I've checked Wal-Mart by me but they just have the 0w-30. If i wanted 0w-20 they have a Valvoline version of it, but I like my Mobil 1. I can get the Mobil 1 0w-20 stuff online at O'Reilly Auto for about $7 a quart.

Keep checking. My local Wally World had a few single quarts in the past, but just this week started carrying the 5 gallon jugs of Mobil 1 (MUCH cheaper than buying the quarts). I noticed that the 0W20 jugs are redesigned over the other 5 gallon Mobil ! containers, so that may be one reason (new distribution) why this weight has not been stocked up to this point.

Well, I read the letter you posted. It is interesting that Toyota is recommending sythetic oil. If they put 0W20 in the beginning, I would say changing it quickly may not be the way to go. Instead of changing it at 1,500 miles or so, I would go to 4 to 5 thousand miles the first time. I am not sure what would be best for after that. I would think 10,000 oil change might be a bit too long, but it does look like they are asking for longer oil changes.

Can you provide any official verification about the change? I've been hearing about it for months, but still haven't seen anything from Toyota yet. When I mentioned it at my dealer, they looked at me like they didn't know what I was talking about and I can't find anything "official" to back it up. Any help would be appreciated.

I just got an updated owner's service manual mailed to my house and it included a letter highlighting that the new recommendation is synthetic 0-w20 with 10k/6mon oil change intervals.

Interestingly, they also added "Check driver floor-mat fasteners" to every 5k interval. :lol:

I read the Tech letter synthetic oil on the Toyota and the letter was quite specific on NOT using MOBIL1 syn for oil in the 4Runner. (Maybe it was based on the older Mobil 1 syn and not the new W20...?hmmm)

This is the first I've heard of a letter stating not to use use Mobil 1 in a Toyota. Do you have a link to it? I know I used Mobil 1 my 3rd gen without a hitch.

Like others, I just received my maintenance log in the mail with the letter prescribing 6 mo/10K oil changes, if you use 0W20. Well, it actually says, if you use synthetic 0W20 Genuine Toyota Motor Oil. The letter does not preclude use of any other brand 0W20 synthetic motor oil. However, this may not be the letter that you referring to in your post.

For do-it-yourselfers: Where are you buying your oil? Advance Auto Parts carries 5W-30 and 5W-40 that my current vehicles require, but I don't remember seeing 0W-20 there. I'd figure most shops would have it now because Toyota transitioned over to 0W-20 w/ the 2009 Corolla/Matrix. I believe the V6 Rav takes 0W-20 as well (maybe 5W-20).

I think Toyota's OEM oil is Mobil, btw.

can anyone confirm who manufactures Toyota synthetic oil?
