In my opinion, if you find a 2015 that is exactly what you want (SR6/Trail/LE/TRD Pro) in the color you want, with the options you want (KDSS, no KDSS, slider/no slider, third row, no third row), buy it. You might not see it again for a while. These aren't Camrys.

For example, on a trail premium the only interior color you can get is black. Seriously? What is this, 1909? “You can have any color you want as long as it’s black”.

They do, I believe it's called the GX460.

wish i had memory seats in mine. i hate having to adjust the seat after the girlfriend drives the 4runner.

My wife is 13 inches shorter than me. Trying to get all the seats and mirrors adjusted if she drives my truck is literally painful (if I don't notice and slam my knee into the steering wheel while getting in.)

Every company does this crap. The new Mazda MX-5 Grand-touring has a sweet tan leather interior, but if you want the sport model (the only one worth getting) it only comes with the black interior. It's pretty ridiculous.
I actually love the black interior on my Silver 4runner, but I could definitely see tan leather looking better other colors like red or blue.

Keeping with the thread's purpose, I say go for the 2016.
The dealer typically has better incentives for you to get the newest models, like 0% financing, tires for life, better rebates etc...
At the time, I got the 2015 because I know it's entirely possible that I might sell it in a few years. I want to retain as much resale value as possible, and the difference between a 2015 and 2016 is probably only a couple thousand dollars. Well worth it imo. The truck holds its value so well, if you have the money to spend it's kind of silly imo to not buy the newest model.

i opted for the 2015 because i found the exact color combination and options i wanted, and got it for what i think was a terrific price. if u want the new 2016 color (whatever that may be), or just want to say u have a 2016, then get the 2016.

I just saw the 2016 4Runner listed on the New Cars, Trucks, SUVs & Hybrids | Toyota Official Site website for the first time.
The main page with specs and features appears to be 100% identical to the 2015.
However, when you build a 2016 4Runner on the site, it looks like the whole accessories and package layout has changed.
There are new accessories available like DVD system. Plus there are things they now charge for that came free in my 2015 or at least were part of some included package.
A lot more options in the build section.
But I think they are more expensive now when you configure identical trucks from 2015 to 2016.

I think the Trail edition Premium is a pretty nice package. You get a great offroad truck with some nice comfort features.
I have the regular Trail, which is fine. I do wish it had heated seats, or at least before I moved to FL.

^^ That's why our son, bought a year end 2015 Lexus RX350, instead of the 2016 model.
- the 2015 was the last of the RX-3rd Gen
- he saved 13% off MSRP on the 2015, buying the same week the redesigned 2016 model rolled onto the show room floor
- plus the 2016 RX-4th Gen, was up another 7% MSRP

Maybe not a "true apples & apples" comparison / but example does show, how 1 year old new can sometimes be bought 20% cheaper overall.
- dealer discounts including buyer haggling on depreciation & rebate (tied to finance terms), was all in our purchased timing, which Dad had planned out with some optimism
- also helped we both didn't like the 2016 Lexus sculpture exterior sheet metal, approx. 8" longer wheel base design, & new bug eyed head/tail lights
