14" TE guys weird noise

Hi Guys,

First post!

Been lurking for a while which led me to lease a new 4runner Trail Edition here in Toronto, Ontario.

Now, we have a lot of pot holes in our lovely city after a harsh winter. I have noticed a sharp clunk occasionally when turning right? on a particularly bumpy corner?! if sounds/feels like the left driver rear's shock is suddenly missing and the wheel goes loose for a split second.

I'm not sure if this is related cause the truck is generally fantastic but I was something I noticed. My first thought was that it was probably the KDSS kicking in like something detached. I haven't really studied the system. It's standard on the Canadian TE.

Build is 11/13 and about 2500km/1500 miles.

Can't say its repeatable but I'll pay more attention now and will tell the dealer when I take it in. I know though, that my dealer doesn't do a lot of 4runners.

guys dont worry too much the sys is not failing,at least not yet if you had a
catastiphic failure you would absolutly know it.if we get a slow stretch at work today im gonna call our lexus feild engineer and explain what were hearing.

Hey, did you manage to get the engineer out to look at the issue?
 
Yes sorry it took so long.the noise as explained by lexus engineer is normal operation of kdss there have been complaints from customers with t4r's and gx 460's with no abnormal operation found.as for my self I can find no problems with mine just a little noisy.i hit the trails this past Sunday had the 4runner flexed out several times with no problems,although you can hear when the fluid pressure is released.at this point I'm gonna say normal operation.if there is a problem with the sys Toyota will address it in the future I'm sure,until then I'm gonna carry on loving my 4runner.if I hear of any changes I'll be sure to let everyone know.i wish I could have been more help.

thanks for passing on this info....the performance of the trail version is awesome despite the noise.
 
I'm really dissapointed, yet not surprised, to hear that.

The system may be functioning as designed, but manufacturers, especially good ones, put a lot of effort into reducing noise, vibration, and harshness. And I would put this noise into that category. Rattle isn't normal. Not by today's standards.

I use a Ford F-150 at work. It's very dissapointing how solid it feels compared to the Toyota when I go over the same bumps.

I'm going to end up selling this thing because I can't stand a rattle in the suspension.

2/14 build date, so I have the later KDSS system AND have the noise. I don't really mind it unless it becomes a problem.
 
Almost bought a Trail, but had an '03 Sport with XREAS and it leaked. Decided to go vanilla this time with the SR5.

You'd think Toyota would have fixed this, but they keep selling trucks so there is no motivation to fix it correctly.

Same with the throw out bearings in Toyota manual tranny's. My '89 SR5 pickup had bad TOB's and so does my '08 FJ. Seems Toyota just keeps recycling the same trash.

I sold my FJ because of the lack of longevity in the TOB. If this new 4Runner has problems, I am moving away from Toyota products.

FWIW, you can get the TE without KDSS. I just ordered one that way. Not sure why toyota has problems with the TOB though. My 1969 f100 has noisey TOBs though. They start out quiet then get louder. Nature of the beast I guess. Only had one fail on me.

That is sad to hear about all of the TOB and Manual trans issues. You would think the less complex manual transmission would have less issues then an Auto, Maybe Toyota has just forgotten how to make a manual transmission, now that 99% of everything they sell is Auto only... You would also think they would address their driveshaft clunk and crappy frame coating/rust issues....

Just wondering how long the wait is for a TE ordered with No KDSS? I had the dealer look for a TE without KDSS since it says "optional" but the answer I got was that Toyota sends all the TE's to dealerships with KDSS. When I asked about ordering one without it they told me it would be a long wait "5-6 months" and would cost me more than a TE with KDSS since there would be extra shipping and docking fee's. I felt like they just wanted to sell me something that day but I didn't want to wait that long. Curious about the truth.

I seen some without KDSS in stock around here. I test drove a black one about a month ago that didn't have it. I was told the wait for mine could be two months. Hopefully it comes in sooner. As for price, it's cheaper without KDSS. We did find a few 2nd and 3rd choice colors with the options we wanted but shipping from one dealer to my dealer was high. Its actually going to be cheaper to order a 4runner exactly the way I want than it would be to have a 2nd choice color shipped from state to state. The only catch is the wait time. Supposedly, my dealer is watching the inventories to see if one like I ordered comes up so he can divert it this way.

Do you mean Premium Trails? It is hard to find a Premium Trail without KDSS, likewise it is difficult to find a Base Trail with KDSS, but KDSS is definitely an option on both (not standard). This is based on my recent purchasing experience where I wanted a base with KDSS (but couldn't find one with the color/options I wanted). This is also based on the DC area.

I test drove a TE w/o KDSS. This was in SET though, different by region.
 
I can confirm that its nearly impossible to find a TE Premium w/o KDSS as I was looking for ones with and w/o in black and found all with it and none w/o it...country wide! Try Cars.com and it will show you what the country has, coast to coast
 
It must be different across the country then for other states. My dealer said they looked for a standard trail w/out KDSS in CA and it couldn't be found, not one. I didn't have the patience to wait a few months to put one on order.
