Help! 22re to 7mgte w/ a w56

So I'm sure these questions have been answered before but I want to confirm them. I have about 20 or so tabs pulled up on them each answering different parts but I kind of just want it in one place and applied directly to what I'm working with.

To work with a 7mgte and w56 trans what parts from what engines will I need

I'll put down what I know of and correct me if I'm wrong or neglect something.

Flywheel - from 7mge or 7mgte?
Clutch - from 7mge?
Pressure plate - from 7mge?
Bellhousing - from 7mge-w58
Clutch slave - Any supra?
Manual Ecu
Auto or Manual Harness?
5mge motor mounts
Radiator from v6 p/u

Anything else major I'm forgetting?

Any input would be appreciated.
Justin

Everything you need to know can be found on supracharged.com in the forums. Just search.

The short answer for you is that a 7M (turbo OR n/A) bolts to a W56 using a 7MGE (n/a) bellhousing.

No matter what engine you start from you have to use the wiring diagram from the supra and your truck, and splice the two together. If you are good at wiring and reading wiring diagrams its not hard. There's only about 5-6 wires you really HAVE to splice in order for it to run, the rest are sensors etc for the gauges in your stock dash and other things that aren't required just to run the engine.

Hope that helps

w58 bellhousing is easier if your going manual tranny
manual harness is a must if you do manual tranny
slave needs to match bellhousing
clutch prssure plate clutch and flywheel needs to be w58 or w56 depending on what you go with. you will also need to make custom engine mounts because no one sells them. you will also have to make a custom intake manifold because the steering rod will interfere with the 7mge manifold.

total cost of your 7mget investment will be well over 2500$ a 4.3 chevy will run under 1000$

But... which motor is cooler? I have never done a motor swap but I cannot imagine the swap costing $2500. You can find a motor for about $1,500 maybe less. Bell housings can be found for a couple hundred or less. You can build your own motor mounts for about $25 in steel (assuming you can cut and weld steel). The exhaust is about $50 in steel (again, assuming you can cut and weld steel). This is also assuming that the motor you buy comes with the wire harness and ECU.

My problem with all of the above is that if I did all of that I would want to tear the motor apart and rebuild it and pep it up a bit. Then that adds about another grand or two to the build cost :)

I think this swap can be done for about $2,000. If I thought about this before I would have put the 7mgte motor in my runner instead of dumping 3k into my 22re. I would have had a LOT more power. My little motor is fun but the turbo supra motor would have been a beast!

I'm getting the motor for 1200 w/ shipping. JDM import with 35k on the motor. Comes with intercooler/piping, 5 speed ecu, wiring harness, full intake, has been polished and powdercoated, has a metal headgasket w/ arp studs, not to mention he's letting me have the stand its mounted on currently.

I'm heading to the pick a part right now to see if I'm lucky enough for a bell housing, 5m motor mounts, and anything else I think I'll need.

So all in all I think I'm doing pretty good right now but I'm sure I'll run into unexpected costs somewhere.

The guy I'm buying the motor from put all the money into it but then decided to go with a 1jz for his supra. I decided that I'd rather keep the trans (w56) I have right now and not have to buy a 1000 dollar custom bellhousing. Plus its a well documented swap. I'll probably be calling on your expertise in about a week however. :)

i will admit the supra engine is a cool.
my swap
1994 chevy blazer 4x4 600$
advance adapters small block engine to toyota g52 transmission bellhousing 420$
aluminuim radiator 160$
my time to build engine mounts and rewire the harness
total money spent 1180$

SOLD blazer body 200$
SOLD blazer transmission 200$
SOLD blazer transfercase 100$
SOLD 22re with EFI and harness 500$

spent 180$ +my time on my swap.

you cant argue with the cost of the 4.3l swap double the horse power and torque of the 22re for around a 1000$

im not knocking the 7mgte but for anyone wanting to swap engines the 4.3l or 5.0l chevy is cheaper to swap and cheaper to buy parts for.

looking into some sort of swap... was thinking 3.4, 7mgte, or this 4.3 chevy.. what kind of gas mileage do you get?

i get 23mpg city on my 4.3 28mpg highway 35x12.50x15 tires 4.10 gears.
i polished my intake with a flexible head hone so i have no stubble in my cast intake.

you will actually use a land cruiser slave cylinder.
as for the engine mounts you WILL have to make your own there absolutely no engine mounts that mate the supra or 4.3 to the 4runner frame.
Its much easier and cheaper then trying to mate 2 different engines. with my 4.3 i had engine mounts that i made that stretch 5 inches to reach the chevy engine from the frame.
i know the 7mge has a slant stock mount so youll need to compensate to make the engine level if you use a stock mount. better off taking it off the block and making a plate mount for yourself.

and yes the V6 radiator will be fine, i got the aluminum because it was the same price as a v6 stock radiator.

Stumbled across this thread and wanted to throw in some info for anyone that is looking at doing a 7M swap and comes across this thread. Ive done 2 7MGE swaps and gonna do 3 and 4 here soon. If you shop right you can be in the swap for 1500. Thats what Im into mine including the whole car that I drove for 2 months before doing the swap, she wasn't pretty but it had a solid motor. If you originally had a 22RE there 100% bolt in other then the radiator.

To bolt a 7MGE into your 22RE W56 Toyota you will need:
-5M Motor Side Brackets out of the older CelicaSupra/Cressida. These will bolt further back on your 7M block and bolt directly up to your 22R Frame Mounts.

-You will need the bell housing/flywheel/clutch/fork/slave cyl off of the WSeries that came in the Supra. The bell housing will bolt right up to your W56. Your stock master cylinder will work.

-If you found a 7M with an auto harness no worries it will work, just gotta find 2 wires and connect them together. My buddy is rocking an auto harness and ECU with his W56 with no problems. Wiring them up isnt to bad if you have good diagrams at your disposal, dont use Chiltons there garbage.

-For fuel you just need to run a new feed and return line from the old 22RE lines on the frame to the other side of the motor.

-I used a conversion radiator meant for a 4.3L swap and pushed it forward to clear the crank pulley. The outlet port is on the driver side and input is on the passenger just like the stock 7M radiator.

Ive been driving mine for 2 years with no problems and still loving it. There was some times while I was doing the swap that tested my temper, but what engine swap doesn't.

That's all really cool info, thanks for posting.

Do you wheel your truck? I've heard from a couple different fellows that the 7M motor has oiling issues when run for long periods of time at low RPM, but I ran into another guy the other day who's been driving and wheeling his 7M swap for 120k on a rebuild with no trouble. What's your take on that?

Do you wheel your truck?

Not as much as I would like to lately. Just got my tranny rebuilt and installed dual t-cases and haven't got to play with them yet. I did see some forums where people were talking about some oil issues back when I was doing my swap. One being the location of the sump. If your oil was low enough and you were doing something to where the motor would be at an incline it could possibly starve the motor. I'm assuming if it was a concern you could modify the pan.

The other issue that was brought up was oil pressure. These motors have pretty low pressure at idle when warm. Factory spec is 4-7psi at idle and 37-71psi at 3000+ RPM's. Driftmotion sells an upgraded oil pump that ups the PSI if its something your worried about.

My oil pressure is within spec and i always check my oil level, so neither have been a concern yet.

i want to drop the same motor in my 93 and build it up how far can a i go with the stock trans how much power is too much

Im not sure how much our trannys can hold up to. The turbo variant (7MGTE) has mixed reviews behind our tranny's. Some people have had problems and others haven't. My buddy ran a W56 behind his Chevy 4.3L in his 90 which was slightly built and had a little more power then our 7MGE's for a few years with no issues. He eventually ended up hating the 4.3 and went to a Toyota 3.4L V6 which uses the 3.Slow Tranny. I guess it comes down to how hard you are when your out playing around.

in that case im definitelygoing to need a performance clutch i break everything i play in lol but im pretty sure i can push it to 425 or so on the stock transmision

I'm still working on my swap. I put it out of commission for a long time doing a sas, upgrading suspension, building bumpers and sliders, and other stuff. Right now I'm being stumped by a possible bhg. Was gonna go pull the head today but its snowing! I think I'll still go get a coolant check kit and try to confirm the bhg before I pull it apart.

That's an interesting intercooler install. You need to bring this beasty out on a run with us, I really want to see what that turbo does for you on the trail.

Just wondering if any of you guys doing swaps are working AC in your runner post swap? It matters in the deep south for a daily driver.
