1st and 4th Cylinder misfire

So...just got my 4th gen. I have been reading through all the mods and decided to replace Air filter and perform HCF delete (2005 4.0).

So in the process while looki g at thaf nasty, dirty engine, i decided to hose it down and shine it up. Used some tire black in spray form to shine it up.

Hell, while i was at it, threw some lucas oil injector cleaner in the tank...why not!?!?

All went well until yesterday when i noticed the engine running a little rough. Figured it was time to change the plugs. Today, totally got worse amd literally had zero power, but was sporadic...check engine light comes on, go have codes pulled, misfire on 1 and 4. Damn...what have i done. Mind you, the truck has NEVER had an engine issue until i started effing with it.

So, i buy a coil pack and replacement plug for 1 and 4, install, test drive, FIXED!!!

Until the engine came up to temprature, and the misfire is back.

So, my question is this: Is it the HCF delete plus air filter (k&n) causing too much air, MAF confused? Or by spraying down the motor with water, then the tire black (on the black plasticky parts, but possible overspray on the coils) foul things up? Or is it the Lucas Oil treatment?

What sucks is my wife drives the 4R since 2005 with zero issues, i have it for 2 days and screw the pooch...

Any ideas? Appreciate the help.

Likely water seeped into the coils. Once the motor gets up to temp water is creating steam and fouling or causing ill conditions for full combustion. At least that's what my mechanic Buddy told me when I did exactly what you did [emoji6]

Interesting. Thanks for the reply. Any idea if thr issue will clear itself up, or is this a coil/plug replacement all around?

Pull the MAF out, make sure it's clean. You installed a surefire way to foul up the MAF with the K&N and lack of the hydrocarbon filter (the majority of seriously fouled/failed MAFs I've seen were from vehicles that happened to run a K&N or oiled style air filter, the dry performance filters still dirtied the MAFs, but no where near as bad as the oiled filters).

What plugs and coil did you install on the vehicle? Additionally did you disconnect the battery at any point? Did you see any damaged wiring and/or damaged sheathing on any of the coil connectors? I regularly hit customer's cars with a pressure washer to clean the engine bay while I'm doing a battery service (honestly it's the easiest way to clean those suckers up...). Our detail department does the same thing to all our used and new vehicles, the modern Toyota coil packs are fairly well insulated from the elements, the connector is the only place water could get in unless they were cracked.

What DTCs did you have that made you buy a new coil pack?

There was no visible damage to any of the coil wiring harnesses, I did inspect those closely. The codes (which I didn't ask for at my local AZ) shows cylinder misfire on 1 and 4. As a temp fix to get around the issue. AZ employee said there system showed that the issue could have been related to coil or bad plug, so I replaced both. I put in the AZ specials - duralast coil and bosch plug. All they had...the truck was nearly un-driveable. I fully intend to go back with Denso.

The battery was disconnected while I was working on and cleaning the engine.

I'll clean out the MAF and see how she runs.

Thanks for the help, it is appreciated.

Change all the plugs to Denso or NGKs (Toyotas don't play well with German parts for some odd reason), clean the MAF, clean the throttle body (with the key off!).

Disconnect the battery for 5~10minutes, reconnect it and let the vehicle idle for about 5minutes with no loads (i.e. no lights, no HVAC, ect). That will let it relearn the idle. I think a combination of the above items has let it get a bit off.

Thank you. I just bought some MAF and TB cleaner. Codes were P0300, 0301, 0304.

I'll report back later in after I clean it up again.

Thanks again

So, cleaned MF and TB, disco'd the battery for about an hour while I worked, put her back together and let her idle for 15 or so while it came up to temp. So far, she seems to be running pretty good. Thanks for the pointers, here are some pics of the TB before and afters

So after driving for a couple of days, the miss returned. [emoji35]

I pulled the MAF and cleaned again, took out the K&N and installed a normal paper filter, and put the HCF back in (temporary fix). Also disconnected the battery for a while, reconnected and let her idle for a while.

Man I really screwed the pooch. Hope she gets right after this last 'repair'.

Thanks

Huh... I'm trying to think what you could have done that would have set the vehicle over the edge like that... Do you have access to a scantool that can get Datalist information?

No sir I do not. I just ordered replacement Densos. The will be here tomorrow. Remember I did dump Lucas injector cleaner in at this same time. The plugs have never been changed (shame on me). I wonder if they got fouled and begin to malfunction when the engine gets hot.

Do you believe I need to replace my coils? Is there any chance of fouling the new plugs with those old coils?

Also, my MAF sensor has the two small wires with a bulb at the bottom. It is dark brown colored even after being cleaned. Is that normal? I am also considering replacing it with the OEM model..

One thing at a time though.

EDIT:. I think I found the answer to the coil question. I will replace the two aftermarket coils with Denso OEM and leave the rest. They should be ok according to the thread I read.

So the 4R has been sitting in the lot at work and has cooled down. Just for kicks, hopped in and took it for a spin to see if the miss would present itself immediately. It didn't - not while below normal operating temp. But sure enough, as soon as the needle hit op temp, the miss reared it's ugly head...

So, last night, I cleaned MAF, replaced K&N, put HCF back in place, replaced two plugs in cyl 1 and 4 along with aftermarket coils. Pulled the battery overnight last night and fired it up this morning about 10 minutes before I left for work.

Nothing I have done has corrected the issue. I am inclined to think that a combination of my old ass plugs along with the Lucas Oil injector cleaner the guy at auto zone talked me into has me in a pickle dick. I wonder if the plugs were hanging on by a thread and the Lucas maybe fouled them? All guesses really....

New Denso's are due to arrive on Thursday along with two new coils to replace the aftermarkets i currently have installed.

After I have all of that installed, and it still misses, I may drive it off a cliff (which might be hard since there aren't any cliff's within several hundred miles of me).

Anyway, pretty pissed about this whole deal.

Thanks for all the help...

Burn off your tank of gas before you put the new plugs in. Just to keep that lucas oil crap away from them. Sorry, I've never been a big fan of additives...

However I'm running into the exact same problems you are and I don't have any additives in my gas.

I also have a fresh set of plugs with less than 500 miles on em. My denso coils get here Thursday I'll let you know if I solve it by then

Oh that's very interesting. 4.0L? Which plugs are you running? Miles? I hope I don't have to replace all of the coil's as well. They are proud of those little bass-terds...

I've got the 4.7L. I'm running Denso Iridiums and I'm up at 317k miles so I'm pretty sure it's bad coils. It's just weird that I threw the Gibson catback on and this issue came up. Another member on here is having an idle issue as well and he just put the catback on. But I have more than the rough idle I'm getting hiccups while I drive too
