$115 For Spare Key

So I want to get a spare key that only works as an emergency key if I lock my keys in my car. I don't care if it works to start the 4r I just want it to open the door. My local hardware shop will not make a key for me. The dealership is going to charge $115 to make a key and program it. I will likely angle grind the key to fit in a super secret location for a hide-a-key. I don't want to blow $115 for a second spare key. And I am assuming programing the key to the car is a simple as just some turns and button pressing.

Any suggestions?

But it seems like the outside lock is just mechanical. Can't I just get one made and use it for the outside lock?

Did this change from the early 5th gens.? I had Home Depot make a few for me and the keys do just want the OP says: get you in but not start it.

You're right its too early i was thinking valet key. for just getting in home depot should be able to cut a cheap one just to open the door. Im pretty sure dealer is trying to sell him a valet if its $115 cus programming is .5 hour alone

He just wants a key that opens the door, not start the vehicle.

I got such a key made at the nearest Home Depot using an all metal blank.

If you always lock the doors with the buttons on the main key, you will never need the spare.

Will, except this one time I was selling model trains at a show and used the inverter in my 4Runner to power them up; turns out the key can get the inverter in the rear to come on - that way nobody could just hop in my 4Runner and drive it off if I wanted to go to the washroom.

I just had a spare key cut at the local hardware store, I told them I just wanted one for the door locks and they happily cut an all metal key. He did warn me several times that it wouldn't work to start the truck

Hmm, I tested the plain key in the drivers door and rear gate and my truck works just fine. Can you go to a dealer and have them cut you a plain metal key?

Hmm, I tested the plain key in the drivers door and rear gate and my truck works just fine. Can you go to a dealer and have them cut you a plain metal key?

dealer may charge him to cut a dummy key. I know we dont at ours, but it is a case by case basis. If your a twat you are getting charged 5 bucks for the key we paid a penny for and you are getting charged 10 to cut it. being nice can go a long way!!

I would try again at the dealership just go in person and talk to parts. tell them you want a dummy tr-47 cut just to unlock the doors.

My 2013 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition still works with the regular key after attempting to start the vehicle with a plain metal key.

Its BS. Just go some place else to copy the key. They are just CYA.

Weird, so using the dummy key by an accident will not mess anything up. I am going by Homey Depot today.

This came in my owners packet when I bought my T4R. I don't know if it is a Gulf States Toyota thing that they include or if it is in all packets with your owners manual.
Look in your glovebox very well, you may have one!

It was just a blank, I took it to the dealership and they cut it to my key.
It is ONLY for unlocking the door.

Some vehicles will lock you out/set DTCs if the wrong key has been used to start the vehicle too many times. I imagine many ignorant/cheap/idiot customers have done this and so many stores just adopted that policy. Toyota's don't do that as far as I remember, so as long as you remember the key is just for the doors; you should be able to get a key blank cut. IF the key is a smartkey I believe those keys are laser cut and may be tricker to duplicate than simply going to Home Depot.

2nd gen prius are the only ones that have a non laser cut key inside of it. all of the others are laser

I bought a chip key on ebay for $21, had a kid at Pic a Part cut it for $2 and bought Techstream for $26 and programmed it myself. Works fine for under $50. Key only, no lock/unlock buttons.

Later I saw ACE Hardware will make a clone of your key for $69, no programming needed. I`ll bet other hardware or lock shops will do the same.

Too much hassle for a spare key.
