I would definitely wait. I think with Covid and chip issues they cut corners and just pushed the vehicles out there. I’d wait for 6th Gen.

Who knows if they’ll ever fix this backup camera quality or when I’ll get my second key fob

from what I read, the rear camera is decent quality but anyone is the MTM has crappy cameras in the side mirrors. The software matches the resolution of the side camera which make all cameras act as if they had bad resolution.

It is very disappointing that Toyota did not put a tiny bit more effort into it

Ok...2nd gripe besides the quality.

The new camera petrudes out now beyond the trim, (before it was tucked unde). Because the camera is now not covered from the top, the second it rains, this camera is useless cause of all the water spots.

Night time is also horrendous. I miss my 2019 camera setup.

What makes the night time so bad? Mine gets water spots in the rain, not sure if it pokes out though, I will have to take a look.

I've seen a lot of new 4Runners with this issue because I work at Toyota Dealership. The rear back-up camera quality is a hit or miss in the 4Runner. But these new 2023 4Runners are having lower quality spec cameras. In 2022 they we're pretty decent then with every quarter of the year they change up.

As mentioned before, you have to see if it has the MTM package. (multiple cameras)
The trucks without this package has better quality since software is only dealing with one camera.
The backup camera has been the same unit for years.

Can confirm that my '22 Limited with the extra 360deg camera view has worse fidelity than a '20? SR5 we rented. Also interesting to hear reports from Aurastyz. Wonder if he's just seeing MTM/360deg vs not or something else.

Something else I thought of…

At night the license plate reflection messes with the light metering of the camera. Beyond the bumper is just blackness. Those with white plates suffer most. Thinking of putting black vinyl across the bottom 1/3 of the camera lens to be able to truly adjust to the low ambient light at night. Keep a sliver of bumper in the shot for reference / judgment but enough to completely block the retro reflective plates.

Mine is a 2023 with white plates and the camera has no problem seeing beyond the bumper at night.

No need. If you don't have the MTM package, the image quality is better as mentioned many times in this thread.

I just picked up a 2023 Off Road Premium with the 360 cameras and the backup camera video quality is pretty bad. I thought there may be some protective plastic on the camera the dealer forgot to remove but that wasn’t the case.

I put an aftermarket camera on my Wrangler with the crappy factory head unit and that video quality is much better than what I have on the 4Runner.

very interesting, I just had a friend of mine (who is Toyota tech) tell me the 2023 cameras look better but we're still getting mixed reviews here.

He's worked on my 2022 many times and says my camera system is awful but the 2023 one he just worked on was much better he said.

I wonder if it's a hit and miss type of scenario for 2023 ? Some have decent cameras and some don't? I find that weird cause they all come from the same production line or are there multiple factories in Japan that build the 4runner?

I did ask him whether there is a bulletin on this and he said no. It's unfortunately that Toyota isn't doing anything about this to rectify the situation.

Yah, the camera pokes up, while the prior versions before MTM was tucked under the 4runner trim on the trunk (protecting it from water spots landing on it).

Where I live, it rains very often. The camera is useless for me when it rains with low light. I'm inclined to put a little "hat" on top of the camera at some point, just have to think about how I would go about in creating this mini awning over the rear camera if I keep this truck.

I'm hoping if by 2024 this fix this issue, I might just trade up my 2022 and also get wireless android auto to go with it.
