Hmmmm - are we saying then that JBL upgrade is not worth it, or do we think we're talking about some random issues?

Take a listen for yourself...and determine if it's worth it. Listen to it in the driver's, passenger, and rear seats. Just only you can determine that...as is the case with all audio choices (home & auto).

I haven't noticed any major issues with it. I will admit its not hte best sounding, however coming from a ford, or other american cars, it does sound pretty decent to me. I installed my own stereo in my last truck, and that definetly sounded better, but so far I have not felt the toyota stereo sucks. Somethings I listen to sound better than others, but overall its ok for now. I'd like to install a new stereo sometime, however I like the look of the factor headunit, because it looks like it belongs there. My roomate has an 02 nissan maxima, and I am not very impressed with the stereo in that car, the toyota sounds much better.

What upgrade? If you're talking about the premium system aka Sythesis, that's the system that we are having trouble with.

I've actually been very surprised at how good this system can perform! I say *can* perform because there are certain CD's I've played that don't sound that great. The Synthesis seems to be very sensitive to how the music was produced/mixed/mastered. Another thing I've noticed is that certain songs will sound awesome with the "surround" mode on, while others are best with it left off. It's annoying to have to switch between these modes all the time, but it makes a big difference.

Sorry Cobra but I also have issues with my JBL system. Think I'm going to replace the front 6x9's so I don't have to turn it up so loud to get the bass I want, at the same time piercing my brain with all the high pitched treble!

I'm very underwhelmed with this system, but since I just recently bought my 4runner used, I had no choice in which system I bought since I know I wanted the Limited. (In Canada, all Limiteds have the JBL 10 speaker system). But I suppose it's still better than the SR5 system.

What I really would like is to replace my head unit with the ones from the '06 and '07's for the MP3 playback!..........

Part III:

In your 4runner (2003) JBL system, you have a 6x9 woofer and 0.75" tweeters in the front. You also have a tweeter on top of your dash (to provide a center channel). The rear door speakers are around 6.5" and they are coaxial (woofer + tweeter combined together). The cargo area has a 6.5" woofer in an enclosure which acts like a mini-subwoofer.

What about the two small speakers in the cargo area that go in place of the little mirrors? Are they tweeters, and if so, why are they there? BTW in my truck those two speakers sound like shit if I have it on surround sound and turned up loud.
