Ummm, if you order the TYC brand, you will not need any harness, I have an '11, bought them (see previous page in this thread) and installed with ZERO issues. It literally took me 9 minutes from start to finish to do this installation!

I don't see any differences at all between the TYC led lamps and OEM led lamps, they looked exactly the same when I parked next to a newer 4runner with led lamps (unless that person also had the TYC brand lamps in his too!).

So far they are still working perfectly, no issues, they are tight, and all is well with them.

My shipment from RockAuto begged to differ. The ONLY thing in the boxes were the lights themselves. They were also $112 each total, including shipping for CAPA certified, so really not bad at all. Since the harness was NOT included with my order, and it would appear RockAuto doesn't even stock the harness, I purchased it from Toyota Parts Express for $43 total including shipping, for a total combined price of $268.

I just received my TWC lights and fit and finish is pretty much stock. Everything fit perfect except the two metal pins that snap into retaining clips on the body. It maybe that the 2013 model uses different clips than 2014. The pins insert fine bit do not lock in as stock do. Once bolted down though it isn't noticible. I'm very happy at the moment with the TYC quality. It really looks great on the grey too

Looks awesome! Im running a 2012 T4R in the same color grey. I recently removed my step sides, never been happier with the look-consider it.

Sorry to hear, ninja, I can only assume it wasn't the TYC brand that you got from rock auto then. Maybe the CAPA certified units are from a different manufacturer, but the TYC ones I got from amazon allowed me to just plug the stock wiring harness into the light itself, no problems, no extra wiring or harnesses, perfect fit with the stock plug, all worked exactly as it should.

I would have bought it from rockauto too, but they did not have the TYC in stock when I bought mine, which is why I cross-ref'd the part numbers on amazon.com and bought them there. This is good info to post about too, so that others don't run into the same issue down the road! Perhaps you can post the rockauto part numbers that you got so people know those will require the extra harness. I believe I posted mine a page or two back.

Okay, slightly different part numbers here, these are mine and are direct links to the housings I purchased (including vendor):

Mine had the wiring harness already attached, bulbs were supplied and plugged in.

Perhaps the "-01" part number extension designates a version update that was CAPA certified, but as far as fitment, mine is perfect. Only time will tell if it holds up like an OEM part does.

So it seems like if it is CAPA certified then it doesn't come with the wire harness. This probably is also why they are cheaper than the lamps with the model number ending in 00.

I'm considering buying myself a pair for Christmas!

Wish there was a way to find out who toyota used as the vendor for the lights, as I would be willing to bet its TYC!

Like I said, I parked right next to another 4runner at Lowe's about a month or so ago and compared mine to his, they looked exactly the same, including the dimple on the side and even the seam marks inside the housing.

I'm happy with mine, for ~$250 for both, it was a nice, relatively cheap updgrade!

Lights showed up today! 9 whole minutes to swap them out! This has got to be the easiest mod I've ever done!!! Open hatch, pull light covers, unplug wires, remove 4 10mm nuts, pop lights out, reverse order with new led tails, DONE!!!


Mine were also hard to pop out, but I just used one of my squeegee cards to give me some leverage in popping them free. A putty knife would do just the same, if you wrapped it with a paper towel.

And for the other poster that said the lenses were super loose, mine seem to be very tight in there, but I noticed I had missed the plastic clip the first time I set the housing into the body, pulled it back, made sure it slid into the white plastic panel clip and screwed the 10mm nuts down tight. They don't move at all!

1.) what brand taillights did you use (TYC, OEM, off brand)?
2.) did you have to splice any wires to accommodate the bulbs from your 11' T4R?
3.) have you noticed any difference in the lights (braking, turn signals, reverse lights, etc)?
4.) are your new lights LED or Bulb?

I run a repair shop and I deal alot with Toyota. I decided to call the parts guy I always deal with and I spoke to him about the tail lamps. At first, when he looked it up he said that he would need a vin since all 3 levels of the 4R use different tail lamps. But then he looked further and found that all 3 supersede into one # for the L and one # for the R. The part #'s are as follows:

Right= 81551-35400
Left= 81561-35390

List price is $318.12 each and my price is $270.42 each.

Those are the part numbers for the OEM units. The numbers may have changed though since I posted up the info. Manufacturers update numbers all the time. Yes, these will fit you 2012 no problem and will plug right in as long as you get the little wiring harness (1 for each side) Even if you have zero mechanical ability, you should be able to do this in like 20 minutes. It's that easy. Let me know if you need the part numbers for the wiring harness.

Yeah, the brake lights are INCREDIBLY BRIGHT! Other than that, not really.

4.) are your new lights LED or Bulb?

Brake and parking are LED, they are mounted in the housing. The rest are standard bulbs and all was supplied in the housing, I did not have to swap anything over.

Im tracking this is the part number for the bracket, and that ill need to order two.

The part number for each wiring harness is 81555-35400 and you will need 2 total. You don't need anything else. You can transfer in your existing bulbs or buy new ones.

Can anyone post a video of them doing the install? I ordered the TYC lights and they will be here tomorrow! I bought a 2011 4runner two days ago and can't wait to tinker with it. Some people said that they did not have to use a harness and some did. Do you have to or not?

It's not a matter of "do you or do you not have to use it", it's a matter of "did your lights come with the harness or do you need to purchase it separately".

Video? Nah. It's a 2-hands kinda job. It's very straight forward, but prepare for bruised and scratched hands when you're trying to get those nuts loose from the bolts in the light housing access area. Give yourself bare minimum 1 hour for both total. It took me about 40 minutes just to get the damn nuts loose. No joke, they were torqued to maybe 80 lb*ft, which is hard as hell to overcome in such a confined space. Once you loosen those, the rest is very simple. No explanation needed.

For the foam gasket that is provided, pay attention to the orientation on the OEM units when you remove them. Be mindful of the most intelligent way to route the wires through the gasket BEFORE you remove the wax paper that's covering the adhesive side.

If in doubt, reread my post.

I admit, I'm late to the party but curious also. Mine is a 2011 LE and I'm beginning to like those LED tail-lights. Will I need to order the wiring harnesses also with the 2014 lights, or, have they moved up to the 2015/16 tail-lights? Are you still selling them?
