2.7L 4runner -anybody seen one?

LOL!

I'm sure that picture shows a manual tranny. I did't realize they offered that.

Thats an automatic. They just removed the trim and added a cheap pleather boot. I think the zig zag type shift pattern our 4r doesn't apply to the transmission the 4cyl used and it just slides back and forth so thats prob the reason for this look and cost.

There are quite a few 4cyl. 2010's here in Guam. Most people get them here for the price.

Me personally, I can't even imagine how a 2.7L, 4cyl, 170 hp. engine lug this 2 ton beast around.

A V6 is definitely the way to go with this car.

I just bought a 99 with the 2.7 4... it runs great and I am getting 24 mpg. It is a bit underpowered, but it ran 75 on a highway trip with no problems. From what I have read, it is one of the most dependable motors Toyota has ever made.
Not gonna beat anyone off the line, but if I wanted to do that, why would I buy an suv???

If you're in the market for a 4cyl, take a look at the Rav4. My girlfriend has a base model Rav4 (WAY cheaper than a 4Runner) and it runs like a champ. Good power, great handling, good road feel, makes the 4Runnner feel like a land-yacht.

Its definietely more of a car, whereas the 4Runner is a truck, and you won't have the creature comforts or the cargo space of the T4R.

Just a thought.

4 banger is better!

all you guys are quacks. i own a 97 2.7l. got it 5 years ago from my aunt. the car has 380xxxkm on it and it runs ****ing PERFECT. i wrench everything myself. i dont trust ANYONE. my wife drives a 97 v6. ya its "faster" but hers always costs more than mine. and its just junk. horrible motor. my small 4 banger is so ****ing easy to work on, so simple. i go wheeling ALL the time with it. e locker. my wifes doesnt have a diff lock so as soon as she flexs she stops. when i flex, i keep going. i dont need 250+ horsepower to wheel, i do fine if not better with my 120. ive blown away big fancy v8 jeeps with all the "goods" its not fast, but it doesnt under deliver. so to heck with you guys who dont like a "v4" as my mother-in-law called it

Well, I thought it was a very lovely story, and you tell it so well, with such enthusiasm.

They should never have offered the 2.7L for the 5th gen. Even the Tacoma is different in the 2.7L offering. (different axles, slightly different suspension, wheels, panels, ect.)

The 3rd gen 4Runner weighs something like 3800lbs, while a 5th gen tops out around 4800. That's a half ton more weight, the 4cyl was a great option up until the 3rd gen, after that the 4th gen gained a bit too much weight to make it useful, they didn't even bother offering it for the 4th gen.

What's with the defense of an engine based on its performance in a different vehicle? Apples to oranges...

I have a great 500cc Briggs and Stratton motor on my riding mower. It only puts out about 14.5hp, but that has never slowed me down... it's got plenty of power and you really should hear the deep throaty noise. Toyota really should've considered adding it to the 4Runner.

They offered the 2.7L in a completely stripped down only 2WD 4Runner 2010 model and it had a 4SP A340E tranny with 4:56 gears and weighed considerably less and probably around 4000 lbs if I were to guess.

As stated the 2.7L in all the versions are famous for being a very long lasting dependable workhorse little motor. A good friend of mine had the 3RZ 2.7L in his 96 Taco(bought new) that had 380k miles on it when he pulled it as he thought the main bearings were bad. When he tore it down it was only the counter rotating balance shaft's bearings and not the mains as they were fine.He could have just changed those bearings and it would have ran great but replaced it with another 3RZ that he had saved from a wrecked one with only 15k miles and now has 100k miles on that engine. His Taco would probably wheel circles around me with almost 500k miles on it and it's still his daily driver!lol

Great post ConstantFix!!
Some 3RZ's built are pushing 1000hp.......Toyota 3RZ, how good are they!!
Never underestimate those little Toyota 4 bangers!

My dad's 98 Tacoma has the 2.7L. I took it offroading this summer and it was a fun little truck to beat on. I didn't worry about ruining the paint or crushing anything underneath because he paid $750 for it. He probably drives that little thing more than his '11 Tacoma V6 TRD offroad.
