265 up to 285's

Ok I got my lift and some of you got me thinking about stepping up to 285 70 17 .

How much power does it rob away from the vehicle compared to running 265s ??

I would probably be running Nitto TG or Firestone Dest AT's . I will check on tire weights , but just wondering in general your thoughts on power and trans searching for the right gear.

Does anyone know what axle ratio's we have ?? in a v6 TE. they may differ from LTD or an SR5 , but doubt it. ( although they should have lower ratio's in the TE )

I believe all the gear ratios are the same in all models, what it is though, not sure.

I didn't really get any power rob by adding the tires. I drive slow anyways. But going up to Tahoe with 4 big guys and snowboarding gear was no problem. Yes I do want more hp but who doesn't, I am a guy. Wonder how that URD supercharger is coming along.
:lmao:

It is like going from the 265/65/17 to the 265/70/17 on your old 4th gen a slight power loss but lets be honest its a lifted 4runner not a race car

If you live where it is flat ground it will not be as noticable as in mountainous terrain. On hills 285s will cause a lot of gear hunting and lugging the engine. 285 feel more sluggish all the time and will cost you approx 2 mpg. My freind put 285s on his 09 4.0 Tacomma here in mountain terrain in Arizona and has regretted it so far. He wishes he would have only went to 275s.

Actually it doesn't hunt for gears and for lugging the engine the 5th gen 4runners have the new 4.0 which has far more power. But you are pretty close on the mpg loss.

Well i thought it was a race car !! Damn I bought the wrong vehicle lol :)

I would have not noticed any difference before in the 4th gen because I had a nice torquey V8 !!!!!!!! I never even noticed a drop in milage .

I put 285/65/18 E load Trail Grapplers on my 4runner. I'm lucky to get 13.5-14 mpg at 70 mph on the Hwy (through up and down hilly terrain). With the ski racks on I was getting 11.5 mpg. Around town with slow accleration... maybe 14.5-15mpg.

The 4runner has a noticeable power drop since adding the larger tires and lift. I might have to swap the Trail Grapplers for some Terra Grapplers if gas prices keep goin up.

Edit: Around town the power seems perfectly fine, I really notice it on the highway when it constantly has to down shift to keep me at the cruise control speed.

anyone with 285/75r17 tires on a t4r? I know the more popular size is
285/70r17 but the 75 is a little taller and a little less wide.

Crap !! this is what im afraid of . i drive a lot of miles and this would l
kill me . Especially if we reach $5 per gal. Damn trying to find the right set up is becoming impossible. Plus I take long trips with it . Thats why I don't want bigger tires better yes , not bigger although the cool looking factor is hard to pass up.

I may have to buy UCA's , take truck in to have VSC re-calibrated , cost of 5 285's (if I do that) OYE !!!!

I noticed a drop in torque/power with the 285 70 17s and lost about a mile per gallon in gas mileage on the highway. But my teenage boys dont call it a "mom car" anymore! :gun5:

I'm running the Destination ATs in 285/70/17 with a toytec ultimate lift, I avg like 15 hwy. I've never seen the 20s, even stock lol. I'll be switching up to some 285 Duratracs tomorrow, so we'll see what the mpg will be like.

I don't think anybody has had to get their VSC re-calibrated and myself and hawkdog21 didn't need UCA's to get our alignment correct with just springs.

hamiltonj2w1 is correct, neither of us needed UCAs to be aligned running OME springs... they are nice to have not need to have...

ok thats good . I have a buddy who owns a frame and axle shop and can dial it in for me .

I've gotta look at some 285's then . I want to try nittos maybe TG's , I've been real happy with my FS Dest AT's , they are a great tire. Nobody carries Nitto's here though. :(

Is there a big difference in looks from 265 to 285? worth the mile loss?

I haven't decided on getting 265/70/17 or 275, or 285... but I've been thinking about 285/70/17 Firestone Dest AT that is 117c speed rated and not the E load range. The weight of these are 44lb per tire which is 5lbs more than the stock tires.

here is mine, lifted with 265's then 285's
