whats up fellas??? so i went to get an oil change and the dealer told me that my right front CV boot had a tear and that eventually i needed to get it fixed...now 2 weeks later i went to a different dealer and they are telling me i need an axle replacement....for real??? 970 bucks??? what are your thoughts on just replacing the cv boot and having them regrease and clean out the cv joint vs. having to replace the axle?? it is 200 dollars vs 970... i hear no "clicking" or strange sounds from the front end at all....not a happy camper at all...thanks for all of your help!

If it was torn not too long ago, then you can just replace the boot. If not, then replacing the axle is better. Its easier to just replace the axle, probably why the dealer wanted to do that instead.

Can I just ask, how could that happen early on?
You can't have more than 40k miles on the car.. Maybe you do :)

Also, your car should be covered under factory warranty no?

I have no idea how it happened..i have 48000 miles on her....im in sales, meaning lots of windshield time!

If it is that huge of a price difference and you do not hear any of that "tell tale" clicking noise when that constant velocity joint is under stress while turning then I would think it would be fine to clean, re-grease and replace the boot if possible. I wouldn't wait too long with this though.

it is amazing what a few phone calls can turn up!!! found a 2010 limited totaled by hail damage..got the axle for 90 bucks!!!! ends up being cheaper to replace the axle with the one i found then to replace the cv boot...Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Wow....that junk yard find is some good luck for sure!

Replacing the axle is usually recommended after a split/torn boot since there is no way to tell if the joint has been contaminated with dirt or debris or had a loss of grease.

Since the axle has to be removed to replace the boot anyways, most shops will push for a new axle....which IMO is wise. Problem is, you were at the stealership!

I tore the CV boot twice on my old Tundra and my local mechanic replaced the boot and axle each time for around 250 bucks.

Doubt a torn CV boot would be covered by warranty.

You know, back in the early 90's when I worked as a mechanic full time we'd actually pull the axle, disassemble the CV joint, and then decide whether to fix it based on whether the guts were chewed up or not. Of course, this required a customer to trust us to do the right thing, which I hear isn't all too common. (disclaimer, these were VW's)

So the spiel is:

1. quote replacement
2. ???
3. Profit!

ETA: OP, now that you have what you need, how about disclosing where you scored the 4runner parts so the rest of us vultures can get in on it?
