20 inch wheels on LIMITED

Has anyone here heard of a Limited running 275/55R20's having any issues? I read the entire thread and did not see any.

Is it difficult to find a place that will install the larger size?

I want to replace the 245/60's with 275/55's so many more options. Would only do it if its "safe" to do.

I'm running them on my Limited. It's "safe" but you'll have to remove the front mud guards and on full lock you'll rub against the plastic wheel well. Use a heat gun or Dremel to melt/drill out some of the plastic. Or just get a mild 1.25" lift?

If your main concern is safety, i dont believe any tire manufacturers recommend that width for the 7" stock wheel. However there are plenty of guys here running them without issue.

If you are looking for a shop to install them, I think you're better off buying them online and taking them to a shop that is unaffiliated with that manufacturer. For example, buy BFG KO2s from Discount Tire and take them to something like a Firestone or local shop to get them on. Some shops get a little uptight (probably for contractual reasons) when they are affiliated with the manufacturer and you're trying to buy something against their specs.

I've been running Michelin LTX MS2, 275/55R20, on my 2014 Limited for three years. No rubbing ever, and have not yet succumbed to the horrific fiery death crash, or any other issue for that matter, that many predicted would happen by putting a nominally wider tire on a stock rim.

Might be a Typo for the 20 inch rims. I did a google search and can't find anything anywhere saying that they are 7.5 now.

Finally got my wheels after 9 months of looking on this forum. Thought I would share as this forum has been a great resource for tires and wheels.

These are the Black Rhino Traverse 20" x 9" with a 15 offset. The tires are the new Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 size 275/55R20. Not that aggressive looking as I do a lot of street driving, but All-Terrain and All-Weather nevertheless. They almost sit flush to the fender. A much better aggressive stance than the stock 20" x 7".

I'm very happy with the setup, and a huge improvement with the drive and handling. They slightest rub when the wheel is cranked on a slight slope, and I haven't seen a difference in fuel economy though I would expect it as they are a wider tire with likely more grip/friction.

Think I got it all covered. Thanks to all who contribute. Here are some photos. (It was a very dark day, and I'm lazy to re-take them).

Perusing older posts - but anyone running 20x9 with -12 offset and a spacer lift... what size tires did you get away with?

FYI I'm sharing to add to the collection of knowledge and experience with going bigger on the stock 20" wheels...

Just put 275/55r20 on my '13 Limited stock rims. Continental CrossContact LX20 as a few others have. Tire shop seemed willing to put whatever tires that I wanted. Maybe that would have changed at install time. In any case, they seem great so far and definitely improve the look. Looks "normal" now. Ride quality is marginally improved and noise is same or quieter than previous Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza plus at 245/60. Snow traction this past weekend was good to great for all-season tires. Overall I'm pleased with the change.

Here are my Cooper Discoverer 275/55/R20s on Black Rhino Sidewinder wheels. Rubbing on full lock. Removed front mud flaps from Limited. Had to use a heat gun and drill to open up the wheel well plastic to reduce rubbing. Love the look and worth the extra inconvenience.

I've been running the 275/55 R20 for four years now... NO SPACERS, NO LIFT, AND NO RUBBING ISSUES and the truck runs superbly!

The tire on the left is the stock Yokahama Geolander 245/60 R20; air pres. = 35 psi. The tire on the right is the Good*Year Eagle LS-2: 275/55 R20 to be installed (not yet on rims); check the difference in size even BEFORE mounting!

I installed my Gd*Yr Eagle LS-2's on stock 20" rims four yrs ago without issue; not even with liner rubbing ("PTL")! 'Best to you'!

I put 285-55-20 on my wheels on my Tacoma back in March of 2012. After i bought the 4runner in December of 2012 i lifted the front in mid January 2013 and put a set of 285-55-20 BFgoody AT on it as well. My wife drives more than me and wore her set of BFgoodys out so i replaced her BFGoodys in January 2015 with a set of 305-50-20 General AT2 since BFgoodrich changed to the new AT design i didnt like them and i switched tires. Now i run a 305-50-20 General AT2 on my truck as well since i finally wore out the BFgoodys on my tacoma.

the 305-50-20 Generals ride WAY better than the BFGoody and i dont have to rebalance them every few months. i havent touched the set of 305-50-20s on my wifes 4runner, havent had to rebalance them or anything. they have been running flawlessly for almost 50,000 miles and have plenty of tread.

we both have been way wider and bigger than the OEM says you can and almost every tire shop in the world says you can. and we havent blown a wheel like we were told it would. i have about 80,000 miles on my truck with the stock limited wheels, wore out a set of 285 BFgoodys and then replaced with the wider 305 Generals and have about 15,000 on the generals on my truck. my wifes 4runner went about 65,000 on the BFgoodys and she has about 50-55,000 on the generals now. not a care in the world just smooth riding.

here at the General 305-50-20 on both of our vehicles. they ride great, last a long time, and look good. running 26psi in front on 4runner and 24 in the rear. the tires lay flat on the ground and wear evenly. sidewall temps are low even on hot days running thru the desert i think the highest i have seen was 130 degrees in arizona last summer when it was 115. sidewall temps are typically 110ish.

New 2017 4R Limited has the same 20 x 7 J wheels fyi. Saw some press about a 7.5 inch wide wheel for 2017. No dice. Confirmed on my 1 day old 2017 limited.

For anyone searching, I contacted BFG to confirm the correct pressure for the 4R running KO2s in 275 55 20. I was told 45 psi is the correct pressure.

Feels less risky than 275, and the 265/60r20 (32.5) is taller than 275/55r20 (31.9)

Disappointed in snow performance

Hello,

I've been reading up on the 20" wheel tire selection issue for some time. I've had my 2012 4Runner LE for 4.5 years. I have always been less than pleased in how it performs in the snow. I had the stock duellers, then changed last year to the alenzas. Still, it slides when I take a corner in snow, or step on the gas a bit. I've never felt comfortable switching lanes on a highway and going through the snow between lanes. I had a subaru outback and legacy for 10 years, both w/ all season tires and always felt comfortable and safe. Our second car now is an audi allroad and I drove through a blizzard last week on the eagle ls all season and felt totally in control at all times.
I've gone to Toyota to make sure I have the right 4wd setting on and am banging my head against a wall.
Is it solely the skinny width of the tires required on these wheels or am I missing something? I know snow tires will do better, but I don't understand why my 4runner sucks so bad in the snow.
Any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.

I have a 2014 LE and have around 35k miles on the OEM tires. I had a puncture a few weeks ago that couldn't be patched due to location of the puncture and was hoping I could just replace that tire. I was very surprised to see the condition of the OEM Yoko tires. Even though there was still sufficient tread left, the sipes were quite worn out and it then made sense to me why driving through this winter has felt so unsafe. These tires have practically no grip left in snow anymore. So I am not looking at replacing all the wheels and tires. I am still undecided whether to go with TRD 17" and 265/70R17 BFG KO2 or some aftermarket 20" wheel with 275/55R20 tire as many have gone through here. I am not looking to do any lifts at this time and not doing any offroading other than some dirt roads. I am also thinking of keeping the existing wheels and put on winter tires next year. Anyone can help me decide between the 17 and 20" wheel. I have gone through most of the posts regarding the tires/wheels and not clear whether there is any strong benefit/drawback between the two wheel sizes other than maybe cosmetic?
