265/70r17 vs 285/70r17?

I am going back and forth on either 265/70r17 or 285/70r17. I currently have the stock 265/65r17 Brigestones. I am putting some FJ springs and shocks and a Daystar 2.5/1.5 kit on next week and I know I want a taller tire but not sure if I need a wider one. Snow is not a problem down here in Texas, so pavement, dirt, and mud are about all I'll have to deal with. I am interested in your opinions and the factors that go into your decision as this will be the first time I pick a tire for reasons other then $$. How much of a difference can you really tell with just an inch or so variation in width? Also do I have to use wheel spacers with the 285s?

I went with 265/65/18 on a 9 inch wheel. They look great but I didn't go wider because I did not want the extra fuel mileage hit.

I only have 5100s set a 1.75 in front and stock rear.

Here are some calculations that may help in your decision.
Your stock tires are 265/65r17. They are 30.6" tall.
The 265/70r17 tires are 31.6" tall.
The 285/70r17 tires are 32.7" tall.
If you wanted to go 32.6 inches but didn't want to to go wider, use a 265/75/r17.

I only run 31.1" tires with no lift but from what I have read on this forum, the 285's will fit on your proposed setup with some trimming. Others that run 285's needed the spacers because the wider tire contacted the upper control arm. Spacers fix this by moving the tire away but this creates interference with other items that you need to trim off.

One more thing to keep in mind. When the speedometer reads 60, you are traveling 62.0 with the 265/70r17. You are traveling 64.2 with the 285/70r17.

I hope this helps.

Just an FYI I currently run FJ springs and shocks, purchased the Daystar Kit, but soon realized that the DayStar Kit would not fit (Following their instructions and No compressor method) to put the front struts back in. Since they sit taller there is less clearance. I read that some people actually loosened the lower control arm bolts, but I decided it wasnt worth all the trouble just for spacers and decided to just hold off til I go Bilsteins :)

I wasn't aware this tire even existed. I should know, I searched high and low to no avail last year when I bought my tires.:keyboard::nerd:

I did the same thing and this tire doesn't exist. There are several options for that size if you have 18" wheels (265/70R18=32.6") but no 265/75R17. I myself went with 275s because I didn't want to buy 18s and no one makes 265/75R17 (or 265/80R16 for that matter)

Wouldn't 275/70/17 work also , not quite as much as 285s ?

This is a good point, and opens another can of worms. I am also stuck between GY Silent Armors and GY Duratracs. The SA have many more size options including 275/70/17 but the Duratracs limit me to either 265/70/17 or 285/70/17. With these being the two tires that I am pretty much set on it becomes a decision between the 265/70 Duratrac with a more aggressive off-road tread or 275/70 SA that are about a 1/2 in taller and a little less then a 1/2 in wider. The 285s are out of the running at this point, I'm not experienced enough nor do I have the budget to start trimming or replacing bumpers and all that. I do drive mostly on paved roads between 35mph and 65mph but when it does rain down here the mud is pretty nasty, and I like to hit the tank trails around Fort Hood on my way to fishing spots, so I am leaning more towards the Duratracs. I am still open to suggestions and advice as this is a very big investment that I can only afford to do right the first time.

I wasn't tracking this. The guy I bought these off of showed me his 2003 with the exact same set up. He said that with the 2012 FJ shocks you have to grind down the bushing just a hair to get them to fit in the 4th gen 4runners, but other then that everything fit fine. Is there a difference with the 2003 Sport edition V8 he had and my 2008 SR5 V6 as far as the installation and clearance? I also picked up a dif drop with the whole package as well, will this make any difference in the as far as the clearance for the spacers is concerned? How much will just the FJ shocks and springs raise me without the spacers? I have heard that it does level you out more.

Tire comparisons with silent armor and duratrac. The Hot Sheet: 33 Off-Road Tires Tested - Jp Magazine

I appreciate the link, now I know that both tires are good, so I'm not worried about making a bad choice with either of those. I guess now it will come down to which ones are available next week. I get one week of leave for spring break and as soon as the garage is cleaned up I'm going to knock this out. I would like to thank everyone that has responded thus far. This is an excellent forum that helped me choose a 4Runner over the other vehicles I was looking at, and now helping to guide me along the path of making my 4Runner exactly what I want. I don't care if its unique or just like 1000 others as long as its what I want (and what I can afford). I will take plenty of pics before, during, and after the whole transition process so as to contribute to the wealth of visual knowledge this site has. :guitar3:

Ok, so I went with the 285/70R17 Duratracs. I will post pictures and tell my fun experience with the FJ swap daystar and spidertrax install on another post that I will title, "FJ swap, sway bar removal and Daystar/Spidertrax Install". Long story short for this thread, it wasnt easy but very well worth it. I absolutely love it. I was worried that it might not work right or feel right driving or even not look right but I am extremely pleased. I would suggest the same setup for anyone that wants a good looking street friendly off road capable beast. Thanks again to all yall that helped me come to this point, I appreciate the experience and resources that is on tap on this site.

Post some pictures of the lift! I have the DS right now with FJ coils waiting to be installed. I'd love to see how much lift you got out of it...any idea? You don't have XREAS correct?

I hope you are happier with your tires than Nachies was on page 5 of this link. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/108431-help-me-out-265s-285s-any-regrets-asap-5.html
