20 inch wheels on LIMITED

I'm curious if anyone has experienced hydroplaning with the OEM Yokohama Geolanders?

My truck is 4WD and only has about 3k miles on it, and it has now hydroplaned for the second time this morning, going about 30mph through a puddle that was only on the driver's side. Felt the loss of traction and a slight skid.

The first time, I was turning left and coming to a stop at the same time, also about 25-30mph, and while I was on the brakes, the truck just started skidding.

I am upgrading to smaller wheels and 265/70R17 BFG KO2s later this month, but so far, these Yokohamas seem like garbage tires.

Hydroplaning is relative to tire pressure (and other things you have less control over).

Long answer:
Hydroplaning speed = 10.35 x square root sign inflation pressure

Under this assumption of water depth exceeding the capability of the tread design to remove water:

At 30 psi, hydroplaning could occur at 56.7 mph

At 25 psi, hydroplaning could occur at 51.8 mph

At 20 psi, hydroplaning could occur at 46.3 mph.

This is presented to show the relative effect of inflation pressure on the possibility of hydroplaning.

I've actually been really impressed with the Yoko Geolanders. I can't recall ever hydroplaning with them. The dunlops on my 4th gen on the other hand....they would hydroplane pretty much every time it rained. Worst tire ever.

Alternately, do you think you're feeling the VSC, or is this certainly hydroplaning?

This morning could have been the slight shudder activating the VSC, but nothing lit up on the dash.

The first time was certainly hydroplaning... wheels were locked and the truck skidded a solid 3-4 feet.

I recently checked the tire pressure and all were at spec.

I've owned and driven Toyota 4x4s for a long time, and just never had new tires skid around like this.

Hey guys, Yes I have read thru this thread. Yes i may have missed it, yes i googled it, and no i haven't figured out an answer.. Sorry in advance... I had every intent on lifting and going smaller in wheel size with an all terrain tire but for my job that is not practical now.

I have a 2014 LE stock suspension with the factory 20" wheel on Pirelli Scorpion ATR 275/55/20. 30k + miles on the tires and they have been great and have plenty of tread left. I want to replace the factory 20' wheel with a something different but keep the tire.

The wheel i have found is a 6x139.7
20" x 8.5" with +30mm offset, 106.1 hub bore

The factory wheel is 20"x7 with +15mm offset and 106.1 hub bore. (unless i am wrong)

My question is with the +30mm offset and the 275/55/20 tire. Per the calculator on wheel-size.com it is telling me this Tire is 15 mm closer to suspension components. Rim is 34 mm closer to suspension components. and Rim offset is more than OE, so brake support will be closer to the rim. Make sure they are not touching.

The offset seems high but being the wheel is 1.5" wider than stock i don't know if it will rub or not.... I cant find anyone on here that is running a 20" rim with an offset that high on a factory suspension...

Any ideas?

Get underneath and look. Turn the wheel full lock in each direction. If you have more than a little over a half inch of clearance it won't rub. Make sure to look up as well to make sure it won't rub the liner or anything else.

I see quite a few people running 275/55 20 tires. Are any of you doing off roading with these tires and how do they perform?

I'm considering a set of KO2's in this size to get off road from time to time. Just not sure how the thin sidewall will perform this task.

Just wanted to follow up on this thread as I ditched my 20" Limited wheels over the weekend and went to a new setup:

- First gen Tundra/Sequoia 17 x 7.5" wheels
- BFG KO2s in 265/70R 17

Biggest change for me is that the truck feels much more surefooted across the board. The OEM limited wheels and tires always felt like they were fighting back and not doing a great job of supporting the weight transfer of a 4,600lb SUV. We jokingly call them wagon wheels, but that's really how they felt to me.

This new setup is much more surefooted, much more stable - the 4R doesn't wallow as much, it's easier to steer and just feels more solid. Very happy with it.

I assume that even on the 20" wheels, those of you who have gone to 265+ tires might feel the same.

Usually, the lower profile 20" should provide less roll and wallow from sidewall. Must be the heavy sidewall on the BFG that gives the better feel. Guessing under very extreme cornering the 20" may be better.

I really your combination, it compliments the Limited very well! In my opinion its the best look of 17" wheels on a Limited with it's boxy front and rear ends and lower rocker panel. It has a good balanced stance/look, better than any other 17" wheels I've seen on a Limited.

I have the TRD Pro black wheels on my Limited and to me it doesn't look right with the boxy styling. One of the reasons I'm going to swap the bumper covers to the SR5/Trail, but mainly I don't like the box look of the Limited.

Do you have any more pics of your set up? I am debating whether to keep my 20" and just some get bigger tires or just go with the TRD wheels 17" and the Nitto Grapplers.

ive been asking all over this forum, and still no answers. can the 20 inch rims on the limited handle 275/55 profile tires? Anyone know how wide they are. (most of the toyota rims are 7.5 inches wide i believe, and I ? if that would accomodate 275 wide tires). thanks

To answer your question. This is my 2013 limited with 275 55 20. Just had mounted yesterday. No lift and no rubbing. Tire kingdom sold them and mounted them for me. I was out the door for 678 bucks. Way more cost effective than the 245 60 20....... Toyota really made a mistake by making these wheels only 7 inches. Technically they are out of spec but a 1/4 of an inch on each side doesn't bother me. I hope this post helps people save a lot of $$$$$$$$!!!!!! The truck looks more aggressive too! This is the size that should have been on these limited 4runners.

I'm coming up on a week with new Falken Wildpeak AT3W 275/55/20 and enjoying them so far. These replaced Cooper Discoverer AT3's 275/55/20.

Did you notice the ride quality improved? Coming from a 2012 4 runner sr5 and my 2017 limited bounces down the road. pretty annoying. Wanted to go bigger but keep the rims.
