A great thank-you to Andries at T120. This is his hard work not mine.

What it's like after the mod is complete:
In 2wd dash lights are on (VSC & Diff lock). I didn't mess around enough to decide if VSC is working, traction control IS working; I'm assuming it has full VSC. It has all the familiar noises and accompanying reduction in power. The system seems to get confused if you attempt to change from 2HI to 4HI with the switch on. Lights get stuck in flash mode.

In 4HI it works as advertised You have an unlocked Torsen center diff and no interference from the VSC; the VSC and Diff Lock light are on. You can definitely feel/hear ATRAC doing it's thing. The same deal in 4LO... I can lock and unlock the diff while in 4HI (or 4LO) with my switch on. It locks & unlocks ok. When unlocked the diff lock light continues to flash even after the diff unlocks. It is not a perfect mod. It beats the heck out what Toyota gave from the factory. I am thrilled!

My advice is to not do a mode change with the added VSC switch on (grounding the wire). I may retract/amend that as I learn more. For now I plan to lock and unlock the diff, switch 4HI to 4LO with my added VSC switch in the off (ungrounded or open) position.

The bottom line is it's a great mod that facilitates the use of 4HI and 4LO without VSC interference and the center diff unlocked.

Andries saved me thousands! I was having serious 'VSC-off' envy of the 2008 guys!

This is the original Andries, aka Bulldog, thread: VSC Disable on Pre 2008 4Runners - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

For further discussion of what the mod will do and why you may or may not want it read here:can you turn off the vsc? - Page 3 - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

Below are some how-to pics Battery should be disconnected for this procedure! There's a TSB that discusses the risks; basically disconnect the battery. Do not turn or change 4wd mode knob until it's all back together and powered up.

2004 checking in! Big Thanks to Wolverine for tracking down that stability control module. I was read to run a wire across to the 4x4 module from the button's plug when I finally found you post. Cut the red/white and spliced it into the Red/blue, everything worked exactly as described!!

2004 4WD V8 4Runner Trac Off Button

Hey Y'all,

I did some serious investigation to figure out how to cleanly defeat the TRAC control on the 4Runner. After wiring diagram searching I finally figured out that we're pre-wired for a TRAC OFF switch. I pulled the panel under the steering wheel and found the 2 clips tucked up and away above the fuse panel. There's one with a blue clip and one black. The wiring diagram shows that there is a red wire with a white stripe. That wire is in the BLUE harness clip. So that's what I'm using. Ordered a TRAC OFF switch today from eBay. Part number: 84988-AE010. The button from a 2WD for "AUTO LSD" is equivalent to this switch, just reads different. If you need that part number, its 84988-35050. But to be consistent, I wanted my 4WD to have the TRAC OFF reading on the button.

Getting the button next week. Will update then.

So I bought a switch on eBay. Installed the thing and it lights up. Doesn't matter what mode I put the truck in, nothing comes up on the dash to confirm Trac has been turned off... super frustrating. I'm not totally abandoning the idea, but I'm wondering if the button isn't working quite right.

I know this is only three days old but if you have some more luck with this please update, I have an 05 and want to keep this mod as clean and oem as possible. Interested in if you can get this to work.

Sorry I haven't had any time at all to further investigate. If anyone else is willing to find a TRAC OFF switch on eBay, Amazon, or a junkyard, the crowd-sourced information would be super helpful. I'm really hoping my button is just not working/I don't know the sequence to put it into trac-off mode. If anyone has any information on how to do the Trac-off procedure for 2008/09 4Runners that could be helpful too.

I'm waiting on a 84988-AE010 switch to come in from Toyota. I think we have to take this a step further. And cut the red white wire and tap it into the red/blue wire at the skid control ECU as demonstrated by @SSt4r . My skid control ECU is under the dash on the left side in my 2003. I think later years it was moved to under the hood at the ABS module.

Here's my thread on this issue. Even though it's been covered numerous times I had a hard time wrapping my head around it. I think the basic gist is all you are doing is grounding out red/blue wire which is tricking the ECU into thinking the CDL is engaged.

Ok this is pretty simple. Modify your switch to become on/off instead of momentary. This was the hardest part for me. Find your skid control ECU. On my 03 it was under the dash to the left if the parking brake. Find the connector with the red/white wire. Cut the red/white wire and tap it into the red/blue wire with a wire tap. Plug up your modified connector to the existing wiring harness in the dash. You can now push it whenever and the "VSC OFF" light comes on. My CDL light didn't come on. Only the VSC OFF light came on.

klavender1 - thank you for the good work!

Have you given the "trac off" features out? Meaning, did you successfully defeat all of the nannies by just pushing the button?

I'm gonna say yes? I was only able to test it out in my yard. So not much room to really get on it. But stomping it on dry grass it never cut out.
