2013 4Runner

Lots of other people on this site share the same opinion about the 5th Gen's severe lack of power.

I've been here for over a year, active nearly every day, this is the first time I've seen anyone use the word "severe". I think almost every 5th gen owner will tell you that the 4.0L dual vvti v6 in the 5th's has plenty of power.

Here's the 5th gen engine specs:

4.0L v6 DOHC 24 valve Dual VVT-i - 270 hp @ 5600 rpm...278 lb-ft torque @ 4400 rpm

Here's the 4th gen engine specs for comparison:

4.0L v6 VVT-i - 236hp @ 5200rpm...266lb-ft torque @ 4000rpm
4.0L v6 Dual VVT-i - 254 hp @ 5000rpm...270 lb-ft torque @ 4000rpm
4.7L v8 VVT-i - 271 hp @ 4800rpm and 306 lb·ft @ 3400 rpm.
The 03-04 version of the v8's were 235hp and 320lb-ft

As you can see the 5th's are nearly equal to the 4.7l v8 in the 4th's.

I'm guessing you are only hearing these kind of comments in the 5th gen bash threads that seem to populate most of the other generations sections.

My wife has been driving a limited for a year and loves it. She loves the visibility that it offers. She did mention this weekend that it could use a bit more get up and go, but that is what superchargers are for.

I don't think you want to put a blower on this V6.

We are looking for a 4th gen with the V8 to replace our 4th gen V6 that has blown one of it's head gaskets at 165K. The repair is over $3000....

This is a common problem with the 4.0L 1GR FE V6 engine. This is the same engine as the 5th gens have.

I'm on the 5th gen section snooping around for high mileage 5th gens that may have this too. It may be that there are so few 5th gens with 150k or more miles that this issue is not surfacing.

Anyone out there with a +150K 5th gen?

Same engine as the 4th Gen V6?.......They are the same engine in name only. The heads were completely redesigned in 2010 as well many ,many other improvements.
TRD is doing testing on a supercharger for a 5th gen right now and will run it for year for testing before release next summer and the factory warranty will still be good.
Here is a pdf on the changes. https://docs.google.com/file/d/1VJYFQ1uBV0jbxILFOpOlbm94RAyk3_zjxFIC-UqBuHXZF3JM6fxIHLu18VuE/edit

We havn't heard of any head gasket problems yet on a 5th or newer FJ but the new design is only 3 years old and as stated the heads were redesigned.I follow these 2 forums pretty closely for mechanical problems.Trying to find a 5th Gen with 150k miles in 3 years won't be an easy task! That's 50k a year!We had one now close to 100k as the high mileage king.....and no problems.

What year is your 4th Gen as 2004's seems to be the most prevalent with HG problems but I personally wouldn't go as far as saying it's common since hundreds of thousands of them like yours are in 4runners,Tacos and FJ's. Now 3rd Gen V6's ,years 90-95, those HG's were a common problem.

Many other improvements? Enlighten us, please. Of course the heads are redesigned (we all know that they are now dual VVTi), but what are the other significant changes between the 4th and 5th gen V6 engines?

Can you read?Already provided the link once in my previous post.............

Do you even know what water jacket spacers are?

Water Jacket Spacers- improve temperature distribution of the cylinder block bore wall . In the case of a conventional cylinder block, coolant flow concentrates at the bottom and middle region of the water jacket. While temperature of the upper bore wall is high (due to high-temperature combustion gas) the temperature of the lower bore wall is low, since its only function is to support the piston. When the developed spacer is inserted into a water jacket, the coolant flow concentrates at the upper part of the jacket cooling the heads.

Whoa, easy there fella! I wasn't challenging you, I was just asking about the major differences. No need to get your panties in a knot!:flamethrwoer2:

"Enlighten us, please" is a smart ass comment after I already provided you with a link to the differences. :moon:

tip: a link is highlighted blue

This is another one that gets their kicks trolling around. He will go away in time just like all the other trolls did. JohnnyT is special. I actually read his posts now. This guy either has no brain or is doing stuff (like asking for differences after Harper just provided him with a link that describes all the differences) to provoke. They are a dime a dozen Philsey. How long until he responds to this post? 3.....2.....1.....

What a great link!! Thanks!

The head is much better in this version. I like that the cams have their own housing, that sure will save labor if the heads need to come off.

We were on the hunt for a 4th gen V8, but after seeing this doc, I think a 5th gen would be a consideration as well ('10 and later of course:))

Agree, JohnnyT is passionately disagreeable on 5th Gens. White Shadow is just passive aggressive - likes to slip in mild insults and then wonder why no one wants to be his friend.

BTW, how'd you like that picture of my Audi? Sexy, huh? Next time you want to talk about someone with an 8-year-old vehicle that's not going to replace it for another 8 years, let me know. LOL Scandalous!!!

I think you got points in the odd thread but flossing that Audi is useless, why on earth someone would buy such a slow coupe at such an incredible premium is actually beyond me. The sacrifice of having a coupe only makes sense to me if you got some heat under the hood. I am always astounded by the car noobs that roll around with a 2.0T trying to flex like they got something special, the fact that Audi will charge those prices for a car that can't even make 0-60 under 6 seconds is highway robbery.

I agreed with you when you said people here are a bit sensitive because they are just cars, but you're trolling and you need to calm down in a real way.

Bwah ha ha ha. Seriously? Really... seriously? If you think that overpriced chick-car VW brings any cred here, well ...... enjoy your lease payments.

Yeah yeah we know, you paid cash, right? Wink, wink.

I think you still live at home, go to CC, and that's Daddy's 4R and Mummy's Audi-Doody.

Ive been in the same boat for few months now and i looked at every suv on the market.

At the end of the day i came down to two choices; LR 4 and 4 Runner. LR 4 has been my choices from the get-go, but i have a dog and we like to be out doors, so i chose 4 Runner. Im not a fan of Toyota plastic interior, but my dog comes first in my life, so i decided not waste money on nicer interior in LR4.

So ill be buying Trail Edition next month.

If your wife wants an SUV to drive around town, then i would suggest Tahoe, that was my 3rd choice. But for my needs and reasons i mentioned, 4 Runner is my #1choice.
If she wants a mid size suv with nice interior and of good quality vehicle, then look at Cadillac SRX.

Make a list of top 3 things that you will be using suv for and 3 top things an suv must have or can do. Reliability, mpg , etc should not be on your list, they are a given factors.

Funny you say that...we also have a 2006 Tahoe, and I think she's leaning towards that, which may mean the 4Runner would be mine.
