$115 For Spare Key

Thanks everyone. I tried to get one at the local hardware store. They said it's their policy not to cut keys that need to be programmed. They said it's because if you use it to try to start the vehicle it can mess up the programming for the other keys or something...

You guys every heard of that?

I know with some early-mid 2000's Chrysler's you could start the car using a key without a chip but it would only run for 5 seconds. If you did this 3 times in a row it would trigger the anti theft system and needed to be reset at a dealer. Buddy of mine said it happened all the time. I could see them being a little worried because of that.

This came in my owners packet when I bought my T4R. I don't know if it is a Gulf States Toyota thing that they include or if it is in all packets with your owners manual.
Look in your glovebox very well, you may have one!

It was just a blank, I took it to the dealership and they cut it to my key.
It is ONLY for unlocking the door.

I had HD make a back up key out of metal for my Ford Expedition that uses a programed key.

I bought a chip key on ebay for $21, had a kid at Pic a Part cut it for $2 and bought Techstream for $26 and programmed it myself. Works fine for under $50. Key only, no lock/unlock buttons.

Later I saw ACE Hardware will make a clone of your key for $69, no programming needed. I`ll bet other hardware or lock shops will do the same.

Too much hassle for a spare key.

Problem is if you ever lose your keys and need to program new ones, all you have are 1 key ID which means you need to ReSeed the Immobilizer unit which is more costly than simply having the module reprogrammed.

Not sure I understand, is this in reference to a clone key?

I have 2 with lock/unlock buttons and one valet key that came with my T4 from the dealer. That would give me 3 registered keys plus I have a tag that came with one of the original keys.

I stopped by Lowes today. The lady reluctantly made me a key. She said sometimes they original key will be disabled if copied...? She asked someone and they said proceed. The duplicate works for the door. I'm not planning on trying the ignition.

It's something I mention when the conversation of keys comes up. Some people through whatever reason (fate, negligence, ect.) have ended up with a single Master Key. You need at least 2 Master Keys to relearn keys on a Toyota if you're clearing the memory. If you clone your Master Key all you have is 1 Master Key ID. Which means IF you ever had to erase immobilizer memory, you can't do the standard method of relearning (with two master keys) and thus you will end up needing the ECM & Immobilizer "ReSeeded" which is more expensive.
