why it looks cheep

it looks cheep because of the cheep grey plastic accents, a similar mistake toyota made with the 4th generation Sport when it came out in 03. Also, no Black painted rear view mirrors? the front bumper needs to be painted black to match the body not plastic unfinished.

To each his own.. but I could not disagree with you more.

The appeal of the Trail edition (for me anyway) is the rugged, non glossy look on the front bumper, wheel wells etc. I prefer those flat grey plastics, less paint chips, etc.

I like it.

I'm not liking the whole "part time" 4WD thing. That is a disapointment even on my current 4runner Sport.

No it is not Full-time on my Sport V6.

It has 2W, 4WH, 4WL.

Coming from a Land Rover, I thought it was odd my 4runner used a Part-time system. I much prefer 4W always on.

Uh-oh, someone has not read the Owner's Manual!!

Your 2007 V6 4runner can run on 4H all day long on any surface. Or you can run on 2wd if you want to save some fuel. Your choice. You can also run 4LOW on any surface too. Why? It has a Torsen center differential. When you're in 4H, you have full-time 4wd...just like the V8 4runner (and Land Rovers). The V6 powertrain adds an extra flexibility by allowing you to go into 2wd mode. But, yeah, you can run 4wh all day long if you want to (as long as your center diff remains unlocked). Your 4runner's 4wd system is probably one of the best on the planet, far more flexible than your old Land Rovers!! :)

Well the way people are whining about price they probably are a better choice since Toyota would probably add another grand on the price. Like Thai said most owners would opt for their preferences and it's a smart decision for Toyota to not add pricey tires.

It is a multimode system, with one mode being fulltime. You can leave it in 4 high all the time. That's why you have a Torsen limited slip center differential.

That's what I thought until I read some recent post here..... guess I got confused.

Cheap call on Toyota's part. The vast majority of 4Rs end up being used as mall crawlers and the OEM brand of tire could mean less to the owners. Most owners will never change their tires until they wear out and probably couldn't even tell you the brand of tire on their 4R without looking. The least Toyota could have done was put a good tire on for these people; it doesn't have to be expensive to be good. Toyota and Honda are both renowned for putting garbage OEM tires on their vehicles unless you buy the top of the line.

Yours is not a part-time system -- it is better termed a multi-mode system. Yours is like the 4th gen V8 full-time 4WD, except that you have the added mode of 2WD high. You've got the locking center diff, so you can run it on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive high. Just leave the center diff unlocked when you do so.

In contrast, the 5th gen SR5 and TE do not have a center diff, so they should not be driven in 4WD on dry pavement.

Ahhh..... this is my concern about the TE....

(and yes, my 07 Sport does have Torsen Locking Center Differential)

I agree. When you're Toyota and asking $35K for an SUV meant for off-road use, you would think to splurge the extra $500 for some decent AT tires from the factory. At least on the TE model. They're pinching pennies on the stuff that actually matters. Overall, the TE looks bad ass and I will definitely be driving a 5th gen TE when my 4th gen Sport dies.
 
I swung by the local Toyota regional office today to see if they had any TE's (they only had Limited's the other day) and they had a silver one on the lot. It had the Nav and KDSS, as well as remote start, floor mats w/ cargo mat, and wheel locks. Sticker was $41,484.

Impressions:
- smaller bumpers and less cladding is much better than the Limited. could/should go even smaller with the middle section of the front bumper/grille. rear bumper deck could still be a little shorter so it doesn't stick out so much.
- screams for more aggressive tires.
- needs some rocker protection (maybe like JK Rubicon) or at least some tube steps. this is needed for protection and looks. some Shrockworks sliders would look awesome.
- still not digging the FJ head and tail lights, but the slightly smoked lenses are nicer than the clear
- center console lid needs to be dark grey/black, the light grey looks hideous
