Yea i agree i would say the 3rd/2nd are even for me

The 5th gens look pretty good overall, although there are some things that I would want to be changed on it, but my favorite body style is definitely the 3rd gen!!!

The 5th loses the whole styling concept of the 4Runner and sells out to a bast@rdized FJ Cruiser/Mitsubishi Montero combination. The 4Runner used to be a good looking SUV. Now it's all weird angular body lines that don't flow well together, with headlights and taillights that look like they were tacked on afterthoughts.

I like the 1st Generation best followed by the 3rd with a soft spot for the 2nd.
1st Generations are cool because of the removal top and they just look so cool and rugged. With the 4 cyl they run forever as well. Right now I am passively looking for a 1st generation 4Runner that is in good shape, mostly original and for a good price. They are getting harder to find but are out there. I say passively because I have yet to talk to the wife about it...eek ;-)
3rd generation is nice because of the creature comforts and it still rugged enough to get the job done. The V6's are proving to be pretty solid as well.
Its really not on my list to ever own but the 2nd Generations are nice and solid with a nice body style that will stand the test of time. For the record when Toyota removed the convertible option for the 2nd's I did not like them at first but as time went on (and learned how big of a PITA the removable top can be) the style grew on me.
4th generations are the greatest in creature comforts but a bit to much of a soccer mom's car in style for my taste although I know they can be built to be great off road. Really when it comes to every day use the 4th generation is best and I may own one of these days but for now its not a priority.
As for the 5th Generation it looks nice. Seems to keep many of the creature comforts that exist in the 4th Generation and regaining some of its off road capabilities and utilitarian look. With the natural flow of progression it will likely be the best 4Runner yet. However I will have to reserve judgment until I see it up close and in person. Really the biggest problem with the 5th Generation for me will be price. It will be out of my league for the 1st 8 to 10 years. So I tend to be a generation behind or 2 behind the times.
This is all just my opinion but thought I would share.

5th gen looks terrible they put a sequoia with a highlander with a dash of rav4 always hated the lights on the fjs that stick out off the body also with the pink in the tail lights(fj) dose not work for me. looks like a 09 trail edition is headed my way. just my 2cents. on the plus side glad they made it more off road worthy. to bad they are closing down trails left and right.

i like it in this order 3rd, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 5th those 1st gens are classic and especially the 84'- 85' solid axle and i ranked the 5th gen last but they all look good. its just that some look a little better in my opinion

unforunatly none had a 6 speed
. Toyota should have some market reseachers on this board so THEY WILL REALIZE WE WANT THE 3.0TD AND ANOTHER F-ING MANUAL TRANSMISSION.Toyota, along with most (all?) other manufacturers, follow the same pattern. They introduce a new vehicle, improve it's looks for a generation or two, then start making it uglier and looking more like the competition. Why is that? 4Runer peaked at 3rd gen then started downhill with the 4th gen. 5th gen continues the downward slide. Rav4 is another example of this. 1st gen Rav4 was a cool little car then they turned it into a big ugly POS. MR2, same thing. I could go on...

I think it's a world better than the 4th gen. I wish they would have dropped that lame wind deflector design they brought over from the 4th gen. It makes it awkward to put canones, kayaks, anything else on the roof from the rear. Plus it looks like s**t.
I think you can give up hope of Toyota adding a MT on it. There's no demand for them. Car manufacturers can't drop them quick enough these days. I can't even think of a SUV that offers one them these days besides Jeep wrangler. Plus truck MTs are lame anyway. Long throws + small shift gates = no fun. Cars are a different story...I would have never bought by '05 TL with AT.
