Yeah, I really wanted to avoid using nuts on the back of the bracket, as they would be nearly impossible to reach, so rivnuts saved the day. My other option was to tack weld some nuts to the back of the bracket, but rivnuts seemed easier.

Speaking of Aerospace engineering, a fun fact - we usually prefer to use through bolts and nuts, rather than screws going into blind holes. It makes verification of full engagement easier, and is easier to repair when threads get messed up. This is very different from automotive practice, where usually it's a screw installed into a tapped hole, or a nut threaded over a stud. Probably because that makes it easier/faster/cheaper to assemble or disassemble. [/nerdiness]

Saved a 4Runner from the crusher :thumb3:
My friend's wife recently wrecked their 97 SR5 into a tree during the latest snow storm. Impact was practically smack dab onto the driver's side "tong" of the frame that sticks out and gave it a pretty minor tweak inwards, along with some damage to suspension and body of course (snapped LBJ, bent tie rod, crunched bumper+fender, tweaked door+hood, etc). The body shop it was sent to was too good at their job and noticed the frame damage during their inspection and took photos as evidence to send to insurance, so they were very quick and eager to write it off as totaled. Very unfortunate as it still looked and sounded fine mechanically, the vehicle was totally rust free and the frame damage could've very easily been fixed
Sat around thinking about his options for a couple days before I thought of approaching my coworker; a fabricator and previous 3rd gen owner. I know he's always regretted selling his 4Runner (2002 Sport) and he's recently been talking about how he wants another but can't find one that's decently priced, so I pitched him the offer and within 5 minutes he was on the phone trying to rent a trailer from U-Haul :cell:
Going with him to take it off their hands this weekend for an even $1000 and begin building once again, only this time it's not going to be limited by being a daily driver - or be limited by paved roads at all, for that matter. Wondering I can convince him to SAS it... :eyebrows: Super happy to see it continue living out it's life, it would've really sucked to see it get crushed. Even a part out would've been a better fate than that

I finally got rid of this toasted foam. I replaced it with foam from a donor seat.

And back together. The reassembly required only 2 hog rings, which wasn't hard, but I needed both hands, so no pictures.

While I had the cover off I soaked it in a bucket of oxyclean. That water was nasty.

I also did some epoxy work to fix the side plastics. It worked pretty good.

Finally swapped in the manual hubs, new OEM seals and bearing, replaced the UCA with a JBA UCA, and got it aligned.

Figured out why I was having a misfire when my engine was cold. I could hear a clicking noise when it would misfire and noticed is was actually a coil pack arcing to the valve cover. Ordered a new OEM one as the one on there was a aftermarket one from the previous owner. Also have a new oil pressure switch on the way as mine is leaking.

Good find on the voltage leak :lol: but seriously good job finding that. Some of those especially when it's the boots can be hard to find.

Call me crazy, but I returned my Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 and purchased Kirkland’s Signature full synthetic 5W-30 (made by Warren Dist.) and I can’t wait to try it out. I’m also going with a Wix 51516 XP filter instead of the YZZD3 I always use. I was a diehard AMSOIL fan boi for 73,000 miles until I switched to PUP. But I’m no purist at almost 310K on my 01. Roast me.

Replaced my blinker assemblies. The originals were hazy, pitted, and cracked.

I went with with aftermarket replacements (CarLights360 TO2530133 + TO2531133). They do seem lower quality but not too bad, they were cheap and seem like they’ll be good enough. Time (and weather) will tell. They certainly look great right now since they’re not cracked or hazy (yet):

I'll keep my originals as spares since they still work just fine.

I also replaced the license plate light bulbs (Sylvania 2825 Long Life) and the corner light bulbs (also Sylvania 2825 Long Life).

The corner light bulbs have been burnt out since I bought the truck, and appear to be original or at least genuine Toyota bulbs:

Flushed the power steering fluid today in attempt to fix the sudden high pitch whining noise when driving/turning the wheel but unfortunately the service didn't fix it. Truck needed the flush anyways.

New tires... Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain AT (only available at Discount Tire) LT265/75R16 E1 ply rating. I really like these tires so far and they were a decent price, and in stock. I was skeptical of getting E rated after having KO2 E1 but these UltraTerrains ride totally different they are much more squishy. The KO2s might as well have been filled with sand. Feels like these need more psi than the KO2s. Started off at 36 and been going up 2 psi at a time and at 40 currently. We'll see how well the sidewalls hold up on these. They seem like Discount Tire asked Goodyear for a mix of Duratracs and Wildpeaks AT3Ws or something like that. They throw rocks like crazy though, it sounds like someone is shooting at my car after I drive on gravel with the rocks getting thrown off.

Deleted the hood insulator which was turning in to dust. If you do this I recommend putting a drop cloth over the engine and wearing a respirator and safety glasses for the fiberglass dust. All the clips broke off inside the hood and/or fell on the engine.

New starter. I was going to do the contacts, plunger, etc. and then remembered I had replaced it before with some O'Reilly type Chinese one ages ago, so I got a Denso reman from Napa (280-0166 1.8 kw). If you can't finangle the way to get it out/in the wheel well remove the UCA nut and push the bolt in, go have a smoke or meditate for 10 mins, then try again.

I've been having idle and stalling issue while stopped in D or very very lightly touching the gas pedal, which had been coming and going for years. I thought it was probably the TPS or maybe ECT sensor but was too lazy to replace it. Well it finally lit up the CEL (first time EVER the 4runner has thrown a code in 250k miles!!). Yep... P0120 throttle position sensor.

Holy crap I should have replaced this ages ago it drives so much better. I think it may have fixed another issue I thought was a driveline problem where it will "thud" occasionally when I let off the gas completely on the highway. Makes sense that would be the TPS but not the first thing you would think think of.
