it works ok. I can go for maybe 10 mins then I have to stop and let it catch up. the HF compressors are terrible but... as always cheap.

I had the EXACT SAME damage on my 97. I made a "plate" with a captive nut that I installed from the inside of the seat-support-rail (if that's what it's called) when I had the carpet out.

starting frame replace
I finally got a chance to pull the salvage frame I got last winter off the trailer and stripped it all the way down.
found some damage, the captive nut inside the steering rack support is busted off so I will have to grind a hole or something and re-weld that little nut. the front recovery point is also bent... not hard but again will have to bust out the welder/grinder. it's a start. I need a new tank of C25 for the mig machine.

I used my harbor freight birthday bucks to grab another engine stand. who does not need yet another engine stand?
since I need to do some work on this frame and my back hurts most of the time now that I'm 50... I decided this would make it much easier to weld and paint the frame. progress is slow but so am I. I can only rotate it 1/2 way but that should be enough.
also picked up the titanium mig setup... ran some test beads and this is a decent little machine. it's been 15 years since I have welded so I'm pretty rusty at it but these frame welds just need to be strong.

If the nut doesn't rotate freely, it is probably supposed to be 'loose' in there. It allows for some misalignment during assembly. Lots of the captive suspension nuts are this way on Toyotas (and maybe other makes).

Lol, would of been nice to have two engine stands when I had rear axle torn down to housing for cleanup and paint. You have 90 days to take it back, hurry up!
That's wild. Same thing happened to me when I put passenger seat cushions on my driver side rails. I ended up drilling through the floor and using an 1-1/2" long bolt.

the rear of the frame hits the stand support. I picked up some 2"x 2" tube 11 gauge today from garlic steel and will extend the back connection so it will spin around. great horny toads I have not laid down $$ for bulk steel for 10+ years and that stuff is spendy.
after it spins freely I need to add disco lights and it's a party!

no it rotates
you can see where the welds were broken. there would be no way to get the nut into that spot post weld. you would not be able to replace that big stud bolt otherwise.
it's a pain because that is not a spot any normal human could weld. needs to be cut open and then re-tacked into place and then welded back shut. or I could turn the dial way up and burn it out.

I can't say enough good things so far about the cheap-o welder. for not having welded for years and years to pick this thing up and run welds like this is really pretty amazing. welding has come a long ways in the last 15 years.

I can't say enough good things so far about the cheap-o welder. for not having welded for years and years to pick this thing up and run welds like this is really pretty amazing. welding has come a long ways in the last 15 years.

what you're doing with this build is a dying art.
Especially among my generation, but I'm pretty confident there will be a strong push back to the trades in a few years to reverse that a bit.
I'm shopping for a 3rd gen at the moment and hoping it can be smooth introduction to working on vehicles.

it's takes a while to get the hang of it. I just did brakes and fluids for many many years but not really until 3-4 years ago was ready to jump this far into it.
as long as you have the place, time and $ it's very satisfying.

there are 2 captive nuts inside this little tower thingy, sure it has a name. but one of the nuts came lose so I had to cut it open and re-tack the nuts down.

was able to re-locate the nuts based on the tac welds that held them in place. it's a bit scare how skimpy the toyota welds are on these nuts. time to bring some big old american welds to those babies!

shot up 6 cans into the frame and x-members. I think really you would need 8 cans 4 per side to really get a solid good internal coat. also being able to roll the frame around helps get it all covered.
