second tow truck ride, this time to the shop.
CrudRunner, forgive me as I haven't read each of your update posts, so you may have done this already.
My best guess is you have a combined issue between a bad battery and a bad starter. A bad battery can wreak havoc on electrical systems, including your starter, but also the electrical components that keep the truck running.
You could also have a bad starter along with the battery. Have you tried doing the hammer/tap test while cranking? Easy way to confirm. If you do have a bad starter, it's more than likely the internal components. Dealership sells the components kit for surprisingly cheap and it's easy to install. Unbolt the housing, unbolt the housing shell, slide in/out old and new components. Way cheaper if you have to replace that starter.
I had an issue several months ago of intermittent starting issues. We replaced the starter, the components kit, etc. Turned out it was the battery, but we put all that other work in too. Haven't had a problem since.

Looked at it, felt sad and excited at the same time. I need new cv axles, both sides have ripped, but the passenger side is in suuuuper rough shape.
I did buy the Napa 1258 axles online though, so I’m excited to get new parts. $442.64 out the door directly from Napa’s website. So I’ll be getting those taken care of relatively soon, but the stress and anxiety is weighing over me tremendously at the moment

Thanks Jeff, wouldn't expect folks to read my whole sob story. But to answer your questions. The battery is about a week old. Starter age I have no idea. But it does crank immediately and strongly. It is one of the last "easy" options I have to available, and one that I'm likely going to pursue after the shop gets its hands on it next week.
This morning was significantly colder than the last, truck fired up on the first crank, like instant start. Tonight on way home from work it cranked a bit, then started. Didn't want to idle on its own though, needed some pedal love.
Speaking of any recommendations in the Bend, OR regions from anyone in here? It has been to Funkewerks, and will be going there again, but I'd like options.
A hair different than the usual 4runners posted here…the plowrunner set up! Pushes like a champ with the chains. Big 3, 220amp alt upgrade to accommodate the plow and lights on top of the normal vehicle draws. The frame has beaucoup rust damage in the rear so it’s a yard truck till complete failure. Hopefully a few seasons.

Thank you! This was a combination of DIY and professional body shop work - I removed all the cladding and sanded it myself, and also reinstalled it, along with all new seals, clips, gaskets, etc. The body shop just had to shoot the paint.
I paid about $330 for painting the cladding, but that's artificially low because it was part of a bigger paint job for a fender and a door, so the cost of mixing the paint and similar prep was already absorbed by that job.

I moved over the last 2 days. 4runner hold alot for the size and pulled a little trailer. I think some time in the near feature the steering will need some work. Its gotten pretty stiff over the year. Not sure if the pump is getting weak or the rack is just wearing out. Time to dive into the forums and see what the issue is.

This is going to be fairly involved... unfortunately.
OEM seats are out and ready for Lexus LS460 seats. Wiring is functional, but I will need to remove the under the passenger seat heater for the rear, and the "humps" under the front of the front seat brackets, so a bit of cutting and welding coming up. These seats are also much deeper than the originals, making me feel horrible for whoever has to sit in the back (likely never happening), but I am mounting them so that I can sit further back than the OEM seats ever allowed.
Seats just sitting in there for now as a preview:

Just finished the tundra brake swap. Went super easy, rebuilt the calipers myself. Found calipers at junkyard. Cleaned up and painted. Brembo rotors and Bosch pads, toyota oem rebuild kit.
Pressure bleeder made the bleeding job easy. Pedal is firm and not mushy. Bedding went smoothly and stinky.
Next up is rear wheel bearings and rear disc brake swap.

Swapped out my OME 890's for LC80 7.5 wraps (Toyo part# 48131-6A480), so much happier with how it leveled out the T4R. I got 1 3/4" lift at the tire and ~3" for the rear bumper. Also, I have a set of OME 890's for sale now

Finally put my 5th tire (on a matching OEM wheel) under the truck. The new K02 in 265/75/r16 fit perfectly up against the tow hitch with what seems like plenty of clearance behind the panhard bar.
Went Christmas Tree hunting, and parked next to this nice stock Limited at the hardware store

What I would like to do today is replace my windshield. Does anyone know where I can find one less than the $350 asking price for new? I have searched junk yards within 200 miles of metropolis Illinois and cannot find a good one. Can somebody tell me of a manufacturer that sells new reasonably or know of a used one?

Have you bothered to call local INDEPENDEDNT glass repair places? Mine wants $250 to come to my house and do an install (I only call one, he's done several windows for me and folks I know). Don't bother with safelite, do the Tiny bit of work needed to find the independednt. Heck, I've hired guys off Craigslist in the past to come to me and do the install (actually, that was probably the best experience of them all).
