255/80/17 ST Maxx users

I have looked on here and on google for some answers (but nothing concrete as for an answer), I want to run Cooper st maxx 255/80/17 size tires (going to order real soon), I have a 2.5/1.5 daystar spacer lift, will I have serious rub or should I drop back to 255/75/17 st maxx.

My 4runner is a 2011 SR5, no mud flaps up front, and came from factory with 265/70/17 stock.

I will be running stock rims also.

I would like to possibly hear from people that have seen or run this set up.

I know that coopers specs on that tire arent what a true 255/80/17 is suppose to be also, they have it listed as a 32.8 tall tire.

Cooper ST Maxx 255/80/17

My stock general grabber HTS are 265/70/17 which are 31.6 tall and 10.7 wide and fit with approx. 1" at full lock on front from the inner wheel panel (if that makes any sense)

Any help before I order these would be great! Just want to be safe

I dont know if this helps you, however Im running 255/80/17 BFG MT KM2 with a 3" ToyTech. I did have some rubbing issues with the mudflaps. First I used a heat gun to reshape them, then ended up removing them completely. The front fenderliners i just bent forward. No rubbing issues anymore.
I am at 3" lift up front.

I know you would be completely safe with the 255/75/17s but maybe you could convince a tire dealer to order and mount one 255/80 for you to try out.
 
That tire is rated at 33.3 tall and 10" wide, a little taller than the Cooper I am almost sure I would have some rubbing or pretty bad rubbing with that.

I really appreciate the help though, I am trying to figure it out but I will probably go with the 255/75/17 to be safe and not do allot of modifying or cutting for them to work.

But for some reason I really want the taller tire, little more clearence and I think looks better (I know dumb right lol)

I talked to one of the guys over at discount tire direct "Bruce" he said with factory 17" rims and the 2.5/1.5 daystar lift which I am using both, the 255/80/17 will work will minimal rubbing to no rubbing?, he said the 255/75/17 is almost same height I have now with the general grabber HTS in 265/70/17, and the 255/80/17 will be narrower ? He said the Coopers in 255/80 aren't a 33" tire.

Do you guys trust them over at discount tire for that info?
 
Don't be afraid of the tiny amount of heating and cutting needed.
I'll take a picture of how much work was needed. It's not even noticeable... I'm talking less than 1/8" of cutting on the lowest corner inside the wheel well.

If it required anything noticeable, I would have gone more conservative myself.
 
i'm running these coopers with a 3" toytec lift and 3/4" spacers. The only time I have rubbing issues is turning right and on the brakes so there's a little bit of a dive. Probably would be fixed with moving the liner forward and some minor mods to the mud flaps.
 
Thank you for the info, I am leaning toward them more and more, probably gonna pull the trigger on them soon.

I don't do any serious rock crawling or going over rocks allot, mostly driving back old fire trails to our deer camp, but its gets pretty nasty in certain spots, especially when it rains or snows.

For what it's worth, I ran P-metric 285/70R17 Toyo A/T's without a lift on stock wheels and had minimal rubbing at the front liner - did the front fender liner mod and the rubbing was gone. I think 2.5" of lift in the front will be ample to clear the 255/80R17 ST Maxx. The key is keeping the stock wheels. Most people that have trouble with rubbing even after 2.5-3 inches of lift have wheels with more aggressive offset. The stock wheels put the tires just inside the wheelwell enough to avoid any rubbing on the body mount or fender liner.

Your other option might be to find a local store that carries the desired tire, and get them to price match treaddepot.com. Then, you can get them to do a test fit with the 255/80, with the caveat that if for whatever reason they rub, then they'll get you the 255/75's. Win/win and you avoid the uncertainty.

My sense is that you won't have any issues (again, the key is stock wheels), but if you do, you have a plan B that won't cost you any extra.

Waiting on my check from Ford/ Lincoln extended warranty that I purchased with old truck that I traded in on my 4runner, really have learned allot on this site!

Once tires are complete, gonna look into some LED lights, skid plates for front and weather tech floor mats, lol, its like a drug with modifying vehicles, the aftermarket for the 4runner is awesome!

Very happy with this vehicle so far!

Did you pull the trigger on these? I'm leaning this way after I get my OME lift installed in a couple of weeks. Did you notice any rubbing? thanks

FWIW, I have an Icon stg2 (3" and Icon UCA) and have no rubbing. I've only wheeled once, but have tried to flex in different angles to check for rubbing--so far, so good.
 
Just to follow up, I just installed 255/75/17s on the stock rims...I love them so far, but I don't have a lift. I really suggest going with at least the 80s since you do have a lift. Might take some light trimming, but I think it would fill the wells better. Good luck! I haven't got to run them hard yet, but I didn't notice any more road noise compared to stock. They will get a test real soon when I get up to NC though. I'll also put them through their paces on these Florida beaches...can't be any worse than those Dunlops!
 
I have a 2015 with KDSS and installed the 255/80's about two weeks ago with no lift, and really didn't have any rubbing issues-surprisingly. Granted it was all street driving no off-roading. I have since installed a toytec ultimate lift up front set at 2 inches and haven't experienced any rubbing yet.

I have yet to really flex the suspension to try and get it to rub.

It is worth noting that you will notice a stiffened ride quality with the E rated LT tires versus the stock P rated tires if you aren't upgrading shocks.

After I installed the ST Maxx's I upgraded the suspension (Bilstein 5100's all around) and it made a big difference. Handled the heavier tires much better.

So, no rubbing on the front mudflaps? I've just got my OME 3" installed and getting slight rubbing on the mudflaps; not sure to trim or try a heat gun to soften up the plastic that would let me push them back just a bit. Thanks
 
I've read where 255/80/17 ST Maxx's fit with 5100's @2.5" of lift.. Has anyone fit them without rubbing with only 1.75" of lift and 1" in the rear. I really want to go this route but concerns with fit. Also anyone used 275/70/17"s? This is my alternative to avoid rubbing... Thanks

I don't know about the 255/80 but the 275's should work at stock height if you still are running the OEM wheels.

May have to go that route. My other concern is I was looking at the Fuel Vector Wheels 16x8.5 with -6 offset, wanted a slightly wider look to fill the wheel wells. My 1.75" lift is enough to be noticeable but might not be enough to keep the tires from rubbing under load with the -6 offset.

They also have them with +7 offset which is closer to the stock Trail wheels. That should keep the tires inside the wheel wells.

I have 255/80s on my 2014 trail W KDSS. I installed them 100% stock and I did have to convince discount to just install and not worry about fit. I removed my front mudflaps and moved the front inner fender liner forward. I now have TRD bilstein on all 4 corners. Wheel regularly and no rubbing at all front or rear.
