2.2 inch pulley Help!!!

So about a month ago I ordered the 2.2 inch pulley from URD to install on my s/c 3rd gen. I just got it installed today, and during the test drive my mechanic said it sounded terrible. He called URD and they said that the ECU has to be flashed and re-tuned.

However, when I called about a month ago URD made me believe that it was a plug and play installation since I already have the URD 7th injector kit as well.

Before I tell my mechanic to take it off, I was hoping someone out there with one of those could help me out—does it require tuning? And if so how does that work? I'm new to tuning.

Likewise if anyone is in the Los Angeles area and does tuning or work on these I would appreciate the hookup.

Thanks in advance!

Call URD right now and have them send you the Map for the 2.2 pulley and have you or your mechanic flash your piggyback with the new map. It is not plug and play since the amount of air and fuel changes you will need to change the tune.

Here is the number they will be able to work you through the flash process as well.

Thank you so much for the fast reply! I can't tell you how helpful this is.

So I just need to put the new map onto the 7th injector unit and that's it? Just want to make sure I know all the details now.

Clearly I should have asked around first. Thanks again!!!

Yep gadget should have the map all setup already so just flash it to the piggyback and you should be set!

Ok, just called Gadget and he said there's only a stock map available.

I have a K&N intake and he said with the way my engine is set up, that could cause it to run lean. He recommended putting the stock airflow on with the elbow removed in the fender.

So, I guess I'll have my mechanic do that? Gaget said if it doesn't fix the issue I'll have to get it custom tuned...

No chance you still have your 2.2 map you could email me or something?

tune....

im needing to do the same thing i believe. i have the 4th gen SC, urd 7th, 2.2 pulley and i feel its a little rich at idle and too lean at throttle. i also still get a little ping at wide open throttle or normal throttle at a steady incline or under load. i do have the "split second" tuning disc my 7th came with and i also purchased the serial to usb cable and now just need to hook all to laptop and figure it out. MTD , have you done this tuning yet with the tuning software?
rarnett91, i did read somewhere also that the k&n coldair or most any cold air setups are not the best to have on our S/C setups.

Im sorry guys i figured Gadget would have you covered... I knew he had different maps for the 2nd gen taco so i fugured he would follow suit on the 3.4l...

I still dont have my 7th kit but i will be custom tuning it by logging anyway...
I would post in the TRD sc thread and see if someone has a custom map you guys could use.

Update

So I know this is kind of dead, but a few months down the road and my 4runner is doing OK, but not great. I'm definitely noticing a strange whining sound coming from the driver's side about halfway down.

So far I've had it in to about 3 different toyota dealerships plus another ex-toyota mechanic at an independent shop and I either can't replicate the noise or can't get them to hear it...

Here's a link to a video I took one day when it was particularly loud. This noise didn't start when I got the pulley, but either by coincidence or not, it's become more frequent since installing it.

If need be, I'll start a new thread on this, but if anyone knows what that could be please let me know. You'll hear the noise I'm talking about about 10 seconds in when I approach the driver's side.

Did you ever get it tuned? Do you have a wideband sensor and the ability to do it yourself? If not, you're probably running lean under any sort of boost. Not a good idea for longevity of the engine.

It's hard to tell over the phone clip, but I didn't hear the ticking noise. However, do you know how old the supercharger front bearings are? They don't last forever. Also, it sound like you've got a hissing noise from under the truck that sounds a lot like an exhaust leak.

Are you running some sort of in-line boost a pump or something, or did you upgrade your OEM fuel pump (like what most URD kits do)?
Also - depending on where your exhaust leak is and how bad it is it can make tuning a real bear.

I agree with some of the other posts - get a wide-band O2 and maybe an EGT sensor to see how the motor is running. So the whining isn't coming from the S/C itself though, correct?

LOL. That's your fuel pump!

I can't believe none of the dealerships or mechanics didn't know. I guess in a dealership you don't see much of aftermarket pumps.

That sound is your fuel pump which I too found mines quite loud. Only those who have a 7th injector kit from URD will be able to spot it or I guess anyone who upgrades their fuel pump.

To replicate its sound or to explain why you only hear is once in a while is that the amount of fuel in your gas tank will make it more noticeable or not.
I notice it most when my fuel is close to empty or at least under quarter tank.

Also tends to be more pronounced when the truck has been driven for a bit with the fuel at quarter tank or below.

It's nothing to worry about and if it bothers you, just have your gas higher than quarter tank. Haha.

Just to make this clear, tuning will not "fix" this sound. It's just a characteristic of the specific walbro pump that comes in the kit.

Update, mo problems

Thanks for the replies! I don't have the O2 wideband yet, but planning on getting it.

I have noticed since reading your replies that the noise does seem to be worse when the fuel is lower, however it makes that noise all the time. Hopefully that's not the pump going bad.

UPDATE: The 4runner actually broke down last weekend in Davis, CA. Engine started shaking violently and it sounded terrible. Toyota dealership there told me it was my spark plugs and a coil, charged me 500 bucks to replace them.

5 minutes driving it off the lot, same lights come on. Took it back and they quoted me 1500 bucks to change the "faulty" knock sensor. I didn't trust their diagnosis, especially since they broke my antenna while in the shop, so I took it to my cousin who has experience working on cars.

After testing the car all day, we couldn't figure out if the car is leaning out and getting knock, or if the sensor is bad. We plugged into the URD kit and (neither of us know a lot about tuning) but it seemed like it was off-- didn't seem like the values were right...
Interestingly, we did notice a vacuum leak that we took care of, but the lights persist. Plus, there's this strange issue where sometimes the car will drive great and get good throttle response, and other times it revs up but goes nowhere and feels like it's towing a trailer. My cousin even noticed the bogginess when he drove it, but couldn't think of what would cause that.

Does anyone know of a tuner or T4R member in the bay area that may be able to help me out? I'm located in San Francisco now and my car has gotten to the point where if I don't figure this out I may have to sell it. I'm a recent college grad and I love this car more than anything, but it's costing me more than my hourly job can pay for at the moment and I'd hate to see it die due to neglect.

My next step is to try to get it tuned right so I can try to eliminate any other issues. I don't know much, but I'm trying to use the forum to learn as much as I can. Any suggestions/leads/tips are welcomed.

When I ordered URD 7th Injector it came pre-loaded with a map for the 2.2 pulley.

Give a shout to paddlenbike ... I think he can probably square you away with a map for your application, and I think you're at similar elevations. I'd give you mine by my laptop is no more, and I don't feel like taking my desktop into the garage =D

Edit** I am not sure if Paddlenbike has the 2.2 now that I think about it... I am sure someone in CA has one though... Maybe a local could chime in?

The bogging down sounds like the timing, lean condition is happening to you.

The computer is trying to figure it's self out and how to make it run properly but cans quite do it.

Let's get local SCrunner in here.

I am still on the stock pulley. Why? I have no idea.

My fuel pump sounds the same way. When the tank is low the sound is so loud it is concerning. If this one ever dies I plan to install a Nippon Denso high volume fuel pump instead.

So does anyone have a spare pulley sitting around? I'm planning on making one in the machine shop because I'm a poor SOB who doesn't want to spend $90 on a piece of aluminum

I sent a PM to OP, but figured I'd chime in here as well. I do have the 7th and 2.2, but the 2.2 isn't installed right now. I also haven't had a chance to tune yet. I ordered the adapter and will be arriving tomorrow. Once it does I will do a test run and post my numbers.

Might have you covered, I'll try to remove it tonight and send you a PM.

Do you think a pulley would withstand being made by uhmwpe? Or should it be aluminum?

I would think you would want it to be as light and strong as possible to avoid rotational impedance so that might be a good match. Too much weight/impedance might cause the belt to slip instead of turning the rotors, but uhmwpe might not put up with the hot/cold of the engine bay as well.

I've got a OEM pulley if you need it.

Just found this: "according to DSM, it is not advisable to use UHMWPE fibers at temperatures exceeding 80 to 100 °C (176 to 212 °F) for long periods of time"
