For anyone looking to do this on the cheap...
One of my friends owns a body shop. He suggested trying the TYC tail lights instead of the Toyota ones.
Long story short, I had him order me the TYC ones with the intention that he would take them back if I didn't like them. The TYC ones showed up and had the harness, bulbs and gasket already installed and included.
I did a quick test of them by unplugging my current light and plugging this one in and it worked but more testing is needed to confirm that everything is working correctly (I did the quick test in the parking lot at work).
In a nutshell, this mod costs about $500 if you use Toyota parts (light, harness, bulbs). If you do it with the TYC lights (harness and bulbs included), they can be bought for $117 each off amazon ( Amazon.com: TYC 11-6658-00 Left Replacement Tail Lamp for Toyota 4Runner (Pack of 1): Automotive ) with free shipping making the total cost about half of doing this with the Toyota parts ($240 vs $500).
I'm going to install them tonight and can post pictures after if anyone is interested. I haven't been able to compare them side by side but they appear to be identical to OEM.
TYC Part #s:
Right: 11-6657-00 replacement for 81551-35400
Left: 11-6658-00 replacement for 81561-35390
Pictures are attached of the parts.
Alright, I ran home on my lunch hour to change out the tail lights. Worked great, everything is working as expected.
Here are some before and after pics with the TYC tail lights. (Please excuse the salt covered truck, it seems like its been snowing every other day.)
Thanks for posting the info on these TYC lights. I was looking at the OEM kits on ebay and saw these ones too and noticed they looked exactly like the OEM ones. If they work good and seem like good quality then I might pull the trigger on these ones.
If possible, could you get some night pics when you have time?
They seem to work perfect. The fit and quality seems to be as good as the OEM lights that I removed.
I'll get some night pictures taken tonight for you.

I got an email from them saying there is a recall on the tail lamps. Did you receive the email as well?
Can someone please explain the LED bulb portion of the 2014 lights? When you order the new tail light, does it come with the LED bulb? I know you can re-use the bulbs from the 2010-13, but do you re-use all 3 of the old bulbs, or only 2 of them and the new one has one LED bulb included or do you need to buy that somewhere else (and if so, where do you order this?).
There's an ebay listing that's suppose to include everything needed to install the 2014 LED tail lights on a 2010-2013 4runner:
Genuine Toyota 4Runner 2010 2013 LED Tail Light Kit w Harness Retainer | eBay
It looks like they have two extra parts listed:
52562-35040 RETAINER
52563-35040 RETAINER
Anyone know what they do and if they are needed?
