Dealers make out on the holdback, something like a 4runner, 4-6 hundred dollars. less for cheaper cars, and not much more for more pricey ones.
Little do people know, but there is two invoices each dealer has for each car. one with all associated costs, one without.
Real money is in service, parts, especially service.
Like other posts said, they do and can make money off of certain internal promos, but honestly I know first hand everymonth what promos are running, and almost always it never includes the 4runner. Camry, camry, camry. or the sienna, they are the ones where there is spiffs for selling a certain number, or for each one, or for whatever. But, you cannot expect the dealer to give you that spiff money, tuff luck, thats a spiff for them to get you in a car, direct from Toyota. This is usually a minute amount, a hundred each camry sold or something, not like its a 5k kickback for each unit sold.
I like to get a good deal on cars too, we all do. But its funny how people will dicker for a car to death, but buy a house for a stalemate price, buy that big screen tv at Circuit City for whatever is listed and so on. But damn, go buy that new car and watch out, they will want it for nothing. Not saying you do daveman, just saying how most feel.
Most people either understand they are getting a way better product by purchasing a toyota, and dicker on price a bit. They end up purchasing and enjoying their vehicle for a long time. Others want a Tundra for Chevy 1500 price, and do not understand why Toyota is more money? So they get mad, and buy that Chevy, and spend time disgruntled at toyota while at the dealer getting it fixed every other day. Or, when they trade the ole trusty Chevy in on that Tundra 3 years from now, they do not understand why they are so upside down on it and its not worth anything.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Best of luck to you. both cars are superb, you will love them.
