2" Lift on 3rd Gen?

Speedy's 2" Lift on 3rd Gen A to Z with Install Video

Ok before you guys whip out the flame throwers please know I have searched and searched and searched some more. Mphudak from here as been a really big help as well.

I've got a 2002 4Runner that is needing new tires. The originals have lasted 11 years and 95,000 miles and they're pretty well shot.

I plan to do Bridgestone Revo 2 tires in a 265/75R16 size on some Level 8 MK6 wheels in a 16x8. I currently have Ivan Stewart TRD Wheels that I'll be swapping out just for something different.

I saw Mphudak's 4Runner while searching wheels and love it. He has the OME 881 fr and 906 rear setup for exactly 2" of lift. He took some measurements for me and from the center of the wheel hub to the edge of the fender was 22" all around where mind is 19.5 - 20" on the same measure.

I've played with the jack out in the garage moving the truck around to see how it looks at various lift heights and 2" is about the max I really want.

The dilemma, as I'm sure most of you know, is lift options for these things are all over the place. I have literally spent over a week reading up on what's what and STILL have a few questions. :rtfm:

So for a basic 2" lift for a 4Runner that rarely if ever sees any off road time, is there a go to setup? The 881/906 seems to be about the only 2" I can find outside of spacers which I'd prefer to avoid. My only concern is a harsh ride. I had a 6" lift on a Tacoma a few years ago and it rode like crap so I wanna be careful here.

I've talked to Toytec as well as Sonaran Steel. Steve's 7.2 raises the truck more than I'd like, but he assures me the ride is fantastic. I just think 3" with 265/75 tires looks a bit off. That extra inch of height just puts it over for me.

I've considered just doing some 1999 Tall springs, but those things have gotten really expensive and by the time I do those and some shocks I coulda just bought a OME setup and saved some bucks, or spent another $200 and had the 7.2, only it's too tall.

So, after all that back to my basic question: Is there a go to lift for 2" that rides good on the street? Is the 881/906 the way (only way) to go? If it is the 881/906 would you go ahead and do the Bilstein 5100 series shocks while it's torn down?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the newb question. I'm very skilled at internet searches and forum searches but this one got the best of me.

Tundra coils /5100s

on the lowest perch combined with the 906s/60028s in back with 10mm trim spacers will get you right around 2" up & 2.5"s in back. This is what im using and really like it.

I had the 906s with TRDs up front (similar to 881s) and the ride was great. I got just t 2" all around. I think you'd be happy with it.

Thanks for the info, that gives me a better feeling about the ride quality.

So which Tundra coil should I be looking at? The TRD one? If so isn't that the same on in the 7.2 kit? Or is Steve possibly setting them on a higher perch to get the full 3" of lift?

Also, I'd like to use 5100 series shocks all the way around for a matched setup. I'm guessing most folks use the 5125s in the rear with the 906 spring? Are they using the shock eye adapter from Toytec to make them work?

I've not priced Tundra coils as of yet so if there is a part number for these I'd appreciate it so I can start looking. I'd prefer to stick with Toyota parts where possible. This was in the lift FAQ, is this the correct parts you guys are referring to?

The TRD Tundra Spring

The front spring and shock from the 2000-06 Tundra TRD can be used to lift the front of the 4Runner. The part numbers and color codes are:

Driver side - 48131-AF100 Yellow/Yellow
Passenger side - 48131-AF090 Yellow/Blue

JRM, do you have any side profile shots of your rig?

I did some searching and found a pair of the Tundra TRD Coils at a local salvage yard with the YY and YB markings. We pulled them off the truck and the guy wanted $75 a piece for them. I offered $100 for both and said I didn't need the shocks but he wouldn't do it. They had 112K on them and were from a 2001 model so I thought $150 was a bit high considering I found them new online for about $140 each.

I'm gonna check one more yard on Monday that show some. Do you guys agree that the springs are OK with 100K on them?

If that doesn't work out I'll give Steve from Sonoran a call and see if he'll do me a special package with the springs, shocks, and OME 906s. He doesn't show a package with that on his site.

You should have bought those... You can't touch the TRD coils New for less than $130 a side...

I guess to me it's worth $110 more to have brand new ones if I have to. If I can't get the used ones for $100 to me it's too expensive. I've got two more places to check and if they fall through, new ones it is.

Ordered my tires and wheels today.

Ive had both the

881s and the TRD coils and i think the TRD coils ride better YMMV. Maybe b/c theyre a progressive spring rate and the 881s are straight spring rate. In my case it was worth it to buy the TRDs new. Sort of a side shot...

Thanks, looks good. I got one more yard to check for the springs, if it falls through new it is.

Snagged my 231mm 13WL calipers off a 2003 Sequoia at the local yard today. They were in excellent condition with zero rust. Now to paint them up and get them ready for install with a rebuild kit. $35 per caliper was a good price I felt.

Ok I wanted to swing back around to this. I got my new tires and wheels installed and with with Level 8 MK6s in Grey Metallic with 265/75R16 Revo 2s. Love the setup. For some reason I'm getting just a bit of rubbing on the driver side rear fender well, but not passenger. Guess build tolerances or something.

Anyway, I contacted Sonoran Steel to see if he'd put together a 2" lift kit for me with the Tundra TRD Coils and 5100s in front and 906s and 5100s in the rear and he just e-mailed me back and said all he offers is the 7.2.

Are there any other vendors I should look to for the full setup or just start piecing it together from the dealer and others?

I'm assuming theses are the Tundra springs I need?

Left Coil Part Number: 48131-AF100
Right Coil Part Number: 48131-AF090

I found these online from a Toyota Dealer for $124 per spring but would rather support a vendor here if you guys know of one.

I see Wheeler's now has these rear 5100s that look to be setup specifically for the 3rd Gen 4Runner:

I also am looking at doing a 2in lift in the spring and was wondering why you aren't looking at the Toytec Boss or ultimate lift kit?
I was looking at the Silver coils for the front (550lb) and the OME 906 for the back.
I figured that way I could adjust the fronts to 2in since the 906s are 2 in.
does anyone see this as a problem? Like the front would then be to stiff?

From all my research, the best ride is obtained with the Tundra TRD coils and 5100s. That's why I'm going with them, plus they are factory parts so I know they'll be around in the future should I need them.

Sorry forgot to ask: so you have been running 265/75 R16s on stock suspension up to now is that correct? I need to replace my tires before I lift and wanted to go with the bigger tires until I can afford the lift next year.

You need to do a bit more research to understand this setup. The Bilstein 5100 shocks have 5 perches on them that the springs can be set on. These can give 2-3.5" of lift depending on which perch you use. The lowest, I think, is about 2".

I just got 265/75R16 tires installed last weekend on Level 8 MK6 wheels which are 8" wheels with 4.5 BS and -0 offset. I get some slight rubbing on the back driver side corner of the fender liner, but only on the driver side. I wouldn't wanna live with it for a year. Mine's an 02 model which I believe was one of the lowest so YMMV.

this is my truck. look at my sig to see what i am running on it. the stance looks great and it rides great too.

^^ Now that is an option I had not considered, using the stock coils on some 5100 shocks.

When you say "4th groove" are you counting from the bottom up or the top down? Top down I'm assuming.

Any chance you could take a measurement from the center of your wheel to the edge of the fender?

bottom up; that way it extends the strut. if i remember, the back is at 22", front about 21". it looks level in the photo but that is my friend's driveway and it drops towards the street. i thought it was level until i saw it parked on a more flat surface.

Cool, thanks for the info man.

Did you use the stock top plate and coil isolator or did you go with Tundra parts?
